They're both some of the finest FPSs of the decade, regardless.
Splitting hairs over which is better is only done by people who never bothered to finish Eternal and who last played through Doom 2016 some years ago.
Doom 2016's movement feels so rudimentary and slow compared to Eternal and the combat becomes rather repetitive with the Super Shotgun/Rocket Launcher/Gauss Cannon becoming the dominant weapons for most of the game, whereas almost every weapon in Doom Eternal has a purpose in dealing with specific enemy types and remains relevant throughout the campaign.
Doom Eternal is more challenging but then it had to be, if it weren't it'd feel like a re-skinned Doom 2016 campaign and the hardcore fanbase who got through Doom 2016 on Nightmare would find it utterly underwhelming. Not to mention, it fits better with the lore as well; Doom 2016 was about the Doomslayer taking the fight to hell's dootstep, Doom Eternal is about the forces of hell regrouping and making one last attempt to wipe out humanity and the Doomslayer once and for all.
Picked it up earlier today, also note that Jackbox Party Pack #2 & #4 are both $9.23 each.
