Why don't you tell us your side of the story? We can give you some feedback about your experience and if a bad review is warranted.

    • +12

Basically got repairs at their shop.

When going to pick up got told the one of the dash board lights was on.

Was told its just one of those things that happen. They are ordering a part can you return the car another time.

      Agreed.

      They couldnt fix the issue.

      Told go to a dealer.

Dealer fixed the issue. Told me fault could only have occurred from repair the other dealer did.

Basically they screwed up, tried to fix it, didn't fix it. Now rejecting all contact.

      • But did you pay the mechanic?

      • +6

What was the actual issue? What was the light?

        • +2

It WAS the light. LED needed to be replaced /s

      • +1

        What was the dashboard light?

      • +22

Dealer fixed the issue. Told me fault could only have occurred from repair the other dealer did.

The dealer could be spinning you a line so you don’t go back to the mechanic and do come back to them.

If you don’t know about cars, and appear like you don’t know about cars, it is quite likely you’ve been spun a line by both parties. Unfortunately it’s common in the industry.

It does sound like the original mechanic screwed up though.

Just tell the truth in your review. Don't make anything up

  • +64

Just post your story of events and leave it at that. Don't try and persuade other people to not go, just detail your experience and let them decide based on that. Make sure you post the whole truth without any unnecessary insults or demands. Be polite, grammatically correct and genuine and if someone reads your review they will have respect for it and make up their own mind about whether or not to use that mechanic..

Seeing a 1 star review saying "bad mechanic avoid" doesn't really fill me with confidence that the person is equipped to judge a business.

    • +11

Seeing a 1 star review saying "bad mechanic avoid" doesn't really fill me with confidence that the person is equipped to judge a business.

Totally agree on that. Google, Trip advisor, Zomato are full of those types of "reviews"…

      • +1

Yup, usually these reviews are followed by an emotional outburst that reflects poorly on the reviewer. I just want the facts.

      • ebay seller review with generic reviews as well…

    • ^ +1 This is exactly the kind of reviews I mentally filter out when using reviews to weight into my decision.

  • Perhaps let us know what the issue was, maybe it's not as clear cut as you think. If it is, leave the star rating you think is appropriate, and an honest account of why.

  • +1

Be honest in detailing his shortcomings as you see them. Readers will make their own judgement based on your comments

  • +26
    • Be factual, don't be emotional.
    • Keep it concise and don't rattle on.
    • Stick to the valid points and don't get into name calling.
    • Make sure you have proof or what you are saying is verifiable.
    • Don't swear or use derogatory remarks.
    • Bad reviews should be used as a last resort, as it often burns bridges, it should not be used as a lever to "get your way".

I recently left a bad review on a service that had nothing but 5 star reviews from people that had only made 1~5 reviews (obvious fake reviewers) and I got a reply from the owner yelling and ranting about suing me for defamation and how they will get Google involved to delete my account (I'm a level 7 on Google reviews with about 1,000 reviews and photos that have almost 1 million views each.) because I was lying. I answered their response with the proof. I am yet to be contacted by their lawyers or by Google.

    • +15

      Level 7 reviewer…lol.

      • +11

How sad is that… :( It’s more of a time wasting thing I do when I am somewhere and waiting. I’ll just log into their google page and leave a review… I suppose I could play Candy Crush Saga or Kwazy Kupkakes instead?

I was only looking over my profile for unrelated reasons and was checking out my photos, and I have half my photos at just under 1 million views each… And for weird shit I thought would never get viewed.

And the addition of the comment on my reviewer level was to differentiate me from the 1 or 2 review fake accounts and that Google isn’t to just about to shutter my account over making a one star review.

        • Hitting someone with the 1 star that deserves it, worth it!!!!

On the very rare occasion I have a shocking experience somewhere that truly deserves a 1 star review I wish I had a legitimate looking google account

          • +1

@justjack: Oh, I agree, I will slam down a 1 star where it is warranted, but it's usually when all other avenues to solve the issue have broken down.

Also, something that I consider as a non-repairable interaction or experience is as soon and any staff member becomes rude, aggressive or demanding. Then it becomes a "Don't bother and enjoy your new review"

            • +2

@pegaxs: I give one star for jackasses who park their cars with no boat trailer, in the boat trailer parking bays. Pricks.

              • +4

@brendanm: 100%… If I see a company car doing the wrong thing, it's a photo and attached to a review. Bastard parking, parking in disabled spot or general illegal parking gets called out.

