I meant mobile data for yourself. wifi is no doubt unlimited for a family under most circumstances

      • Family here - we stream a fair bit but we never reach 100GB in any given month (nbn).

        • Well you don't stream a fair bit ;)

It wouldn't take long to use 100gb in a month for most

    • I'm with you, it's only really useful for those without good NBN IMO.

    • Same people that need minimum 128GB storage.

  • +6

Imagine getting the iphone 12 pro 5G and having to use it on Optus 🐌

    • +4

Normally I'd agree, but from what I've heard Optus has the highest amount of 5G RF bandwidth out of the big three. So theres a chance its won't be a crowded as their 4G service

      • +1

Hopefully. I can only go off my experience. I’ve always wanted to love Optus as the ‘underdog’ but their speeds have always been crappy. Been with boost for last couple of years, it’s like a revelation.

      • +3

Are you an Optus rep? They've been known to oversubscribing their network from as long as I can remember and I don't think they'd change, even if ACMA give them free 5g licence.

  • +2

    So basically I pay 799+85*24-1699 = $1140 on a 24-month mobile plan, not really a cheap plan

    • +1

      That's $47.50/month for 150gb (for 24 months).

      • Tbh not that bad if u are intending to keep the phone for at least 2 years and really need that much data.

If not get it outright jump on a cheap byo

  • +1

Might as well wait and get the iPhone 12 Pro Max available in November. Only $150 more and you get an extra 0.6 inches of screen.

    • +1

      That's $250/extra inch.

      • +41

I'm sure there are lots of people out there happy to pay $250 to get an extra inch…

        • +5

Sounds like you are one of them

        • There's a pill for that apparently…

How Apple came up with the new iPhones lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkqk82gxGq8

    • +1

Just needs a guy from Samsung looking through the window.

      • And laughing? Because we all know Samsung/android are years ahead of Apple in terms of feature ideas

        • +1

Wtf… You haven't even gotten a single neg!

You must buy a lotto ticket!

          • +2

@scud70: Lol I'm confused. That is the way it's always been though right? Apple releasing "new" features that had been on android for 5 years already

            • +2

@Benjamin7711: Spoke too soon sorry! … I use both and yes to somethings and no to others… Apple likes to wait for android to try something then if it catches on incorporate it later on… Android phone manufacturers also add crap to differentiate from other Androids so they end up looking like they are always innovating (aside from. Google AOS) … At this stage theres bugger all to add to phones that isnt a gimmick or is meaningful…

Iphone aside it seems crazy to think $2800+ on floptus which u are stuck with for 2 years is a deal!

              • @scud70: No, too late. PiP was in May 2012 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFpLi116jcE

The 1st USB-C on China's LeTV phone was Apr 2015 & not yet on iPhones :(

                • @taki: They did usb c… On one side of the cable loll but then they didnt give you a charger that it fits with to save the environment….. So there! Apple wins!

  • +1

They should be throwing in the charger and cable too

    • +5

It's apparently better for the environment if you get those separately/elsewhere.

      • +3

Hint: it's not. It's mostly a cost saving for Apple. The environmental impact will be pretty minimal.

Having said that, I expect that most manufacturers will follow suit in the next year or two.

        • +6

          /s!

        • +3

Hint: it's not. It's mostly a cost saving for Apple. The environmental impact will be pretty minimal.

Show your workings. Seriously. How will it have minimal impact on the environment?

Apple hasn't had to manufacture millions upon millions of chargers - that's a whooollleee lot of materials they haven't used.

Sooo many of iPhone purchasers in this range will already be previous iPhone users - plenty of chargers with lightning cables available.

They've kept the price of the iPhone the same from last years models - so they haven't increased the price for 5G, unlike most other brands. If you're buying this phone and you don't have a USB-C charger - you can buy one for what, $25? Probably way cheaper if you don't mind buying off Amazon or Ebay.

Are Apple doing this just for the environment? Hell no, of course not. It's absolutely to maintain a bottom line and provide value for Shareholders. They're a publicly owned company. But I certainly hope other phone manufacturers follow suit.

          • @ThithLord: It's a good move they don't force their chargers and the Lightning headphones anymore. But we also see how it is a part of the marketing, if not quite a cynical play.

They could've replaced the Lightning port with USB-C already, but instead they'll make it another eco impact next year. And it's going to be great, but why not years ago?

            • @pizzaguy:

They could've replaced the Lightning port with USB-C already

Question is, will they ever? Maybe. They've now made the iPad Air USB-C.

But there's no way they could move to USB-C and not include the charger this time. They'd p1ss off users who've got plenty of Lightning cables (I must have ten or 20, cos of my work), they'd p1ss off the haters as well for doing that (kind of like a h8-boner).

Thing is, did you see one of the major draws to the new line up that hardly anyone is talking about in this thread? The mag-safe function.

Apple will likely not even move to USB-C - they'll go port-less. No one uses the cable for data transfer; it isn't needed. It's purely for charging purposes. Now that will p1ss people off!

