Lost a 8tb drive in my NAS the day after prime deals and waiting for something to come up. Found this deal on Amazon AU that is 17% off.
Can’t be too fussy when it comes to data loss, but a bargain is a bargain for anyone who missed out on the prime day.

Thats a SMR drive, not suitable for NASs
8tb should be around 225 to be considered a bargain…
Feel sorry for you given Prime sale was just last week and there were some very good savings on WD external drives… they had 12TBs going for this price, and 14TBs for a smidgen under $300.
It's $231 from the US though … https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07D5V2ZXD
You’d have to pay GST on top of that price as well.
I thought it's already built into the price listed for Amazon?
Not sure. I use the US site. If there a difference when it says ‘through the US’?
@Icecold5000: It means it ships from a US warehouse and will be US stock. In this case it means it'll ship with a US power adapter which from memory are 110 - 230v but you may need a pin adapter. I've also heard you can contact Western Digital to get an AU plug.
GST is included already, correct.
8T $209 for prime day deal.
Better wait for Black Friday sales
What about Aussie Post doing 4TB for ~$80?
Wasn't that a USB powered 2.5" drive? Very different to these Elements drives which are externally powered (ie with a power plug) and are usually quite a bit faster performance wise… or alternatively, they're great for shucking which is what many people on here do with them.
I don't know, did you check; I just heard of the deal somewhere and I thought I would put it on here.
If you want to check further into the deal, go ahead, I don't mind at allFYI it was the Seagate Expansion Portable.
@jace88: It's irrelivent anyway as it looks like the deal is dead;
how can people buy shit off Aussie Post when it is a Sunday? You found it quick thou :)
Nowadays I only use USB 3.0 portable drives without external power. I think these are more reliable than desktop hard drives. I certainly had quiet a few failed on me.
Reliability is highly subjective, but the convenience is certainly there for portable drives.
As far as I'm concerned I don't trust any drive - SSD or HDD - so anything with important photos etc is already triplicated (redundant local copies, cloud backups, cold storage). HDDs will inevitably fail, but I was wholly suprised when SSDs started dying on me as well - I'd falsely assumed at the time they were more robust.
I'm actually going to downvote the deal because very recently there was an Amazon deal for 8TB WD external drive very close to $200 and I want people to know this is the figure to aim for if you want a good value deal.
So you are negging this deal because of an expired deal from Amazon UK was cheaper?
Or did you find another and not bothered to link it.I needed a drive that I could get quickly that was not SMR.
I think your negs are unjustified IMOMaybe the downvote was not justified but in no way is this a good deal.
In recent months 12TB drives have been just over $300, in fact a 14TB WD drive was just over $300 recently.
One shouldn't be paying much more than $100/4TB for an external Western Digital drive. This is more like $135/4TB. It's a bad deal. The only reason you've purchased at this time is because you were desperate for a drive now.
Look $235 from Amazon AU but US import for 8TB WD still not a great deal but better.
while i think a neg is a little harsh (given there is nothing cheaper at the moment), i think your comments are on point, have some pluses.
I do think this is a pretty bad deal though, specially with black Friday around the corner, for those who can wait.
i mean all you have to do is look at the price history to see this isnt a fantastic deal:
Any reason you are not picking this one https://www.amazon.com.au/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG…
which is around 227$ ?I needed it urgently, as I lost a drive in the NAS and this is from the USA.
It's currently $238 delivered.
Not sure how this compares but found the barracuda to be cheaper here for 8tb.
