Got my free $100 USD Azure credit after singing up to Azure for Students account.

I now also have access to hundreds of free software keys apparently. Ended up installing Windows 10 Education for free. You can access the free keys by clicking on "More Services" in the portal, search "Education" then look for whatever you want to install. Absolutely worth it if you have an edu email.

Some additional info for Azure for Students from their FAQ

  • What happens after I use my $100 credit or I’m at the end of 12 months?

  • After you exhaust your available credit or reach the end of 12 months, your Azure subscription will be disabled. If you‘ve reached the end of your 12 months and are still a student, you‘ll be able to renew your Azure for Students offer. We’ll notify you shortly before your 12-month anniversary to let you know how to renew. If you’re no longer a student, you may upgrade to a Pay-As-You-Go subscription by contacting Azure Support.

  • Can I get Azure for Students again next year?

  • Yes. If you’re still a student, you may renew for another 100 USD Azure credit. We’ll send a notification when you’re eligible for renewal (up to 30 days before your anniversary of signing up). Simply re-validate your student account with us and you’ll be given additional Azure credit. Unused credit is non-transferable.

  • What are subscriptions, and how do they relate to Azure for Students?

  • Subscriptions provide access to Azure products. Azure for Students gives you 100 USD credit for 12 months and access to more than 25 free products, including compute, network, storage, and databases. Any charges incurred during this period are deducted from the credit. To continue using Azure at the end of 12 months or after you've exhausted your 100 USD credit, whichever occurs first, you must upgrade to a Pay-As-You-Go subscription by contacting Azure Support. After you provide a valid credit card, you remove the spending limit on the subscription and get access to the free products as part of your upgraded account.

  • What happens with the products if I don’t upgrade?

  • If you decide not to upgrade at the end of 12 months or after you’ve exhausted your 100 USD credit, whichever occurs first, any products you’ve deployed will be decommissioned and you won’t be able to access them. You can always come back within the next 90 days to upgrade your subscription.

  • How do I know how much of the $100 credit I have left?

  • You can see your remaining credit on the Microsoft Azure Sponsorships portal.

  • How do I download the Developer Tools

  • Your Azure for Students subscription will provide you with access to certain software developer tools available to download for free. You must have a current, active Azure for Students subscription to access the software developer tools. Once you have signed up with Azure for Students, you can download this software through the Education Hub.

  • What software is available to download

  • You can view the list of software developer tools available to download here.

  • What is Microsoft Learn?

  • Microsoft Learn is a free, online learning platform that allows you to learn Azure technologies at your own pace. Learning Paths combine modules that allow you to start with the basics, then move to advanced methods that address real-world challenges.

  • Can Azure for Students be used for production or only for development?

  • Azure for Students provides access to all Azure products expressly intended to support education or teaching, non-commercial research, or efforts to design, develop, test, and demonstrate software applications for the above purposes.

  • Can I apply any of my $100 credit toward Azure Marketplace offers?

  • No, you can’t apply your credit to Azure Marketplace offers. However, many Azure Marketplace partners offer free trials and/or free tier plans for their solutions.

Yup huge pain in the butt, Teams and 365 out all morning…which meant my stupid 365 cloud docs weren't syncing.

        • +4

Lolz yeah I read that….. Then someone touted it's a leap year so they were making sure it remained 365… Haha

    • +8

It has actually been a long running deal

    • Yep. Outlook didn't launch. Skype for Business failed to sync

    • +4

It’s ironic. When I logged on to Azure today I saw popup on top right hand corner indicating they have an outage. Just below that there was another popup asking me “how likely are you to recommend Microsoft Azure to a friend”.

Not the right time to ask that question Microsoft.

    • +1

Yeah free credit and exam vouchers bring it on!

    • this has existed for uni students for a long time

Got my free $100 USD Azure credit after singing up to Azure for Students account.

What do I have to sing to get credit?

  • I am not sure but I signup for a few customers a month ago, all have 100 credit.

  • Ahh so compared to Aws, what's this got that the free one doesn't.

Or even cloud flare, that those filthy scalpers use.

Free Windows 10 Education - unlimited free keys to activate windows. Equivalent to enterprise edition

      • Ahh to activate windows (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ get outta here

      • I think it only activates one time

        • +1

          Activated 5pcs so far ¯_(ツ)_/¯

They've renamed this program many times. Now they've called it Azure for Students to bring hype to their azure cloud service. It used to be called Dreamspark, and Microsoft Imagine.

