FX Audio DAC-X6 HiFi Optical/Coaxial/USB Digital Audio AMP DAC $95 Delivered @ Audiophile Store

110

Good price for a budget/entry level DAC AMP combo - reviews say good things about it (for its price).
About same price as what you would pay on Aliexpress stacked with cashrewards BUT this store is located in Melbourne so you won't wait 6 weeks and plus you get a local warranty.

Headphone jack at the front is 6.35mm so make sure you pick up an adapter if you're using 3.5mm.

Wouldn't drive any headphones in excess of 300ohms. For those that like to tinker, there are some reddit posts that talk about mods that claim to improve SQ - op amp rolling, gain jumpers. etc.

I would describe myself as audiophile curious as of the past week. Comment your thoughts if you do own one of these, I only put in my order last night.

  • Recently jumped into the audiophile world when I purchased the Focal Elears. Would this be a a good entry point into AMPs and DACs? or would it better to save up for a better one?

I'd suggest that you get something more decent between $150 and $200 to release the full potential of the Focal Elears. Lots of choices if you google. Fiio is a good brand.

Dude, jump out before you go broke!
Everything sounds good except Sennheiser and Shure… and even budget Chinese BT buds can sound satisfying.

But if you must… go separate.
I find DACs are generally quite similar sounding.
Amps they have more character… my preference is Class A and Tubes.
OpAmp swapping make miles more difference than tube rolling.
Don't even waste your money on cables… I've still got spare silver solder from that road trip.

      My current wish list:
Amp: WHAMMY DIY… Love the Pass sound signature, but can't find any Chinese clones or the kit with enclosure.
      DAC: Topping D90.

If you want an all in one I would recommend the Topping DX7 Pro, you should be able to get it for ~$750.

      And stay away from Head-Fi!

      • LOL! I can totally relate to this. Few years ago, I went into an audio shop in hopes of finding a good pair of IEM for personal enjoyment. Little do I know that it would set me on a spending journey into a bloody rabbit hole.

@kendoggs I just recently bought into the Topping E30 and L30 stack. I think this is a good starting and ending kit for anyone wishing to have a taste of 'high end audio'. You can get the kit from here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/576857. Then buy some cheap 2RCA to 2RCA patch cable (as short as you can find).

  • I have one of these, owned it for a good 4 years now and it's still going strong. I keep it hooked up to my Xbox to get sound out to my headphones these days. IMO its biggest appeal is just the option of inputs for the price, whether you want to use the built in amp or hook it up to something else. Sound quality is fine. I can't detect any noise in the signal.

Dilvpoetry brand but pretty much the same thing $87 on amazon https://www.amazon.com.au/Dilvpoetry-Headphone-Amplifier-Dec…

Same chips, same layout, slightly different front panel and different case. Looking at images of the boards, they're fairly similar.

I think one is a clone of the other (Or they're both clones of something else), but they're not straight identical re-badges.
Just from looking at the boards, the FX Audio one looks a little better (Large dual pole switches rather than buttons, higher quality PCBs)

    • Similar, but seems to have a bit more cost cutting in QC and some components.
You could get something that works the same or be unlucky and get something that isn't as good or does not last as long.
No that FX Audio is the benchmark of quality, all built to a cost.

  • I just got one of these delivered for $90 from the same store. There was a pop up if you joined their email list you get a discount code for $5 off. Try "6B6DVWPSB8S9" as a discount code and see if it works for you!

  • Any of you have experience using this with the hd6xx?

    • 38mW-300Ω probably not enough power to drive you HD6xx….

    • there have been reports of people running 6XX fine on this - your mileage may vary

  • Audio nerds, what's the easiest way to convert CDs into high quality rips (?) on a harddrive and how can that be connected to a regular hifi setup? TIA!!!!

      Exact Audio Copy

      http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ it's free.

Keep them WAV files or maybe use FLAC.

Sometimes before when I downloaded music, the had the EAC logs attached, so the must be good.

I just use Spotify or something else like that, it's just more convenient. Try TIDAL, they promote high quality streaming
Try the the trial for a few bucks for 90 days.

      • Thanks. How do I get these files from the HD to the amp? Sorry for being so clueless!

        • “Digital input: PC USB / Coaxial / Optical”

It all depends on what connection options you have on your PC. I use an optical connection for my Topping amp & speakers.

            @NatDan: Thanks

    • This could be discussed for days.
Plenty of software to store songs from CD's, need to choose the quality that works for you.
How you play it back depends more on how you want to interact with your system than anything else IMO, digital into your system allows lossless, then upto your DAC / Amp to do its magic. Nothing wrong with streaming from a phone (not bluetooth).

I gave up and use Spotify, quality is decent (I'm sure there is better, but my headphones will make more difference than the stream bit-rate after basic speeds) and its easier to find new music or be reminded of bands I have not listed to in the last decade.

      • Yeah I just use the free Spotify on PC and there is no skip limit but just ads. But Ad's is not that frequent.
Youtube ads now is really frequent now and annoying.
When I was trialling Tidal, the quality was good but sometimes was doing weird things.
I never had a large CD collection, Spotify is just convenient.

      • Same question. How can I stream from my phone? What hardware do I need to link the two together.

I'd like to achieve CD quality sound.

        • You are aiming a bit low, CD quality. It's past that. Try some High resolution audio, it may enlighten you, I could hear the difference.

eg. "Tidal Masters songs are streamed at 96 kHz/24 bit", I stopped using Tidal but give it a try, it is a easy source or High resolution audio.

From a older Samung phone with micro USB and a OTG USB cable, you can plug in a USB DAC. Many new DACs have bluetooth.

A word of warning, its going to get expensive.

  • at the risk of sounding like jv, what's the normal price?

    • Your sanity. I'll keep my tin ears and enjoy budget audio.
