  • That's annoying, I was looking at this yesterday then bought something else.

Good deal, though I'd personally prefer a 1TB/1.5TB. 500GB goes surprisingly fast..

  • +1

Looks awesome, waiting on a 2tb to go on offer!

  • "Preformatted for Windows"
so they won't work on a mac?

  • formatted to NTFS? Will it go to Fat or Fat32 though? (for PS3)

    • +1

Pretty sure you need to plug it into your computer and format as Fat/Fat32. Don't know if that's all it will take to get it working on the PS3 though =P

      • +1

Pretty sure would need to be partitioned to accommodate Fat32 as there is a size limit on Fat32.
        Can a computer nerd confirm?

        • 32gb in windows
          different on mac

  • can the Simple Save s/w be disabled or is it locked like the Hitachi LifeStyle?

    • +1

Simple save can be removed completely with a format (some tricks to it though I forget).

    expensive

    • +1

Not at all. Are you not aware of the current situation as mentioned in the post below yours by chris_21?

  • Good deal, especially in light of the Thailand flooding (wiped out majority of hard drive manufacturing for the world), i expect that once this stock is sold you will not have these prices for a few months.

The Good Guys have the Samsung S2 portable 750gig for $69 (pay less pay cash) however i believe it is USB 2.0 (but it does not say).

  • Anyone knows whether this is 2.5" or 3.5"?
    Based on the size (16.8cm x 12.9cm), its most likely a 3.5", isn't it?

    • portable means 2.5"

      • Thanks bbyboy, initially I'm a bit confused with the size in the spec.
But I reckon if that's the box size, not the product itself then it makes sense..

  • WD Essentials passport 1tb 2.5" usb3.0 for $118 is a better deal. Igot mine from Harvey Norman last week but the price was meant to go up, the guy said. However, Domayne's website has the same drive for $118

    • SamGate Digital Necessities 2TB 2.5" USB 4 for $209 is a better deal. I got mine from the future but I realize not everyone is wanting to pay twice as much for a product.

      • Read the above comments. There are at least a couple of people who are looking for higher-capacity drives. I'm just giving another option based on what I know. Your comment hardly benefits anyone.

        • My point was, that even if a more expensive product is better value, since it is more expensive, not everyone will be interested in buying it ;)

        • +1

Ok, noted, but I was only mentioning it because of the other comments that seemed to prefer higher capacities.. :) Cheerio!

      • USB4 now huh? Nice grammar.

  • Iomega 1tb from computer store Orange (also on eBay) for $105 is a better performing drive. The WD maxes out writing at around 66mb/s whereas the Iomega can do around 50% faster according to some UK website I forgot the name

  • +1

BE WARNED: This drive is not SATA. It will also not work on PS3 (could be power related - may work with a good powered USB hub). I foolishly bought one a while ago.

It is 2.5" but I reiterate, you cannot use this drive as an internal drive.

    • if it is not sata then what is it? ide?

      • its USB. some drives have a SATA to USB converter interally. This one doesn't.

        • i dont get it. every 2.5" or 3.5" hdd ive seen is either ide or sata. i have never seen a hdd with straight out usb interface

        • Dont ask me why but they removed the sata connector on these portable drives , Maybe because they didnt want them to cannibalise the internal HDD market?

I have a WD passport that broke , and I opened the case and there were no connectors, just a soldered on MIcrousb connection

    • Not work on PS3? Thanx Wallyt99.

  • There's the same hp 3.0 portable hardrive around but (1tb) for $99 dollars. Is that cheap?

  • Got me one, thanks! Been looking for a decently priced one that doesn't look like the price was hiked coz of Thailand floods…

  • Good work theearth. Thanks for the post. Got one. Cheers

  • Got this same HDD in a similar deal not too long ago. It has been very good to me!

  • I think OW has a 1tb 3.0 for $109.

  • OW FGate had heaps of the USB2 Seagate 2.5" 500Gb again for $65 last week. These drives can be removed and put into laptops etc as they have a standard SATA port. This make the bare drive $34 cheaper than MSY (or the WD USB2 500Gb drive).

I think the fact big retailers hard drive prices are mostly the same as some weeks ago, and in some cases discounted, shows that the likes of MSY and Synnex are PRICE GOUGING and will probably end up at the ACCC again. Be warned MSY.

  • it sounds good, if it backs it up on its own; whats the warranty ?

  • Out of stock