    • It’s a rare project for Microsoft if the marketing people haven’t justified their existence by renaming it multiple times. Look at Lync (now Skype?), Office 365 now Microsoft 365, or geez I’m sure there’s heaps more. About the only ones that haven’t been renamed are the Microsoft Office applications and Microsoft Windows.

      • +4

Clippy being renamed as Cortana :D

Education keys are still available after the Azure credit expires if anyone's wondering

  • Students with edu email addresses should have things like Office for free as well, don't they? I know they have Adobe Creative Suite, etc. free through the dept of education portal.

  • Didn't it use to be $250?

    • Yeah. Through Dreamspark and MS Imagine. They've reduced their offerings by a bit.

  • +1

What use does this have for someone who has no I.T. Background?

    • I'm with you. What is Azure and why would someone want it?

    • +2

None really. Perhaps some online storage but you need to know what you are doing.

Is it correct that windows 10 education license is for life? Seems like the best version of 10.

    • Also need to know this! How do I get the licence?

    • +2

Yes! After you sign up and activate your account, click on "More Services" in the portal, search "Education" then search for Windows 10 Education. I installed mine last night.

    • -1

It's for life but unless it has a free 11 update, windows 10 loses all support after October 2025

      • i have windows 11 edu as well .. would that be for life also?
        2 versions ..

  • Windows 10 education keys aren't showing up for me? Only windows server editions

    • +1

Are you searching for it in the right place? Took me a while to find it as well.

Make sure you go to "More Services" in the portal, search "Education", click on "Software" then search for "Windows 10 Education". Should look like this

      • Yep I'm looking there and it doesn't show. How many items does it show when you don't have any search term? It says 17 items for me

        • +1

Yeah, same issue here - I have 17 items listed and no Windows 10 Education

      • Don't have it. I have windows 8 industry pro. Never heard it.

    • Do you have access to windows 8 keys? I'm pretty sure you can use those to activate win10

  • Microsoft Learn is free for all, no need for registration. With Edu email you can benefit from many discounts and promotions. I don't know why this isn't shared more. If you have such email use it at full.

    • +1

There should be page setup for this in Ozb "student deals"

What can one do with the $100 credit?

Can we use this to implement an app?

    • +1

      Would like to know too.

    • u could run a virtual machine

      • Thanks! What could one usually do with a VM?

        • +2

The same thing that once can do on a PC. It's just Virtual and in the cloud so you can conect to it from anywhere. Example: Work PC's & Servers could be Virtual and in turn staff connect to them from home using their own PCs. No actual office is required as its all hosted in the Cloud. Just a simple example only as there are many uses (but not for all).

        • If you have to ask then it's probably not for you..

        • Launch Skynet. On Linux.

My software list has no Windows, Office, or anything that I am familiar with. I wouldn't mind having a free Windows 10 Education license to use in the future. The closest is the "Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro".

  • can I leave a azure virtual machine running for the whole 12 months 24/7 or would I need to shut it down when not in use to ensure it doesn't use over $100 total?

    • Good question. It confused me when looking! I believe one gets 72 free "connected" hours per week. I would assume it remains on 24/7 but knows when you are connected. Will let others answer that more accurately if I am wrong.

      • i created and started one up today so will check my costing dashboard tomorrow to see how much it cost

        • confirmed it uses around $5 per 24 hours, so best to shut it down when not in use.

          • @FeZZa21: But is it hourly or daily rate i.e. what if one wanted it on for only 8 hours a day. How much then?

  • +1

    Cheers!

  • I used this a year ago for Windows 10 Licenses that worked fine. However on checking the site again today to see if there was any more software added, I found that all of the listed Windows 10 versions gave me a completely different keys to the ones I obtained last year (and yep I obtained a key from every single listed windows 10 version last year).

Ended up with a bunch of new software keys but haven't used the new keys yet.

Do account holders get a new software key for each item of software every year?

Does anyone know of a limit as to how many Windows keys a user could obtain or if the new keys will invalidate the ones I got last year?

    • Microsoft has moved on from making money on Windows licenses.

Once it's active it will stay active if you keep the same hardware. I don't think you get new key every year. You might generated the key when they used to be called dreams park.
When they moved away from dreamspark, it's 's easier and cheaper for them to start fresh and issue new licenses rather than importing old data.

      • Actually that is incorrect. Microsoft plays the long game now by bloating up the mainstream windows versions (Home, Pro, etc) so that older hardware starts lagging badly after the initial couple or so years.

This pushes users to purchase a newer laptop with higher specs every few years. Each new laptop = a new OEM Windows licence $$. More laptops that sell, more Microsoft makes from Windows. The more bloatware Microsoft pushes, the more laptops get sold.
