Advice on Choosing a Punching Bag

Hey gang, I'm 178cm / 75kg male, looking for a heavy punching bag for general fitness. Would really appreciate your thoughts and advice on choosing a bag.

I've found the following options, all 4ft/40kg bags, keen to hear your thoughts on them:

  1. Everlast Powercore Elite - $200 pickup
Cheapest of the lot and I can pick it up from store, so no delivery charges. 2.5 cm foam padding, Nylon Straps. Some of the reviews seem to indicate that the filling tends to settle at the bottom after a while – but is that the case for all punching bags?

  2. SMAI Punching Bag - $325 delivered
Australian brand, seems well reviewed and stocked in a few gyms. 2 cm of foam padding. 1000 denier vinyl outer, chain attachments.

  3. Fairtex HB5 - $330 delivered
Popular Muay Thai brand. Doesn't seem to have any padding indicated. Reinforced Nylon Straps. The filling is "hydraulically pressed", which I imagine might help reduce the chance of the filling settling at the bottom?

Which would you choose?

As always, open to any other recommendations and advice.

I'm not sure the state of play on the seconds market but these things are like a lot of gym equipment… People buy them when they're motivated and then it just sits there doing nothing.

So.. if it's for the interim Everlast will work.

If you're planning on some kicking I would suggest a 5-6ft bag.

Heavy bag to smash the crap out of it?

    EDIT
just saw reviews for the Everlast and the fill of it in some photos - I would avoid/

    • Hey, thanks for the reply!

Keeping an eye on Gumtree/eBay for any second hand deals in my area - nothing too good as of yet.

Still undecided about the length. Longer bags could be an option, from my understanding the trade off is less movement - which could be a plus depending on the type of workout. 5ft might be a good compromise?

    • Just saw your edit - you reckon the other bags won't suffer from the same issue?

One of the SMAI reviews had this picture which seems to show the fill settling at the bottom?

Most of these import bags are just private label.

As with all bags, you will need to take them down and throw them around a lil to get the filling smoothened out.

    • Thanks for your reply!

That's interesting - so the filling settling on the bottom is something that all bags will go through?

Do you think there's any advantage in going for the more expensive bags over the Everlast?

Yes. Everytime you hit the bag, the filling moves around and can only move in the direction of gravity.

Haven't had experience with those bags. Had a Jim Bradley. Definitely better than everlast but much more expensive. Still pools up at the bottom.

i've got a jim bradley too.
I occasionally through it on the the ground and do jiu jitsu exercises with it and toss it around.. kinda helps a bit.

@dasher86: I throw it on the ground and get a mate to help me reenact a backalley mugging.

I got the jumbo leather. After we stomp it out, we give it a sensual massage with moisturising oils.

@dasher86: $10 delivery aust wide too.
can't comment on the quality of them these days though.

I prefer a sheep or cattle carcass. Really strengthens the knuckes and goes great on the barby afterwards.

      • Like Rocky?

"The trainer taped my hands in such a fashion that I thought it would protect me against any broken bones while hitting the carcasses,” wrote Stallone in The Official Rocky Scrapbook. “But after eight hours, the cold penetrated the bandages and hitting the meat finally caused a cracked knuckle and drove it back into the middle of my hand. To this day, I still haven’t seen it. But again, it was worth it. Hell, I’ve still got nine other knuckles."

  • How do people hang the bags up; best place?

      Skyhooks?

      • That Jukebox in Siberia is definitely an option.

  • jv is a pretty good punching bag.

    • Most would say ex's pic?