I like it when I get replies of "Are you sure it was one of our vehicles?" Well, the sign writing on the side kind of gives it away… Or "Our technician was not in that area at the time you are saying" Ahhhh… But your sign written van is saying otherwise…

                • @pegaxs: It's quite amazing that people in signwritten vehicles blatantly do the wrong thing in these days of Google reviews etc.

The photos are a good idea 👍

                  • +4

@brendanm: I had one where I had dash cam footage of their driver doing a U-turn over double lines. Car is at 90 degrees, sign work clearly visible. Posted that along with a "Please retrain your drivers in road rules. Please see…." and quoted off the relevant road rules. Their claim was it was in for a service and not their driver… I just replied " You get all your cars serviced 200km from the office?"

            • @pegaxs: In a restaurant if the food was amazing but the waiter was rude, you wouldn't give a 1 star would you? Maybe a 3 with an explanation?

              • +2

@bmerigan: Oh, absolutely. To me, every place starts as a 5 star. I wouldn’t can a place over the actions of one arsehole. It’s usually lost over a series of expectations/experiences.

And yes, I would always mention the best parts to try and balance out a review. Everyone’s expertise could be different. No point 1 staring a place if the food and atmosphere was amazing, but one staff member was an arsehat.

  • +3

Just go straight to the actual facts. Be fair and reasons in your review on the issues.

Check out this review of Dumpling King - Canberra City on Google Maps
    https://goo.gl/maps/55HbqfYKi14iWjU68

There's always 2 sides to the story. Our Canberrascooter friend was found to be unreasonable with his review.

    • +6

Wow… look at his avatar on Google… Might explain the attitude.

But yes, a classic example of what not to leave as a review. The guy is pretty much a petty review bomber by looking over their other reviews.

      • I went to a recommend mechanic and just had an appalling unprofessional dealing. Guy started bagging other mechanics I used before. Then managed to forget some tyre caps. Only realised days after. He found them. Had to go half way around town on Sat to pick them up. 1 missing. So had to buy a full set. Tool left in engine bay. Didn't test drive car after service. I know as had dash cam. Said he had courtesy car. It was his filthy work car. Then I thought the bill seemed very high. Since then maybe just coincidence after about 8months I have a squeaking noise in engine bay. Most belts replaced 2 years prior by another mechanic, but he did another alternator belt. Put a post on enthusiast website where I got the recommendation. He actual goes to that site but no reply. I was fair thought service itself was ok, but noted the issues.

        • +2

Tool in exchange for 4 tyre valve caps, win! Even if it is only a screw driver. If you got really lucky, it will be a 10mm socket.

          • @DashCam AKA Rolts: I did end my post saying this is my experience. And this was in the same thread as the recommendations. Obviously some had a better experience. The mechanic knew I was a new customer and was referred. Would have thought it would be a good experience. He even slotted me in as had a cancelled booking, so appreciated at the time. Will never go back or recommend. I think he is just busy with regulars and just happy to plug away. I also know that the apprentice did most of the work hence my concern over the quality and his overview of those works to a standard.

      • -2

What is your issue with his avatar?

        • Well, nothing if that user is a white supremacist. From the small section of the avatar that can be seen, it seems that it is an altered version of the old imperial German flag.

This is the flag that has been appropriated and is often substituted for just an outright Nazi flag. Unfortunately, I cannot see the whole avatar, but I‘m nearly sure as shit it has a swastika in the upper right corner in the red.

Or, I don’t know, he may just be a proud 120yo German.

          • -2

@pegaxs: So without any evidence at all you label him this dude a nazi….. go have a lie down Karen.

            • @moggott: Without any evidence? The guy is literally sporting an avatar that is of a flag that has been appropriated by neo-Nazi and white supremacists. This is the old German war ensign flag from the first world war. The flag even has restricted usage in its home country.

Postwar use within the United States

In the United States, conversely, American-founded white supremacist groups like the Ku Klux Klan have used the Reichskriegsfahne side-by-side with the Confederate "battle flag" at their gatherings at times.

How much more evidence do you need? Here is the user. Feel free to get in contact with them and ask them why they are using a flag as their avatar that is considered an offence in its home country and associated with neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups everywhere else in the world.

But, like I said, the guy may just well be a 120yo German.

              • @pegaxs: And like I said you have zero evidence and yet scream nazi! Are all christians nazis because they had "gott mit uns" on their uniforms?

Seems you need a stiff drink rather than a lie down Karen.

                • +1

                  @moggott: "YoU'vE GoT ZeRo eViDeNcE!!!1!!!!1"

                  "BuT yOu HaVe No eViDeNcE!!!1!!!1!"

"YoU NeeD ToO LiE DoWn, KaReN."

