Why would one pay more for a drive that has been tested to be somewhat slower than the MX500? Brand loyalty? Build quality? local stock vs. UK?
I believe the MX500 is faster then the Sandisk Plus, so probably not worth it.
But it's also a great price.
Ah I thought SanDisk was better. I'll get the Crucial lol
in SSD's Crucial has been the more trusted and longer standing brand :) not that there's anything wrong with SanDisk ..
Why would you get this instead? It's much worse.
The brand is worse. The speed is worse.
Is there difference between "SSD" and "Standard Packaging"?
I would choose standard packaging personally.
The only difference is the the non-Standard Packaging says: Product ships in Amazon Certified frustration Free Packaging (may differ from Retail Packaging depicted in product collateral)
thanks. got one for my new build.
Got one, thanks.
Hmm, to get this, and then a decent USB 3 to SATA adaptor so that I can use with my Xbox Series X… or just an already enclosed external SSD. Damn that DF video which has left me all confused!
Any cable recommendation?
They recommended the Sabrent cable USB 3.1 cable which supports 10Gbps but can't seem to find it in stock anywhere at a sensible <$50 price.
Yep sold sold out as soon as the digital foundry video went up. I’d love to know anyone else’s recommendations for a USB caddy that supports the full speed of USB 3.1?
@katz: StarTech.com USB 3.1 (10Gbps) Adapter Cable for 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD Drives.
This a reliable brand. $22 at Amazon special. Check it out
@Dienk: I was looking at that. Debating between that and spending a bit more to get the enclosure too with the same controller for about $35 (not on prime special).
@katz: I got the Startech USB3.1 2.5" HDD enclosure from Amazon for $35 (less my $10 promo credit from the $100 gift card) which has the same ASMedia - ASM1351 chipset as the adapter cable for USB 3.1 Gen 2 support.
CDM shows some performance loss connected by USB 3 over being connected directly to SATA connector in my PC.
Previously was getting 540ish read/write connected directly (on CDM), and now getting 512ish for sequential.
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0824ZLXZB not sure if its any good but i have just ordered this for $33.99 and watched a YT vid https://youtu.be/hYfsTLn6K3s?t=360 quicker speeds with the usb-c port than tested on with type-a cable, i suspect he may have connected to a gen 1 type-a port but not sure
A few bucks cheaper than this case which is what I was considering: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00XLB0EOW
Not sure which one is a good choice though TBH…
I think their conclusion was seeing as you can only play backward compatable games off it (or archive new games), you may as well get the chepeast decent SSD you can.
They recommend this adapter: https://www.amazon.com.au/Sabrent-2-5-Inch-Adapter-Optimized… but that is out of stock.
Personally i am wondering whether a fast large drive like the WD D10 is a better solution.
I ended buy something ready to use and I got this https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/sandisk-ex…
Read and write speeds are only 500MB
Hope 2TB price drop faster.
What is the difference between this and the BX500? Someone answer please! Which one to get?
BX500 is DRAMless and therefore performs worse.
Get this. BX500 has worse tech in it so won't be as reliable and may die faster.
That said, it may be good enough for game drive.
BX500 uses QLC, or Quad-level Cells, while MX500 uses TLC, or Triple-level Cells.
TLC has faster access times, and takes longer to wear out than QLC.
I thought bX500 uses TLC as well, but just is DRAMless.
There is evidence that the 1TB and 2TB models are QLC, while the smaller models are still TLC

@JohnathonDoe: Interesting… to save others of reading the article, here's the relevant quote:
Crucial's answer has been a long time coming, but it is now at ComputerBase. As expected, the new models bring changes to the components. Instead of the SM2258XT, the SM2259XT now serves as the controller. In addition, the new models with 1 TB and 2 TB use Microns 96-layer QLC NAND. The editors find it a shame that this important information is still not available on the manufacturer's website. The change from TLC to QLC Flash is potentially a step backwards.
Crazy. Bought one at $299 and thought that was a steal.
Ugh shouldve waited a few days.
How long would postage take for this? I'm hoping a long time so I feel better. 🙄
Usually about a week.
the last time i bought the 12tb wb drives took near 3 weeks before it shipped (but that might be because of how popular they are) but once it did it was quick to arrive, so with all these sales it may take a week or 3 before shipping out
Been waiting for one of these to dip below $300.
Great deal!
Thanks
This deal is the winner. Thank you.
That's actually not a bad deal?
Usually 1tb Would be suitable for everyday tasks, cod's about 200gig, including the os 10gig(or something), Microsoft flight sims 130gig, cyberpunk 2077s probably 70gig.
Well what ever the case 1tb not to bad, 2tb for this price isn't to bad either, maybe the listed amazon price will hit $199 by next year who knows.
Anyone who purchased the 2Tb MX500 had it ship yet?
Yeah mine shipped on the next day (14/10).
Seems to be a pattern with HDD's for me on Amazon; all HDD's I've purchased on there seem to have excessive delays in being shipped…
Granted, each time I contact Amazon support about it, they usually apply credit to my account, so not all bad.
Has anyone who purchased the 2TB received it yet? Mine is saying it's arriving today but there hasn't been any tracking updates since the 14th of October.
It says the delivery is by Australia Post Global. Tracking in "apgecommerce.com" with the order number or tracking ID showed nothing's found. Tracking in Auspost (using the tracking ID without the AP -prefix) shows no updates, but did show the service is by StarTrack. Then tracking in StarTrack shows nothing as well.
Mine should be here today or tomorrow. I had a different tracking number for AusPost to the APG one; it appeared in my list of tracked items on Auspost.
@MattyAu: Thanks for the reply. Mine's not showing up in the tracking list of my Auspost. I'll keep the lookout for any delivery today or tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have something to fiddle with this coming weekend.
@jeffui: Mine is due to be delivered today… finally.
@MattyAu: Then I got this from Amazon.au
"We’re very sorry your delivery is late. Most late packages arrive in a day. If you have not received your package by 13 November, you can come back here the next day for a refund."
@jeffui: So the latest is, the package is lost in transit, and I will be refunded, and a $10 credit for next purchase. It's a shame as I thought I got it at a great price. I guess going Prime doesn't give you any edge in situations like this.
Yeah i got mine maybe a week ago.
@blackfalcon53: Are you in Victoria or metro area? Did yours show up in any of the Auspost tracking?
@jeffui: Yeah Vic Metro. I think i added the tracking manually to the AusPost App, but it worked.
@blackfalcon53: Mine arrived maybe 2 weeks ago, I'm in Sydney Metro.
for $4 more can get a SanDisk Plus 2TB instead
