  • Price match at DM's - that is if they don't hide all the stock…

    • So true, but I did get my Corona's price match last week at DM's in Prahran.

    • But will DM in Sydney price match VIC store price?

      • Not a chance, sorry :(

        • u guys are lucky.
Hope banana's were cheaper there and Beer here :)
BTW, they deliver australia wide for $7.50 per carton. Can be a good price even after paying delivery. But I will wait for a deal here in NSW.
My + for great price for corona.

        • "BTW, they deliver australia wide for $7.50 per carton. Can be a good price even after paying delivery."

          Nope,

          Walk in only

        • Hope I am not missing anything. At the bottom of the pdf file, if does say delivery.
Edit: Yes my bad. Walk in only for beer.

They do deliveries, but the $29.99 special price is for Walk in only

Good price for Sapporo - a great beer.

    • I'll be there tomorrow at opening for it!

      • i bet all the stock at DM's mysteriously disappears tomorrow and reappears on Friday…

    • Is it better than corona?

    • Though it's brewed in Canada…

      • New stock is brewed in South Australia by Coopers :)

Damn you Victorians, just another reason for me not to like you.

Hey, at least you still have the Opera House… :P

      • I sometimes like ur reflexes.

Personally I'd hold off till Friday to get the only -true- imported beer = Corona. I checked with Dan Murphy's and 1st Choice: All Becks are locally brewed (and have received terrible reviews), and the Sapporo's are brewed in Canada. The choice is yours!

    • I also love Corona and Heineken.

    • Sorry, I should note that GetWinesDirect actually state 'Becks Pilsner Imported Beer' so one could assume they stock the real deal.

    • "All Becks are locally brewed"

Dan and 1st choice might only have the locally brewed ones, but GetWinesDirect import theirs…

      • Yeah but even so you've got to read where it's brewed on the box. I've had imported beers before but they aren't from the actual country they orginate from. Just depends on how picky you are.

One way to check if the beer you are buying is imported is to check the barcode prefix. Something locally brewed under license will have a prefix 93.

Corona I bought last week from Dan's has prefix 75 - Mexico.

Sometimes at Dan's you'll find Stella, Peroni and Heineken may be imported or locally brewed. Definitely worth checking - locally brewed is always worse.

      • "locally brewed is always worse."

why is it always worse ???

        • I don't have the answer to that - it's only my opinion. The key different ingredient in the beer when locally brewed is the water. Water tastes different around the world, so I assume when all other ingredients are the same, the beer flavour is altered slightly by the different water.

Foster's or Lion mostly brew these beer's under license in Australia.

"The key different ingredient in the beer when locally brewed is the water."

we have some of the best and cleanest water sources here though… (OK, maybe not Adelaide and Sydney), but Melb and Tassie have some of the best drinking water in the world…

        • jv - I didn't say our water is worse, I said different.

Using extreme's: if our water is sweet, and europe's water is salty, but otherwise you put in exactly the same ingredients, then the result will be different. I would expect that the flavour of the beer is optimal where the beer recipe was initially developed. Changing a key ingredient will slightly alter the taste (though it could enhance it).

        • "Changing a key ingredient will slightly alter the taste (though it could enhance it)."

so not necessarily "always worse" then ???

        • In my experience with Stella, Peroni and Heineken, the locally brewed version is always worse than the imported version. Of course if you're drinking Heineken in Amsterdam, then I'd suggest the locally brewed is as good as it gets. That is my opinion, as noted in my second comment.

Theoretically it is possible that the chemical reaction that occurs during the brewing process with alternate water to that found at the original recipe source that is more pleasing to your palate. Should this be the case, then I encourage you to drink whichever you prefer.

        • Yep - as braddsey said, it's all about the water that is used in the local region. I remember going to Pilsen in the Czech Republic and learning about how the soft water available locally was vital in making Pilsner taste the way it did. I wouldn't buy a locally rebrewed beer if I had the choice.

      • People usually say imported is better, but have almost never done real double blind taste tests between the local and imported versions. Many people claim the Heineken tasted better in Amsterdam than here, while ignoring the important psychological factor that they were on a natural high on holidays thus it being quite likely their opinion is biased.

There are two things at play in the 'imported is better' factor: We have a natural bias in Australia to assume imported products are better. There is a common belief that locally sourced (in any country) is secondary quality while the best product is exported (in this case, to us).

The other important factor is why buy a "foreign" beer if it's not made in its country of origin? There is essentially one overriding reason to make Asahi in Thailand, Kirin in Australia, and Heineken in Australia: it's cheaper than importing the original product. Customers feel a bit ripped off by having a 'foreign' beer made with 100% Australian ingredients, even if the recipe is original.

        • You're right on most counts that people feel ripped off. You'll find that beers brewed under licence used imported ingredients though. It's the unique flavour of a particular hops / yeast / other ingredient that gives it a particular flavour.

      • Yeah i agree when you can get your hands on Heineken from Amsterdam and then compair it to the Aussie version you'll notice a huge difference. Amsterdam version is SOO much better. Thankfully the BWS here has switched from the Aussie version to the stuff brewed in Amsterdam plus it's cheaper..Win win!
