SCA's recent 7 day deals are pretty mediocre!

Before all the "can I use this oil in my car" questions start, check this out for compatibility (because oils ain't oils):

    https://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/

    • +1

Can I use this compatibility for me car? :-)

  • +3

Great engine oil, been using it in my car for 11 years

    • +16

Yeah, but it’s not that good, you should be changing the oil in line with the manufacturer specs…
      I’ll show myself out

      • -1

I rotate this with 10-40 between winter and summer.

This oil is perfectly fine for my engine.

        • +3

your original comment made it look like you don't change your oil

    • +3

11 years!! Jeez… This should be changed every few months 😂😂😂

      • +3

        oh crap LOL

I understand what you guysmean now LOL!!

Sorry i meant I have been using this brand of oil with each oil change for the past 11 years.

      • +5

Now thats what I call a true ozbargainer 😀🤣

  • -1

I've never owned a car but do you guys salivate when you see these jugs of oil or something?

    • +3

More economical than buying a 5 litre tub of Vaseline.

    • +2

I can't quite explain the feeling of doing your own oil change and giving the car a wash. It's kind of like getting a new car kind of feeling. Saving 50% on oil makes all the sweeter.

      • Its all fun until the oil plug doesn’t screw itself back in and the leaking begins 😅

        • +1

For the love of god, please have spares when doing home oil changes. Spare oil filter, sump plugs, washers, and oil. The last thing you need is to do a job at 4:30pm only to find out that super cheap shuts in 30 minutes and your sump plug has stripped or rounded.

          • @t25: Yes was my first time doing so it was messy and I ended up running back to the shop few times to get the right tools. Finally managed to get it done. I’m sure next time will be easier.

        • +3

I've got these ball valve things instead of the sump plugs, the make the job so much easier and neater:

          https://www.ezoil.com.au/

          • +1

@Cheemeister: It’s like a fumoto valve. I’ve been contemplating one of these but i can’t justify buying one when I do an oil change once a year and my filter is the cartridge type which is pretty messy.

          • @Cheemeister: I am been thinking about getting one of these for sometime, just get worried about a leak happening due to accidental turn of the valve. Wonder if the design is secure enough to prevent something like this happen.

Yes I have read the details on the website where they do say that the design does not allow for this to happen.

What has been your experience so far? How long have you had it on the car?

            • @pauper: The lever is latched into a small recess. Opening the valves requires firstly a pull perpendicular to the moving direction of the lever before you could turn the lever.

I have had fumoto valves for 10+ yrs. Never had any accidental turn.

    • +4

Get a mechanic to do it and they'll take your car for six hours and charge you $150+. Or you can do it yourself in 45 minutes for under $50.

      • +1

That is if the mechanic's apprentice doesn't strip the sump thread during the process.

Having said that it's a necessary work for the apprentices to learn and that's important. Just prefer not having that on my cars

      • $100 saved, 10% of resale value lost.

        • +1

No chance, unless you drive a brand new car.

      • Why can't a shop just do oil changes for 80.

        • +2

Labour, insurance, workers compensation, environmental waste, years of training to be a mechanic, etc. And I haven't even added the profit margin to keep a business going ahead.

  • Wish they did deals like this for my motorcycle! I need 15W-60 as a single cylinder runs hot.

    • Carb needs a tune? One good thing from a hot engine is the radiant heat in the winter on the cold/wet rides!

      • Duke 390 2020 - that's how the engine runs - v.hot.

  • Good oil, good price.
    Thanks OP

  • would this be a good alternative to Castrol SRF? for track use

  • Awesome, my little 2003 rav3 runabout is nearly due, good timing

Tempted to put a thicker oil in as it's hitting 300k km, but it's not using any and doesnt miss a beat so probably stick with the 5-30

    • I’m actually in the same boat but with a corolla (200 tho), would you put Nulon 10-40 in it as next step?

      • There's also a Castrol edge 10-30

      • Had a problem with valves around 100k with our 2002 corolla a while back. The valves or something in the top of the motor gets clogged. Recommended to stay at 5w 30. Vvti also has a clogging issue with the piston rings.

        • Great intel hyaspty. What is the diagnosis/fix for this clogging issue?

          • @PasqualeOz: Link Problem with design of some models piston rings. Replace with fixed design or keep an eye on oil levels and top up. I recommend Toyota Nation if you want more info. Valve cleaners could also help.