                  Whistle blows

                  So many logical fallacies.
Evidence was provided and is easily Googled. You have provided NONE to counter.
Christians have nothing to do with this, it's like saying "Hiltler spoke German, so, my grand parents are neo-Nazi because they speak German."
And finally, when you cant back your side of the conversation, you yell and get down to name calling. Well played. So hard to counter being called a "Karen".

Unless you can come up with something better than "no I'm not, YOU ARE" and provide your own proof that the flag on OP's avatar is NOT a symbol of neo-Nazi and white supremacists, and stop the name calling, I'll happily indulge you. Until then…

The person who left that review seems to be the type that only leaves negative reviews. Looking through their post history they are very rarely satisfied.

That's the problem with a review system though. Often satisfied customers won't leave reviews but all it takes is one or two people to have a bad experience (or be a Karen) and the business is forever tainted by the 1%.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/561072

Reminds me of this dude….likely the same guy.

      • +7

100% it's the same guy. Both the post and the review are nearly word for word verbatim.

      • +1

Exactly! Posting in OZB came into my mind after reading the review.

      • +2

Yes Canberrascooter.. Thrown in penalty box with last post.

      • I totally agree with his complaint. I order what I want, and I expect the business to package that in the most beneficial way to me.
If I find that they didn't, I'll go back and ask for a refund of the difference. If it's totally inconvenient and takes ages, I consider I've just provided some training in customer service. Get it right in the first place and you'll save yourself a heap of grief, and have happy customers.

When he ordered the extra dumplings, the waitress' response should immediately have been "oh then you could get this deal". This is really basic customer service.
I guess there is a negative side to having a culture of not tipping.

        • Nothing to do with the waitress it is, probably, how the order is put into the system. It is, probably, worth asking the waitress if modifications are possible but any issues should be taken up with the management, not with the waitress. You’ve, obviously, never been to the States; you are expected to tip no matter how bad the service, the only difference is if you give a very large tip, or not.

          • @try2bhelpful: obviously?

I didn't say I was a in favour of tipping, but Australian service standards are abysmal

            • -1

@SlickMick: I find most servers do a great job. Sure, they are occasionally a bit grumpy or screw up but going in with the attitude that your server is going to be abysmal isn’t a great start to an interaction. Servers aren’t there to bow to your every demand. They are your equal - a person doing a job.

the American tip model doesn’t seem better. Abysmal wages and ransomed into ‘performing’ for the customer to get a tip that is virtually compulsory anyway. Their culture doesn’t appear to respect servers.

Sure, theres probably a balance in between there, but being proud of your job, getting a decent wage and being treated with respect as a customer and a server goes a long way to not needing a tip culture.

        • @SlickMick Why would they want to direct you to the discounted meal. Again why is it always the other person's responsibility. If you go into a shop. 1. You look at the menu. 2. You may look up specials. 3 If no specials you might ask if there are any specials. I doubt Scooter did 2 or 3. So he has made the order then realised oh sht. I should change it. Sure the waiter could have given option. But hey I believe in what comes around goes around. Scooter had it coming.

    • that "B" reviewer from that link is a serial pest.

Normally guys who don't have enough real balls to get anywhere in life and spend time writing reviews to make themselves feel important.

  • +5

The google metric will put lower reviews to the bottom
they show "most relevant" by default and this will push the 5 star ones to the top.
They also can reply to your review and can make you look like simply a disgruntled customer

    • +2

"We tried to contact you but you are not on our records. I hope you manage to contact the mechanic you are looking for."

  • +5

It would seem the crux of your problem comes from the dealer making a statement pushing you down the hole of suspicion. But have thought about whether the dealer is even correct? I've never met a dealer mechanic ever telling me the right information when you start going beyond their training scripts.

    • Unless OP has it in writing from the dealer would omit.

Just write the fact. Dash board light was unable to be fixed and was referred to dealer.

    • +1

Remember the original mechanic tried to repair the fault, and said it was just a random event.

Unless the dealer is also lying, the work they did was not just a light reset.

  • +3

people that leave reviews like "horrible food, waited 3 hours" 5*****… why!?

    • +5

Or the other way… "Loved the staff. Great location. Fantastic atmosphere…" 1*

      • But the food was crap. Conveniently omitted.

        Like HealthEngine

        • +1

HealthEngine and white coat etc is crap unless you are choosing your doctor based on manners and size of flat screen in the waiting room.

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: "Waiting room was cramped and hot. Receptionist was rude and condescending. Doctor had cold hands and was indifferent…. But have you seen the 82" OLED TV and the 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound they have in their waiting room? Ellen was so crisp and clear, and so life sized. It made me feel like I was there… 5 Stars!"

