Waitress refused to change my order even though I am just order more of the same thing

I went to this restaurant today at lunch time at 1.10 pm , I was served by a waitress. I ordered 12 pork and prawn dumplings for $13.80 and some other dishes.

They have opening special price of 10 dumplings for $8.

After my food was served, I asked if I can get another 8 pork and prawn dumplings, so that I can get 20 dumpling for $16 instead of 12 dumpling for $13.80, taking advantage of the special price.

This is a pretty reasonable request, I was not asking for a refund or cancelling, I am buying additional food.

But the girl waitress, did everything in her power to deny me that request. She said she can not do that because she has already put the order into the system, that she has no way to modify my order once it has been entered into their system, I asked her if there is anyone in the restaurant that can help her to change my order, she said no, she would have to call her boss and it would be all much hassle to just save me a few bucks, literally her words. I was absolutely horrified at that comment and decided not to pursue my request and finish the meal and not come back as a return customer, apparently as a first time customer, I am a hassle and annoyance instead of a customer to her and I am apparently not worth her time and effort.

I have never been to any restaurant where once the order is in the system, it can not be changed or overridden by anyone in the restaurant.

She suggested I make another order of 10 dumpling for $8, instead of 8 dumpling for additional $2.20 ($8x2-$13.80) as I requested. She made no attempts to ask her colleagues or her superior if there is a way to modify my order or any way to help me. Pretty much just get your business with as least amount of service/effort as possible.

For those work in restaurant, is it true that once a order is in the system, before customer pay, waitress can't update the order?

It's like buying a big mac, then going back later asking for small fries and drink and expecting them to make it into a meal.

    Waitress did the right thing.

      • +35

Regardless, you got what you ordered.

Next time order more carefully. Don't just order different items at different times then expect them to group your orders together for the lowest price.

        roder! thats a new word

      • liking for "roder"

      • I have no idea why everyone is against you. To me that's poor service and she should have said something to you about that deal when you ordered. Even more poor service to say anything is a hassle to do with you. Obviously customer service is gone these days, you barely get a smile anywhere and most of the time they do as little as possible to help. Girls in those places are either family of the owner or barely trained in any aspect of the job. You can't expect much other than getting a plate of food in front of you (if you're lucky)

        • Can we assume that the employee said no sometime during the conversation? If they did then that should have been the end of it.

          • @whooah1979: Before that she should have said about the dumpling special when he ordered his. Crazy that a waitress wouldn't mention the special that the customer is ordering the same food of. My point is that customer service is completely gone. 99% of the time customers don't complain or cause a fuss they just don't come back, so restaurants don't know why they're losing business as it's not seen by owners or mangers most of the time. She should have spoken to the manager. Considering these times if you were the owner / manager wouldn't you let him have that difference? I know I would.

            • @Whisper Quiet: The customer already knew about the opening special, but instead chose another dish.

They then changed their mind after their dish was served and made scene for not getting their way.

The shop doesn’t need pita customers that have a history of throwing tantrums.

              • @whooah1979: He didn't say that. He's ordering extra from the original order to get a discount. Like I said to keep a customer happy and coming back I don't know too many restaurants that wouldn't do that to save two dollars. Waitress should definitely speak to a manager about anything like that before saying no

    • +1

Depends if he paid up front or not.

It could be a bit more like ordering a big mac, but then before you paid saying hang on change that to a combo.

Either way another example of terrible customer service.

Irritate a paying customer over essentially nothing. Great plan.

  • +7

    Really?

there is no such item as 8 dumplings in the system , so how could the chef know you need 8 dumplings instead of 10? so you want them to eat the extra 2 dumpling before serving them to you?

it is your responsibility to order from the menu, did any one push you to order?
It will be 100% reasonable to order extra 10 dumpling to avg out your cost but what you have ask for is unreasonable, not to say it is a Chinese restaurant or not.

    once again really??

      • +6

sometimes it is just easy said than done.

if people question your profession as too easy and why you get pay so much, what will you say?

No point to get mad, just vote by your foot and never go back if you are not happy.

            @canberrascooter:

If it is that hard, maybe they need a new system.

I think they are implementing that new system.

It's called not bending over backwards for entitled customers.

            Mic drop

              • @canberrascooter: Lol, if she was busy with multiple people all day it likely is a hassle, also remember your not from the same ethnic background, what you find rude might not be to them… your the kind of person who gets penis wiped dumplings…

              • +5

                @canberrascooter:

Was simply asking to modify my order.

No, you were asking for a cheaper price.

