We (Timbecon) have gotten a good deal on Milescraft products and decided to run a special on MyDeal. These prices are below our usual cost price but because we did a big buy up we got a one off special.

Since Covid A LOT of people seem to have gotten into woodworking. Pocket hole jigs are a great way to get started with joinery. Also with so many people using machines for the first time, spend a few bucks on some safety equipment. Fingers don't grow back.

This is my first posted deal, so please let me know if I did anything wrong. Be nice please.

  • Spelling problem in title? Safety.

    • Corrected. Thank you.

Pocket holes and Wood Workers hey 👀

    • +2

      Pocket holes are fine.
Not the strongest or most refined way of joining things, but if used correctly, perfectly fine.

      • +2

Good for joining pieces together to make a tabletop etc.

      • +1

With glue they're stronger than dowels.

Too subtle? Guess no one reads Urban Dictionary

  • good price, I ordered the pocket hole jig a few days ago from Amazon for $67 but this would come a lot quicker since it's AU stock

Thanks, added to my kit :) Fix up my dodgy joinery…

Little depressing that the shipping doesn't combine for the jig and the Trigrips :(

    • +1

They should. If you add both to your cart, it should combine the shipping at checkout.

      • +1

I mean, it did combine. The $13.87 and $13.95 into $27.82. Was just hoping the shipping may have dropped a bit at least. Can't win them all!

        • +1

That is very odd. It should have given a combined cheaper rate. I will raise this with myDeal as it is their rate system that should be working it out.

    • +1

You could try ordering direct from Timbecon. Standard shipping showed $9 for me for both items to Queensland.

  • +1

For the layman, what kind of joins do I make with these?

    • It is a type of joinery where it helps you drill a hole at an angle that will screw two pieces of timber together. It is used a lot with furniture making. It is one of the easiest joins to learn for beginners.

    • +1

There's a few examples of things you could do here:

(but for some reason the pictures are tiny)

  • +1

Can we order direct from your site and pick up from Canning Vale?

Edit: just checked, yes you can.

    • For some of the deals. The tri grips are mydeal only.

      • +1

I ordered the pocket hole set. Probably best that I pick them up from the shop whilst wearing a blindfold. Too much good stuff there!

        • +5

Nah don't wear a blindfold. You'll trip and fall into a new tablesaw purchase. lol

    • This shop is in Canning Vale :o

      • Quick, lose your wallet! It's dangerous having these places close by!

      • Yes the original store is in Canningvale. The HQ is now in Melbourne but we still have the store open there.

  • Gotten? American?

    • +1

No, Australian. I have always said gotten.

  • How is this compared to the Kreg system? (sorry bit of a newbie question)

Also I'm also tossing up whether to spend the extra money on a Kreg K4 compared to something like this?

    • Honestly it is probably on par with the Kreg if not ever so slightly lower then the Kreg. I personally use a milescraft jig and find it perfectly fine for my needs. I would say that Kreg K4 has it's place with repeatable drilling of smaller boards. Like if you make drawers but if you are like me and use it on bigger jobs, you'll have the kreg out of the mount 99% of the time and in that case they are much the same. The only one I would now spend the extra money on would be the armor tool one, which it much more expensive but is the best.

At the end of the day pocket hole jigs are one and the same as they were years ago, until you move up something fancy like armor tools one.

      • Aah. I want it to make draws. Trying to add under couch storage to existing furniture. Any recommendations then? I have no specialist stuff (only bench drill, dremel saw max, variety of standard clamps, standard hand tools)

        • +2

Without going too crazy on tools. You can get away making drawers with a tablesaw or mitresaw + circular saw. You will need to be able to cut MDF or ply sheets for the bottoms of the drawers and accurately cut the walls. You can do both with a table saw but they can be a bit pricey. You can do both cuts as well with a mitre saw for the walls and use a circular saw with a straight edge to cut the bottoms. Of coarse you could also use a handsaw in place of the mitre saw if you have the patience.
I would then invest in some long clamps. Pipe clamps are the cheapest and will get the job done. But you may want to go sash or parallel clamps. From there you will just need consumables. Glue, timber, screws etc.
After you build a few you might find things you want to "upgrade" too depending on your situation. Youtube videos are your best friend for these kind of projects.

  • @curtturtle any chance of you guys carrying Lost Art Press books?

You're the only specialist Australian woodworking store that seems to have reasonable prices. If I can't source something from yourselves I'll often order from the UK because the prices at Carbatec and Lie-Nielsen Australia have 50-100% added to the price (the last time I price checked a LAP book it was priced over 60% higher here).

    • We don't but I think there has been some discussion on carrying books in future. I will add them to our next discussion on what new SKUs we should carry. We are starting to really focus on education and community building and I think some of those books might be a great match.

      • I think there's a real opportunity to go after the LAP-types like myself who are into the traditional woodworking. We've been getting gouged by the other guys for too long

        • Sadly that seems to be the case across the whole hobby/profession. We are trying to fill as many gaps as possible that others over charge for. Like Japanese tools, traditional hand tools and stuff. I handle all the new product uploads for the website and marketplaces and we must put up like 100+ new skus a month.

  • Does the kit come with any screws? (If so, how many?) Also, does it come with the storage case like the one @impoze linked?

    • +1

I believe it is the same kit. Kit 7336.

      • So 60 assorted screws and the case. Thanks!

        • +1

Sounds about right. I am working from home today. I will have to look tomorrow when I go in.

  • With shipping it comes out a few dollars cheaper at Amazon if you have Prime: https://www.amazon.com.au/Milescraft-PocketJig200XCJ-Pocket-…

    • And faster delivery. That amazon kit is through Amazon US.

    • +3

Or spend just a handful of dollars more to support Australian business

      • +1

yep, I would have bought from Timbecon if I hadn't already earlier, get it from local stock and Aussie business

  • Not sure why deal is marked as expired. Still available from Mydeal but ordered direct from Timbecon with cheaper shipping.

    • Sorry we extended it for another week and I forgot to update the post.

      • No need to apologise…just trying to get you more orders :)

        • Yeah. I totally appreciate the heads up.