          • +1

@ThithLord: Dont forget more than 50% smaller box meaning more phones in the same pallet across the supply chain. That itself is a massive improvement. I care two hoots about the charger though. I havent even used the one's I got with the phone now. I use a wireless charging pad anyway.

      • +2

Its not saving the environment. It's apple saving the money and making more money from selling these separate.

        • +1

Lucky we have weekly deals for multi port chargers.

      • Even words when you order separately & they package 2 separate items + postage.

    • +13

They include the cable that is incompatible with earlier iPhone charges. So they will be selling a lot more charges or cables.
      Environmently Friendly, my arse.

      • If you have earlier phone chargers, chances are you have a cable lying around too. No?

        • Fair point, although the chargers seem to last longer than the cables.
Shame though they couldn't just move to USB C like everyone else.

        • Actually, I have confirmed the included cable is only compatible with iPhone 11 series charger and nothing earlier. That is poor form.

  • +1

Can you stack the "optus region offer discount 20%" apply to this deal to bring it down to $68pm on the 24m sim plan?

  • +2

Apple prices are going up , its not far when it will be only $5000. This looks so out dated when there are phones with very little hole punch for camera and bezel less full screen. No headphone in the box or charging brick. No high refresh screen, no usb c, no extra feature?

    • +11

      Apple prices are going up

They are out of season now.

They'll go back down in autumn…

      • But then it's just leftover apples from the previous season

      • Cold storage phoools. This is the way.

    • +2

Iphone prices have stayed the same if not gone backwards.

    • +2

Geez, you're not allowed to criticize Apple. /s

Fairly sure you need to pay a bit more since you need to get the wall adapter (comes with a usb c to lightning cable) and earphones as extras.

    • +1

      and bezel less full screen

Let me know when the Android OEMs can get rid of their MASSIVE chins.

    • +1

It's called the "Apple Tax" people keep buying them so they'll keep making them each year with slight price increases. It'll be interesting to see how well all phones of this price category sell during the middle of a recession and pandemic.

  • +20

I don't really see this as a great deal unless you need optus or the 150gb.

Consider instead the current JB hifi offer, $59/month for 12 months, 80gb and a $500 giftcard.

The RRP of the 12 pro is 1699, use the $500 giftcard and it's $1199. Sure that's $400 more upfront than the HN deal however remember the difference in monthly cost.

    $85 vs $59 is a $26/month difference, over 12 months that's $312.

Consider just the first 12 months.

With telstra, you pay $1199 upfront and $59/month, after 12 months you've spent $1907 and are free to go where ever.
With optus, you pay $799 upfront and $85/month, after 12 months you've spent $1819 and are still locked into another 12 months.

After 12 months you've spent about the same with either company, but with telstra you're free to move away to a cheaper plan, or take advantage of the next deal that comes up. With optus you're locked into a further 12 months of paying $85/month with nothing to show for it.

I'd only advocate the optus deal if you need to specifically be on optus, like say if you're in an area with poor telstra reception or need the 150gb. For most people the telstra deal will cost them a lot less in the long run

    • +2

Thanks for laying this out so well. I just did the math on it too and came to a similar conclusion but wasn't sure how to explain it!

    • roaming data was the main reason why it is worth it. but now…… not required because of COVID-19

      • +1

Covid aside, unless you travelled very frequently, it was still better value to get a local data sim, or use truephone/gigsky.

Dual sim phones basically put the nail into the coffin of needing roaming data, and a piddly 2 or 4gb isn't much anyway.

    • Exactly, to put it into a different perspective: 2 years of $1,907/year gives you an iPhone 12 Pro and (very likely) an iPhone 13 Pro (Telstra).
2 years of $1,819/year gives you just the iPhone 12 Pro (Optus).
How people can upvote this deal is beyond me.

      • My only note is the $500 is for today only, then its back down to $400, it still presents fairly well though

        • Couldn’t edit my previous post, the 2nd year with Optus would of course be ‘only’ $1,020 so my example of 2 phones for the price of one was silly and incorrect.

I’ve been watching this space very closely for the past 3 years and the $500 discounts on the 12m plans come and go every single quarter. Jump on the 12m plan today, port out to one of the mentioned cheap non-Telstra network deals for a bit and jump back on (or just go cheap for a year and bank your savings - I just wanted to prove the point that you could rinse and repeat the new phone offer, most people will happily keep their iPhone 12 Pro for 2 to 4 years of course).

      • Well the telstra deal isn't strictly better, since that's 80gb and this deal is for 150gb.

The optus deal may be better for some. Also sometimes telstra reception isn't better than optus. I have both optus and telstra on my iphone XS in dual sim mode, and i switch data between the two depending on which one is getting better reception at the time.

        • But Telstra's 5G network is a lot better than Optus and Vodafone. You're also able to change the plan to the 180gb 65$/mth plan if you wanted to get that promotion right now.

          • @daniesaurs: You'd get slugged the ETC, even if you were to upgrade your plan to a higher cost one, since you'd be moving from a 12 month contract to a month to month plan.

