          Username checks out ;-)

A great product. We use it at least twice a day (yes we are lazy). The timer marking wears off quickly though, so need to take good care of it.

First review is pictures of one on fire!

    • +3

Theres a review a guy keeps calling it an Air Dryer LOL

I had the older XL model and that last me 8-9 years before it kicked the bucket.

    • +5

"It was a very petrifying experience."

    • Hahaha

  • +1

Have one and been using it for two weeks now. Great product. We now make our own thinly cut chips. Have fried fish and pork in it too and it did the job properly.

  • Oven folks… it’s an oven.

That heats up in a quarter of the time, congratulations.

    • +17

Let's say it takes 16 minutes to heat a standard oven and 4 minutes to heat this.

Let's say the limiting factor on getting your food cooked is oven heating time (and your subsequent post work routine before you are able to relax / get to bed sits behind that task)

      Let's say you've saved 12 minutes in heat-up time.

Let's say you lose 4 minutes of that to cleaning the air fryer.

Let's say that's a net save of 8 minutes. 5 days a week (we'll be using it daily)

Let's say that translates to 40 minutes more sleep during a working week or 40 minutes more leisure time during a working week.

Let's say conservatively 40 working weeks use a year over say, 5 years (conservative life of the unit).

80 hours you've gained in your life over 3 years.

$3.73 per hour of extra life you get to live.

One should ask oneself this question - is an extra hour of your life not committed to waiting on a conventional oven to heat up worth $3.73?.

(disclaimer: I do not own one nor do I believe this calculation in any way reflects reality)

      • +5

You'll def end up saving some money on your electricity bill, but i dont think i ever just stand there and wait for the oven to heat up.
Easy clean up is a good time saver though

        • I only clean mine like once a month

      • +2

Interesting… $3.73 per hour of extra life.. never heard anyone provide such raw perspective.. you make a good point. But I don’t think I’ll be eating chips and chicken wings every day lol

        • Haha, I do that with a lot of my purchases actually, either using time or in 'the importance of quality" (say a good bed, or good chair etc)'. Almost had myself justifying an Aeron during WFH until rationality returned.

10 year warranty / minimum lifespan
          Sitting 8-10 hours a day.
          5 day working week.
          40 weeks a year.
          10 years.

$2300 / 2000 days = $1.15 a day to give your lumbar region the best support it can get for 10 years.

(actually less than that as it's "the gap between a normal chair and the cost of ultra premium" as well as tax return too)

          BUT

You've gotta draw the line somewhere. The time calculation is always a good one though. We don't get any of it back.

          • @Lawsuit: Damn… when you put it that way… now I gotta buy an Aeron

      • Our oven is a huge energy drain so we've saved the purchase price just on reduced electricity bills alone.

      • we'll be using it daily

Let's say your fat and lazy

        • You ok champ?

    • +1

It is true, these are smaller convection ovens. I'm considering it just for the cleaning convience, I dislike cleaning the oven and this looks significantly easier.

    • +2

Air fryer also save about 10 mins cook time and 10 mins cleaning time for me (cleaning oven and trays are a nightmare). So, including ~10min saving in pre-heat, that's 30min saved a day at least, which I can spend on earning more income, or more time to watch movies with my kids. When you only have 2-3 hours in the evening with your family, every minutes count.

    • but it comes with a special tray that circulates air around all the food rather than just the top with an normal baking dish …. though l do chips in oven on perforated pizza tray so same result.

Overpriced. Paid $99 for my air fryer and it does exactly the same thing as this one

    • Was wondering if there was a performance hike (or other benefit) due to the substantial price difference

      • Brand name maybe?

    • +3

I have the kmart one with the digital display. It's half the size of this but was 59 odd dollars and has lasted years. It's not a rice cooker with a fan.

      • My Kmart air fryer cooking pan becomes rusted and the non-stick surface is very rough and a sticky mess just within a month of purchase. Looking around it seems that isn't uncommon. We washed the parts by hand with soft sponge only, not sure what went wrong.

    • +1

      Especially for a "Phillips".

