External Door V Indoor Door for Soundproofing

We have a 13 year old learning to sing, and that's just say sometimes, it gets a bit off-key. I was thinking that by replacing the door with a solid door, it will help sound-proof the room. I noticed that the solid core doors listed in Bunnings are called External doors, however they are the same dimensions?
EG: Hume 2040 x 820 x 35

Is there any reason why External doors can't be used?

  • solid timber door. Put some seals all around

    • Of course. We have done this in the past with the glass sliding door.

  • If they've done a proper job double studding the door cavity, it'll be fine. If not, it may shift which will typically mean the edges may foul over time.

It's easier to just get some self adhesive sound deadener applied to the door, and use a weather shield on the floor edge.

    • That makes sense. More weight from the door, may cause it to shift etc.

    • If they've done a proper job double studding the door cavity

That's a big "if". I don't think I've ever seen that done on internal doors - more likely, it's just the door frame and a few offcuts where it's nailed to the wall studs.

      • Yeah, I'm redoing mine atm because they aint double studded.

Also, the doors are located in the stupidest places.

Wouldn't a singing coach be a better investment?

Thinking Australian Idol, first record, fame n fortune.

Post here if your 13 year old needs an agent or whatever… lol

    • Yes, she has a singing teacher. She has improved.

I already know a talent agent who worked for Sony Music. Thanks for the advice. ;)

I knew a guy who managed a band in Newcastle called Aspect in the mid to late 80s, however he dumped them when they wanted to be Rockstars. They had a lineup change about this time, and the rest is history.

Also be aware that if you do get a solid door you'll probably need at least 3 hinges as you probably only have two on the hollow door.

    • Yep, just had my doors replaced with solid MDF.
Needed an extra hinge for the weight.

Wouldn't ear muffs for you or a gag for the 13 year old be cheaper?

    External door = water resistance
Spend the money on soundproofing foam and fit it to the inside of the door. It will be heaps cheaper and easier.

  • I have solid doors throughout my house.

Noise still gets through, perhaps a little less than if they were hollow, but noise will still transfer via plasterboard and gaps under the door.

I wouldn't bother changing the door, try the other suggestions first.
