Email Hosting for Personal Domain

Currently, I have a website hosted via iPage, and they provide mail services too. So, earlier I used to update blogs etc. on the website, and it’s pretty much stale from a year now.

Planning to keep the domain (no content will be uploaded - probably a static page) and host it elsewhere like azure or aws as iPage is pretty expensive - that’s the easy part.

But where do I host the mail services?
O365 business seems to be expensive as I don’t want more than 2-3 email for personal use.
Any other providers? I know I’ll have to add DNS entries for MX, but keen to know where I can host email or any recommendation on providers?

Cheers

I think Zuver has an annual plan for $36. But I find that send and receiving emails are delayed by a minute, but this is probably due to the server being behind cloud flare.

I've often used the Zoho 'Free Forever' plan for my clients and have always found it to work well.

  • I use mxroute.

Doesn't sound like a pleasant to deal with company.

Please note that we DO NOT OFFER FREE TRIALS. Do not sign up and request a refund after agreeing to our no refunds policy. If you don't know if you want to purchase our service, don't.

I would have rather seen "If you don't know if you want to purchase our service, contact us to answer your enquiries."

      • I would have rather seen

        ok.

Never had an issue myself, costs US $10 per year.

I use Fastmail because it's a little cheaper than gsuite, and easier to manage a lot of domains. I'm thinking probably best to set clients up with zoho by default to avoid having to spend a minute longer explaining why paying for email is worth it. I would have just used gsuite but I kinda like having all my crazy domain emails in an entirely different app/webmail. You have to keep the craziness separate from your personal email.

Of course you can host your own email too, but don't do it, it's never worth it. Sleep better at night knowing someone else is meant to be responsible for running it and keeping it going.

    • I'm also a long term Fastmail user. Their mail setup is exceptional and as AustriaBargain mentioned, is great for multiple domains.

I particularly rely on their powerful filtering alongside a wildcard address ([email protected] gets delivered, but then moved to the right spot). You also pay per-inbox, but can send from of other virtual addresses (unlimited from domains you control, approx 5 from fm-owned domains) at no extra cost.

Address books and calendars also sync easily with all the usual computer and phone OSes.

They have a global staff but are headquartered in Melbourne and use US infra. Only downside is they invoice in $USD.

      • Yeah every time I go to add a domain to Fastmail, they make it easier by stepping you through and telling you what to add and where. If you're just one person managing lots of domains, or wanting to catch all emails to certain domains, Fastmail is decent. Gmail lets you set wildcards up too but it's harder to do and I think the total wildcard limit is a lot lower.

  • In order of what I would recommend:
    1. ProtonMail - 48 euros/year
    2. Tutanota - 12 euros/year
    3. Mailbox.org - 12 euros/year

All three are commonly recommended by privacy and security advocates/experts around the world. Because of the nature of the services, some features you might want might not be available so do your research. E.g. Tutanota does not allow you to use any of the standard protocols - IMAP, POP3 or SMTP.

All three allow for "catch-all" for your custom domain which means you can have any alias you want to define on the spot to still go to the same inbox.

    • Some of my accounts I forward all mail to a Gmail account.
You can't do that with any of those - but I do like them from the privacy/security standpoint.

      • Gsuite will give you a gmail-like experience.

For the accounts I want to use gmail for I just forward from mxroute to gmail - costs US $10 per year.
Gsuite is quite a bit more than that.

I have zuver and forward email to my Gmail account. Within Gmail, I have different sender addresses. The Gmail address might be visible if the receiver checks the headers but otherwise it works just fine.

With this scheme, you just pay for the domain. You can set up "A" records to point to some static page hosting provider for the web content.

How much do you plan to pay monthly or yearly? and what space are you looking at? I can recommend you few hosts. That will do the job for you.
You simply get a cheap hosting, use it for your emails, and u can also upload website. namecheap and ipage are one of th cheapest in Market.

    • Hey mate, I’m with iPage and they aren’t cheap after 1st year. Have been paying like $150 or so for an year, which I believe is insane.

Compared to namecheap - around $16 for domain or around $80 per year.

      • Hey mate, try namecheap, they have this good discount right now, u can get for 10-22/year, including hosting and email.
How much space do you need? and how much do you plan to pay btw? and do you need Australian servers?

  • I use Migadu, USD$19 / year - check the limits work for you: https://www.migadu.com/pricing/

  • Don't need GSuite, just forward everything to your personal Gmail.

    • That won't allow sending from the custom domain, only receiving.

      • Use SMTP server of registrar, work fine. I'd already tried with both Gmail and Outlook.

        • Is that using the "send mail as" option in Gmail settings?

          • @miarn: yes, in Gmail or Outlook (website or mobile app) you can select alias from a drop list to start a new email. I found this is easy for me to just have 1 mail app in my phone and I can set up filters to organise email in different folders.

  • Zuver if you want hosting and email in one - their cheapest plan should be fine ($40/year) for email and a static site, unless you're getting a lot of traffic.

Otherwise I've been using VentraIP email, which is $3-5 per month, depending on storage requirements, and does everything I need.

Another option to look into for static site hosting is GitHub - you can host static sites for free including using your own domain.

Edit - also look into postale.io, they have a free plan I believe.

  • I find that using regular web hosting plans that have email hosting included better than the specific email-only ones like gsuite. Most companies will have email hosting included with their web hosting and with SMTP/POP/IMAP you can basically use any email app you like. Plus, you get all the perks of routing, alias, spam filters and multiple accounts from cPanel. For a few bucks a month you can get a pretty decent email setup with a lot of control.

    • You can enable SMTP,POP3,IMAP in Gmail but you don't need that because most of email client support Google Mail out of the box. For me, the spam filter and push mail in Gmail is the best.
