Harvey Norman - 50% off Virgin Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband, $24.50. 6GB Data, 100 Day Expiry

130

I was looking for a wireless broadband deal with a long expiry and found this in a snail mail catalogue that came to my house this week. Details:

  • Virgin Mobile
  • 6 GB data
  • 100 day expiry
  • USB modem included
  • Downloads counted per KB but uploads counted also.

Seems like a good deal to me, but if anyone has found a better deal with a long expiry, let us know.

Enjoy…

I have a mate who went to get this a over a week ago. There were none in stock, and apparently they never had stock at the time of running this promotion. He was told by the salesman there are none in the state (SA). He has placed one on back order at that price, but has been given no timeframe, and still hasn't heard anything.
    Ring before you go!

and yes very good deal, if it ever comes through.

    • Yes, agree that they probably didn't have much stock to begin with, but i rang both Chadstone and Springvale stores in Victoria and they've taken my details and put it on back order. They reckon approximately 3 days to 1 week delivery time for the next batch. Good luck to us to see if they actually come through. I figure ~$8 for 2GB data/mth on Virgin (Optus) with a free modem has got to be a pretty good deal.

Be noted that Virgin 3G does not allow SIP.

Is it stopped or just a policy? As Im using pennytel on a Virgin data sim right now

  • Just get 2 woolworths vouchers. 2 x 45day 5GB, $25 total. same network.
Assuming you have a drawer full of USB modems like most people here :-)

    • I was looking at the Woolworths pre-paid recharge vouchers also, but i believe they don't officially support 'non mobile' devices (eg wireless broadband modems). Do you have confirmation that the Woolworths pre-paid SIMs actually work with the 3G modems?

      http://www.woolworthsmobile.com.au/terms-conditions

"Excludes mobile handset tethering and use of non mobile devices. "

      • yeah that's just bogus..
I called optus up and asked about that, the tech said that so long as the APN on the device is set to "yesinternet" (as opposed to "yesconnect") it will work no problems. I can confirm it works fine in a Huawei e220. Apparently you can't use the data for tethering on the iPhone though.

  • I also like very long expiry as I'm a low volume user (<1GB a month). Getting an Optus prepaid 8GB suits my needs. It has 6 month expiry! Comes with 50 free national SMS too. Bought from eBay for about $50.

    • I'm similar to you, probably 1GB/mth for surfing/email is sufficient. While the Optus 8GB pre-paid is a wi-fi hotspot device (and probably more flexible) and this one isn't; if you bought 2 of these for $49, you'd get 200 days (almost 7 months) of access (if you activated one after the other) and 12GB of data…could be another option for you.

  • 100 day expiry makes this awesome. I'm getting more :)

  • is this the normal usb modem or the premium?

    • From the picture on the HN website and the Virgin Mobile website, it looks like the premium modem (but i can't confirm modem model number). Aparently has faster upload speeds.

      • if someone could confirm that would be great. A good deal if its the premium modem. Will head down tomorrow and pick one up.

  • does anyone know what date this must be activated by?

  • just spoke to harvey norman city west (perth). it is the standard stick, not the premium.

    • smerm07 - did they have any in stock?

Does anyone know offhand if there are any in Perth?

vodafone have 12gb over 365 days for $150

Telstra have 10GB for same price/time. Much better value is speed and reliability mean anything.

      • i've been using voda for the past month. no complaints about speed or reliability from me…

Exactly. The fact is that the Vodafone network is still broken in many places and for many people.

Just today I was hunting around for prepaid data, I'll definitely be going with Telstra http://www.telstra.com.au/bigpond-internet/mobile-broadband/…

Putting a Vodafone SIM in my device is like putting water into the fuel tank of a car.