You're probably right about the 5G, i've got no experience with it as I don't have a 5G phone yet.

I was seriously considering upgrading this year, but after finding out that 5G doesn't work in dual sim mode I canned that idea.
I carry 2 lines (work + personal), so the 12 doesn't appeal to me if i can't actually use the most notable feature.

        • Well the telstra deal isn't strictly better, since that's 80gb and this deal is for 150gb.

Telstra at least slow you down to 1.5mbps when you burn through all that data - Optus continue to charge $10/1GB excess…

    • Jilien is the real one

  • Those were the days when you could buy apple/samsung flagship phone for same price. Now $$$.

    • Like the note20 ultra?

  • Well, I believe my Iphone6s can last another 5 years.

    • +2

      nope

    • I wouldn't bet on it, unless you don't mind the new apps won't install or work.

    • +3

Maybe another 3. But that’s pushing it.

  • For tax purposes, buying the phone outright and having a plan with JB/telstra works out cheaper.

    • this is similar to jb/telstra. you purchase the phone outright on a sim plan

      • Except that the percentage you claim back on the phone goes down from from the total of 1199 (potentially 1699 if you swap the gift card for cash and use the cash directly) to 799. And you're locked in to 24 months at a higher plan rate. Lower plan rates with a higher outright cost work out better for tax in general. This is even more so if you decide to downgrade plans after 1 year, thereby saving on plan costs.

        • good point. I haven't purchased this type of deal from Harvbey norman before. So I don't know if they invoice you $799 for the iphone 12 Pro. or do the same as JB and invoice you $1,699 and apply gift vouchers of $900.

I won't be doing this because I don't need this type of plan for at least another 1-2 years. because of (COVID-19), can't travel overseas.

This type of plan was fantastic when I needed the free roaming data prior to covid-19. saves me at least $30-50 a month on cheaper overseas prepaid data cards.

Only Optus offers free roaming data at the moment. I hope Telstra will offer it soon.

        • In your example, with JB/Telstra, you’d get a tax invoice for $1,699 with $500 paid via gift card and the remaining balance via your payment option of choice. If it’s a work phone, you can still depreciate staring off from $1,699.

      • No it not similar. It a 24 months contract. 12 months longer than the JBHIFI deal.

    • How does it work with Tax, sorry not sure as I never get any benefit on tax on buying phone :(

      • +3

Unless you can claim that you use your phone for work - you won't get a benefit. If you do use it for work, you can claim a percentage of that you use for work against your taxable income. For more information, you can look up what is claimable allowance on the ATO - it's quite a friendly website for my industry.

E.g. If you're a tradesperson and you have a phone which you use 80% of the time to organise calls, meetings with clients etc. etc. and 20% of the time to call your mum and wife, then you can claim 80% of the cost of the phone and the plan against your taxable income. So phone is $1000, plan over 1 year is $1000, you can claim $1600, so it reduces your taxable income by $1600.

  • +1

    $85 a month!

  • +1

    too expensive

  • I'm looking at the normal 12 not pro

  • +3

+$2k For a phone and no charger.

Argue the environment all your want but:
    1. A large portion of Apple users don’t have a USB-C adapter but possibly a whole bunch of USB-A adapters. Which you can‘t even use with the cable provided with the phone. Net result is most people will need to buy a new adapter so limited benefit for the environment due to the hydrocarbons required for delivering individual adapters and individual packaging. Though a few billions in savings for Apple which is the primary driving factor for the exclusion.
    2. If Apple was serious about the environment they would make modular phones, not make phones obsolete via software updates, and not have a yearly release of new phones. If each Apple phone was pushed for an extra year of service imagine how much larger an impact to the environment that would be.

I like Apple products but at least give me an option for charger included with the phone, and give others the option to opt out if the environment is their personal concern.

    • +2

Tbh I feel like the no charger argument is getting stale. I'm not sure even most apple fan boys would agree it's something that they like even if they support. It leaves a sour taste in basically everyone's mouth.

Having said that - I feel that this might be a direction that other major companies might move into in the coming years if it garners enough traction, kinda like headphone jacks.

It's a shame, but Apple knew it certainly isn't a game changer in the sense that the charging brick was not what stopped a person from getting one phone over another. Neither was the headphone jack. Most people probably just adapted and moved on.

But I do agree that it's a half-arsed (they would argue "compromise") attempt at saving the environment. Then again, if they do go carbon neutral in 2030 that's a great feat. And to be fair, environmental friendliness typically comes at a cost no matter which industry you're in.

    • +2

not make phones obsolete via software updates

Name any other company where the latest version of its smartphone OS runs on 5-year old devices.

It’s not Apple who makes phones obsolete (there are still people actively using iPhone 4). It’s the developers who stop updating their apps on old software.

      • -1

Name any other company where the latest version of its smartphone OS runs on 5-year old devices.

Beggars belief why they keep parroting these lines, doesn't it, Haru?