            • @Cave Fire: Sent this to someone else having vvti issues. You can also pull the vvti control valve and oil control valve and clean. Overview

  • Just in time for my car service.
    Thanks OP.

  • I really wish Castrol would stock A5/B5 over here.

  • +1

Who else already has 20L of this stuff in the shed, but is considering buying more just because….?

    • +1

I have about 10L of this stuff Castrol Edge 5w-30 (5L x 2). Usually stock up about 10L for 2 cars - both drink 4.7L each (Camry ACV40). Usually they have a sale once every 4-5 months a year. Try not to under/over stock these days, if you under stock and need oil desperately, these things can cost up to $70 for 5L.

Tried Castrol Edge, HX7, HX8 and Nulon, prefer the HX8s but hardly on sale. Nulon was by far the worst.

      • How was nulon the worst? Did you pull your engine apart after each change to check for bearing wear?

        • No, but noticeably noisier and rougher at idle.

          • @willister:

            prefer the HX8s

What's did you like better about the HX8 in comparison to the edge?

  • +2

Wish they would put the the Penrite HPR5 on 50% off. And stock the 10tenths 5w30

  • -1

    Is this oil full synthetic?
    Doesn't seem to say anywhere

  • This versus the Penrite Full synthetic 5W-30, which is better?
Also, Penrite is Australian owned I believe.

    • -1

Castrol any day. I have tried both but the drive seems smoother and powerful with Castrol than with Penrite.

      • -2

Placebo, an identical spec oil would never make any discernible difference to the drive… Until your about to experience a bearing failure that is.

        • -2

          100% disagree with this statement.

  • I also use this as my chainsaw lube, works fantastic

  • This vs the recent NULON 5w30 deal, what do people think of Nulon vs Caltex?

I noticed the Nulon one was 6L which is better value.

    • I've been putting the Nulon 5W-30 into my LS3 V8 for the last 35000 km and haven't had any dramas yet. I was doing mostly highway driving so I also just stuck with the 15000km/9 month intervals.

  • The Supercheap website lists, Castrol EDGE Engine Oil 10W-30 5 litre, for $62.99 not $37.79. Is this what other people are seeing as well?

    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/castrol-castrol-edge-eng…

    • On sale in 2 days

  • +2

don't forget cashrewards / shopback when this sale starts. perfect timing as I need to do an oil change on my accord euro.

    • I have an accord euro too :)
This price is so good I want to try doing oil change myself.
Are the oil filters also on sales at times?

      • You should call your dealership and get the cost of genuine oil filter from the parts department. The genuine Honda and Toyota are not much more than Ryco in Brisbane.

      • I ordered a filter kit from ebay…

      • 20% Off Ryco currently… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/573529

  • +1

Worth mentioning that valvoline are still running their synpower promotion where you get $20 cash back via an eftpos gift card.

I usually wait for a synpower sale and 5L ends up costing ~$24 (with $20 cash back) depending on the oil.

  • Any idea why the Castrol Edge 5W-30-LL is not also on sale?

  • Purchased 2 x 10w30 and received the following as bonuses free with order:

Wheelies Bathurst Heroes & Legends Single
Retro Vintage Style Branded Tin Sign (Single Sign)

  • It keeps adding the bonus stuff which is unavailable at the store close to me! Shady

    • The bonus retro tin sign is approximately A4 in size and is definitely worth going to pickup from another store if you like these type of signs. The other bonus gift, wheelies, isn't anything special and I gave it to my 4 year old who lost interest in it within 2 minutes.

  • is there any mechanics can bring my own oil?

    • Mine does but it's a family friend. The oil I bring from this type of deal (typically Nulon) is cheaper than what he pays wholesale.

    • I used to take my oil to my dealer and they used my oil. Then switched to a private workshop and they do the same as well.

  • Do these oils have an expiry date? My car has just been serviced and the next one is sometime Mar '21 …

    • there's no specific shelf life - it depends on how you store it but 2-5 years to give you a rough estimate (I reckon towards the upper part of the range with fully synthetic oil)

  • Thanks everyone for the great tips. Stocked up on some for my car. Any tips on where I can get 15W-50 motorcycle oil (fully synth oe Ester) for a good price? Cheapest I could find was eBay at $65 Shell 4L Advance AX5 15W50

  • -1

That's not good just paid $16 for valvoline fully synthetic at repco and $15 for nulon semi synthetic at autobarn

    • I'd rather pay extra for the Castrol Edge.

      • There's really no difference

        • Knock yourself out then and go with what you want….