            • +4

              @pegaxs: 5 star - My dog lived! :D

              1 star - My dog died. :(

3 star - My dog is now a turtle. :S

  • +4

Lol dashboard lights. happens all the time.

i wouldn't get too worked up over it. it will be a trigger error caused by their work, unfortunately the dealers have the proper software to reset it the private mechanics do not.

the mechanic probably did cause it, but they would have no way of knowing that that would happen. it would have cost the dealer 1 min of their time to fix it and they charged you $200.

I've had a check engine light on my Mercedes on since changing an air charger pipe. just can't be bothered, if you are getting worked up over writing a review - probably don't write it and stop drinking your own poison.

    • +1

i wouldn't get too worked up over it. it will be a trigger error caused by their work, unfortunately the dealers have the proper software to reset it the private mechanics do not.

Specialists would have spent money on the software to reset the error codes. Potentially mechanic in question is not a specialist in the brand serviced.

      • True and possibly irrelevant to discussion.

      • just out of interest you should look up right to repair.

something should not cease to work or be reduced in capacity just because although mechanically fine, it requires a certain piece of software to make 100% good again.

their software is lousy to begin with, which is why companies like tesla (i don't like them) roll out the majority of updates for free. remember the time when internet used to be charged for every 1mb you used to go over?

i was talking to our corporate mechanic and he says private mechanics are in an extremely bad position at the moment as parts become more complex and more things rely on software. it means, training wise, it is now 10x the amount of work to fix cars. you can't possibly go through training to fix every model out there, for every year on every make. talking about e.g. mercedes alone, you would need to be able to repair 100+ different models.

  • +5

    Stick to the facts.

leave out the emotional rubbish such as:

    pregnancy
    baby
    wooden leg
    perceived importance of your time
    children
    blah blah blah

    • +1 for "wooden leg".
Bonus if you had included parrot and eye patch.

    • +7

But what if you only bought it for the roof racks?

  • +1

Never be afraid of the truth! But as they say above stay to the facts. Some cars have secret "traps" so only the dealer can reset a light. And remember just like some explained google has a long term commercial interest so heavy advertisers get the "good" light they pay for!

    • Never be afraid of the truth!

Terrible advice for children. People ruin other people's lives for having the truth told about them every day, between 7 billion people it must happen every day somewhere in the world at least once. "Never be afraid of telling the truth after carefully considering the possible outcomes from doing so" might be better advice.

  • +1

    Do it!
Start with "WARNING WARNING"… then provide your experience with the mechanic.

My car has been mechanically fantastic… but on the odd occasion I've had to consult a mechanic… they look at the badge, then either jack up the price or blatantly say they are too busy.

They will rip you off bc they think you have no idea.

    WARNING WARNING

  • +1

What did the dealer do to rectify the fault? Exactly what did the dealer invoice you for?
If a canbus problem then the computer has turned off your light. If something was dislodged or broken politely approach the mechanic, they should have public liability insurance.
For what reason did the car go to the mechanic in the first instance?
If you leave feedback that is malicious you do open yourself to a lawsuit.
A rating of 4.6 does indicate a happy Google business, you should know that. Always 2 sides to a coin.
Lights and lamps are consumables, from experience they can last from 5 seconds to many years.

  • +1

Mechanic shops don’t have the same diagnostic gear that a dealer/manufacturer of the vehicle do. He would have tried his best but most times they will warn you that the repair they are attempting might not fix the error light. Move on and find a new mechanic if you don’t trust them anymore.

    • What's the reason for ignoring OPs attempts to talk to him though. If he's not accountable for what he did to the car, then who is?

  • My mechanic damaged all my car rims replacing the tyres, they looked brand new, not a scratch and now the edges are chipped and there's a gash on one of them

    • I was sure a tyre business damaged my wheels also, and we came to a compromise since I had no real evidence.

I had had all four tyres replaced by them and when I got home (a two minute drive) two were almost flat. I called them up and they said bring the car in. I swapped in two spares to get there and they found two long cracks which had appeared on each rim. They sold me a set of 4 new wheels at cost price.

      • … and finally got rid of those two ‘new’ cracked rims and sold you your existing rims at ‘cost price’?

        • No, it wasn't a scam. It was all very stressful for everyone involved and they sold me factory OEM FPV wheels at a fraction of dealer price.

          • @TransportPosters: Lucky, I wish I confronted my the mechanic about it. Everytime I see them I feel so frustrated.
