I agree. However, you can store half the tin and do the 2nd brew right after the first finishes. That is what I did before upgrading to a fermentasaurus. I also still have one of these new in the box as they are really handy when you want to do a sample size brew before you waste a lot of hops.
There's a lot of toucan (2-can) recipe's out there. You could do those with the single can in this fermenter quite easily. Storing half a can is just asking for an infection unless your cleaning and sanitizing is absolutely meticulous.
Not sure about infections, sugar content is so high, nothing much will grow in the undiluted stuff in the can, similar to jam…
@team teri: That's not the case at all. See plenty of infections on homebrewing forums/Facebook pages from improper storage etc. I've also seen mouldy jam (not mine thankfully).
@slimdealin: Have to disagree here. Mould is not an issue when brewing, bacteria are. They can't grow in high-sugar conditions.
Put some glad wrap over the open can right away and you'll be fine.
If you leave it open to the air for weeks that's a different story: you'll have more stuff settling on top, ready to start growing once it gets diluted down to more hospitable conditions.@team teri: Fair call, agree to disagree.
Botulism is also a thing.
I would also like to note, once the extract tins are open if not used within a few weeks the quality goes downhill.
Just use the whole tin, simple.
Good size for Mini Mash or more experimental brews. I might get one to brew some dark beers where you may not want 23L of it.
That's a great idea! If it turns out to be a fail then you're not wasting a full-size batch. Plus, you could easily get a couple of these on the go at the same time to double your experimentation.
LOL - I like how the description says it includes a 'durable hydrometer'. Geez…I so wish I could find a hydrometer that's made out of stainless steel or something, I hate to think how many of those things I've gone through over the years!
Yeah these ones are crap, have to be careful the bottom doesn't fall off and leave you with a mess to clean up.
Personally though I can't remember when I last used mine. I tend to ferment for atleast 2 weeks at the correct temp before bottling and its always fine by then. I'd personally only bother getting it out if there was no scum ring and/or decent sediment formed at the bottom.
So you take no readings? But how do you get to obsess over OG and FG and ABV and efficiency if you dont take readings :P
Yep I do the same. It's not like you're not going to drink it if it's a couple points off anyway
The consumables included are for an IPA style beer.
Good deal however beware this is a smaller kit compared to standard home brewing kits. I started with a kit this size and had to buy another full size kit so I could utilize more of the beer tins - and ultimately end up with 23L of beer instead of 8.5L