I got the Kogan one and it came with a sticker on a part that said never touch because it'll burn you, that bit is right at the end of the handle. I wish I paid a bit more for a more sensibly designed airfryer now. The sticker put on after it was designed reminded me of the Corn Baller from Arrested Development https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps6mpuJuF54

The sticker means people actually burned themselves on the handle and they didn't bother redesigning it. But I like that it's cheap enough that I wouldn't feel bad about not cleaning it properly and it just dying three years from now. Better a $50 air fryer dies than the more expensive stove top.

Have one, love it. Don't use my regular oven anymore as this is so much faster, less effort required (no flipping), and easier to clean (you don't need to clean it very often). Yes though, you can get a similar effect in an oven, but that's not the point, the point is that it's just easier in the airfryer. I also think it gets a slightly better effect than my oven, for example i can't get a good crackling in my oven but will get it effortlessly in my air fryer. The draining of oil also lets you do things like end up with ultra crispy bone dry bacon which i like but which is very difficult in an oven or frypan.

That said, i have this exact model as well as the smaller one. Slightly disappointingly, the numbers on the dial and temp control are rubbing off. Also the dial doesn't seem the greatest and sometimes setting it for just a few minutes doesn't turn it on at all. Very minor, but sometimes the fan is so powerful light items are blown into direct contact with the heating element, so light meats and bread slices need to be cooked with caution.

    • My dial also is not aligned, the off position is more like at the 3 minute marker, easy to compensate though. Also, the plastic around the exhaust has yellowed. Still think it's great and recommend.

    • Also on a REALLY hot day, you could have an airfryer running in your garage all day making everyone a supply of pies or whatever, without it adding heat to your home like running an oven all day would. Some people live without AC so these things can make a difference. On a calm day you could even plug it in outside.

      • I pretty regularly plug it outside to cook very fatty foods like crackling. Might be more a reflection of the poor rangehood i have though.

      • … or you could use a solar oven

  • +12

We used clear nail polish on the numbers when we first purchased and this has stopped the numbers rubbing off. Still going strong after 6 months of daily usage.

    • +1

      @Togsy

"We used clear nail polish on the numbers when we first purchased and this has stopped the numbers rubbing off."

Well done… I was waiting for someone to post a tip… You may now say to your air fryer "Hey Philips Air Fryer… You've just been "MacGyver'ed"! '

    • Won't transparent sticky tape do the same thing?

      • Yes, I use it on cards like woolworths rewards cards and they take a good beating

      • Not sure the tape would be up to taking the heat and when it comes off it would take the numbers with it.

  • +1

    re: dishwasher safe

anyone care to comment on the non-stock enamal wearing off at all?

    • yes, i would like to know too!

    • I have an older model (Twin Turbostar) for several years, and I've always been dishwashing it. Nothing's peeled off so far from the dishwasher.
(I'm assuming it's the same non-stick material used for this.)

    • +5

Yes it is great when washing the tray and basket in the dishwasher. The surface coating doesn't "melt" off.

I started off with an Aldi Ambiano $89 Airfryer. That was great. But totally not dishwasher safe. The plastic around the basket track start to melt after repeated use. They tell you that it is not dishwasher safe.

I'm sure there are alot of comments on this but the Philips, although expensive is much much better than the kmart(Anko) and Aldi ones. I've tried all of them.

I've upgraded to Airfryer XXL hd8601 and can tell you it is in a league of its own. That extra $400 you pay (I paid $503 after haggling with jbhifi) was worth it for me. Overall if you're doing fish, chips, nuggets, they'll all produce similar results. But if you're into cooking roast crackling pork, garlic prawns, roast chicken, xo pipis, rack off lamb, etc. You'll notice a huge difference either through time saving, cooking control or outcome quality.

Also the comments regarding how this is an overrated oven are absolute BS and demonstrate they have never had an Airfryer. I can tell you the things I've listed above come out far better in an Airfryer than an convention Oven. The Airfryer does a better job of cooking the outside and keeping moisture inside the food

      • I want to add that there is a lot of science behind this piece of technology. To be honest, I'm a terrible cook, I can barely boil an egg and I'd be the first person Gordon Ramsay would throw out of his kitchen. But this Airfryer technology isn't just amazing but absolute brilliance. I've been able to make so many of my family and friends think I'm an awesome cook with this.