    TLDR version

    OP made an order.

    OP's order was fulfilled.

OP wants to change a completed order to be part of a different order to their advantage at the expense of time, effort and profit to the business. OP is upset they declined.

    • +1

      thanks for that.
OP doesnt seem to understand a food place Point of Sale.

        Their business is customer service

Every business revolves around serving the customer. That's pretty obvious.

A restaurant business is serving food that is ordered. It sounds like they did.

My partner and I paid more than $50 for <$10 worth of dumplings.

I hope your review has more truth than that statement, if not I wish the business all the best with their response to libelous reviews.

You're the dude who whinges constantly about parcel depots, KFC not being hot or spicy enough, recruiters, volunteering, etc. If I was that restaurant, I'd be happy to lose your business.

        • Maybe the dumplings weren’t spicy enough so OP needed more.

        • Jess right kfc hot and spicy us none of those the things it's named after

      • Did you leave your real name when you left your positive feedback.

  • +3

You cant change the order once the order has been fulfilled. You are tough out of luck, next time take more time to consider exactly what you want before actually making the order.

    • -6

Really? Is restaurant ordering system that inflexible? If I am changing to a different dish, I can totally understand if she refuse my request, I was order more of the exact same item.

      • +3

well the chef made you 12 dumblings correct?
the chef doesnt have 8 dumplings on the menu
        just 12 or 10, NOT 8.
why didnt you see the deal before you ordered?
i the fault is your own for not seeing the deal.
also the time you have wasted posting this issue and probably all the other actions you have done overwrite the price saving

  • +1

There was one time I order something from a restaurant which the second later I found something else I like then they said they can't change the order - I understand and I have moved on the second later.

    • I moved on too. I didn't pursue it further. Just wanted to know if restaurant system are like this. They once it is in the system, it can't be changed before a customer pays? like really.

      • +2

I wonder what you can pursue further? By writing on here?

If you have money go and talk to the owner and offer them a new system or perhaps buy the restaurant and give the waitress a lesson.

        • -2

Because I want to know if it was the system or if she lied to me.

I still don't believe my request was out of line. I was ordering more of the same food before I paid for them! That's going to a business, instead of buying 12, I want to buy 20 before they have a special price for 20 before I paid for any of them. What kind of business would say nah you can't that, you have buy paid for the 12 now.

      • +1

You haven't moved on, you have posted on this forum.

You have then posted a negative review despite multiple people on this forum telling you that you're wrong. Someone's livelihood is being compromised because you are so entitled. I am inclined to believe you are a lonely person and a bane to Canberra.

You seem like a shocking customer to have and I find it hard to believe that all these business' have done YOU wrong; I am inclined to think the opposite applies.

  • +5

    girl waitress

Sure it wasn't a a guy waitress or a girl waiter?

    • +1

Yeah, that struck me too. What does the gender of the waitperson have to do with this?

The system might be setup to ensure orders can’t be changed, once they are in the system, to avoid fraud. If OP left them a two star review because he stuffed up when ordering that is pretty petty.

  • +5

I envy people who can still go to restaurants…

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: No, I just want to know if anyone who work in restaurant know if what I asked was too much? Is it really that hard to change the order in restaurant?

            • @canberrascooter: I'm guessing it's possible, but she refused on principle; it's sort of like places that won't let you modify the menu or split bills. It's not hard if it was for one person/table, but if it happened all day for heaps of tables, then yeah it add up. Eg perhaps you were the 10th table to ask.

            • +1

              @canberrascooter: You are right.

The Chef's job is to fulfil orders that come through the system, hence the 12 dumplings. Basically, they fulfil what's on paper.

From the waitresses perspective, most would prefer not to put in special requests to Chefs as you risk becoming annoying.

So general rule of thumb, if everyone decides to put in a special request, then how can the kitchen function properly. Hence most special requests are denied.

On that note, you also need to understand most those Chinese Chefs are pretty fired up people and on a bad day, no body wants to piss off a fired up Chef.

              • -1

@ramb9: I worked in hospitality before for a large hotel. Special request comes in all the time, we are happy to change customer's order and our goal is to get customer to come back.

I would never said what she said to me to a customer.

That is " your request is too much effort just to save few dollars"

                • +2

                  @canberrascooter: That's probably the difference.

In a Large Hotel, every job has a proper function and they support each other for customer service.

In smaller Chinese restaurants, the Chef is basically like the say-all.

The restaurants can dispose of anyone in the business except the main chefs. Hence Chefs have a lot more power. And no one wants to piss the Chefs off.