My best tips for you guys so you can have the same enjoyable times I've had with family and friends over good food :

        1) don't be afraid to experiment
        2) roughly follow cooking recipes, after you do it once, tweak the times. Typically expect the Airfryer to do it in less. As a rough guide, try 20% less time compared to conventional fan forced ovens first.

If you're a bit of a science man like me, you can vary your two main control variables (time and temperature) and see the effect. I assure you after experimenting with this, you will know how to cook awesome things to the precision you are after

        3) Adding water to the base helps control heat and evenness of cooking. It adds a whole new dimension to the cooking process. Is your roast dry?, add water to the base, make sure it stays below the basket line otherwise it'll boil over

        4) aluminium foil is your best friend - just keep in mind that it does restrict air flow in the basket, but maybe that's intentional if you're after the heat application while retaining maximum moisture in the food

        5) wash the Airfryer basket regularly, multiple washes is many times better than one hard scrub wash where you've got hardened baked grease to get off. Even if you have to run your dishwasher once just for the basket, it's worth it. You will regret it, if you have to wash off baked on grease
6)if you haven't bought an Airfryer yet and trying to decide on the size, get the big one. Or you can be like me and buy the small one and then realise I had to buy the bigger one down the track.

        Happy cooking!

  • I know it's decently priced but if you look at the Camecamelcamel link at the top. It was $220 in Feb. So may happen again? Running the gauntlet though!

    • haha i did the same thing! looks like it also went under $240 early December so fingers crossed!

    • I paid 208 for this, July last year.

  • It is also the same price at David Jones if anyone prefers to pick up.

    https://www.davidjones.com/Product/22691816/HD963021-Airfrye…

    • Or After Pay even.

    • DJ price went up as soon as Amazon sold out

  • My family are all big eaters and have wide loads. Anything bigger than this?

    • +3

It's not a toilet, you aren't meant to shit in it.

      • We basically eat a lot. lol

    • Depends what u cook. I have the double layer accessory n its handy for lamb and beef. Whole chicken is disappointing as its only 1.4kg, but can push it to 1.5kg :).

  • Last year July 16th prime day , bought his same fryer for $208.99 <3

  • +1

After using Philips air fryers for years, I am thinking to move to Aldi style Air fryers with double capacity, multiple shelves and half the price. similar models available at Kogan.

  • +2

The one thing I always tell people regarding air fryers: If I had known how good it was, I would've purchased the largest size available from the beginning. Instead I opted for the original size and it's unfortunately just a bit too small for a family of 4. I wish it'd kick the bucket so I can buy the bigger one now…

  • +2

Why not just get a glass round convection oven. Does the same thing but 10x easier to clean. 1/10 to 2/10 of the price

    • Curious to know if you have had or used both? I have had a very simple non branded model Airfryer for years and can not use it enough, I really like the way it cooks and only touch my oven when things either can’t fit in the oven. We use the Air fryer for anything from cakes to salmon and am looking to upgrade to a larger model

      • +2

Yes i had a Singer circle convection oven like this https://126712-362916-raikfcquaxqncofqfm.stackpathdns.com/wp…
        and philips airfryer HD9216/81

They both do the same thing. The singer lasted me 6 years and philips currently just going 8 months. I really believe the airfryer is just the oven in a plastic fancy box. They both heat up in seconds and cook in the same time. The conection oven for me is more practical because, you can easily clean and any drips. The philips is abit harder but it is abit lighter and could argue that it looks better on the bench top

  • Sold out damn.. Wasn't sure on this or the digital display

  • +1

wow, to me this means prime day is not really a huge bargain timing, maybe wait for black friday

  • I bought $49 Woolly one, and it's been good so far. Anything I miss out by not getting this?

  • Can somoene just compare this to the popular Kmart and Kogan options?

Its over 3 x the price, what is the big difference?

  • It looks like it's back in stock!
