Did RTX 2080 Ti Owners Get Screwed by Nvidia Again?

Well guys, 3080 reviews are out. Overall, looks like around a ~30% improvement over 2080 Ti FPS, on average, at 1440p, and around ~40% at 4K (which is a much less popular resolution FWIW).

With prices coming in at around $1600 from early reports (which I predicted in numerous comments, but only to be shot down by the hype train - e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/9252533/redir, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/9265297/redir), did 2080 Ti owners just get screwed again?

Screwed when selling 2080 Ti's for $800 - $900 on eBay/Gumtree, now screwed again paying $1600 for only a mere ~30% uplift in performance. Looks like the real winners are those who picked up 2080 Ti's for $800 - $900 on eBay two weeks ago. Happily gaming now whilst the old owners got sucked in by Nvidia again. Remember "double the 2080 Ti's performance" anyone?

I'm pretty sure that the Ti range was never a good buy, price vs performance, at any point in time?

Edit: And it was "Double the 2080", not Ti

Which is completely bogus as well, though.

Sure is, but just correcting your post

Wait till benchmark showing more games perform better on 2080Ti than 3070 , that would be absolute ass rape

    No.

It's just how it works out with tech and early adopters.

I agree progress is good, but I think you miss my point, which is that a lot of Nvidia's early claims did not hold true, and arguably the long delay between their announcement and review embargo meant that they knew this.

Basically IMO, they overhyped the 3070 and 3080 to the point where 2080 Ti owners preemptively sold their 2080 Ti's for fire sale prices (which I suggested everyone go buy at $800 - $900), and now those 2080 Ti owners are put in a position where they're going to have to pay much more for nowhere near the performance gain they were supposedly promised.

    • "up to double the 2080 performance"

Seems a little early to be jumping to conclusions. We've still got no real confirmation of RTX3080s prices (other than Founders Edition). I suspect a markup though, especially initially when demand is high. As for 2080 Ti owners, they probably shouldn't have jumped the gun with possible shortages and no real benchmarks given only the vague "up to 2x 2080" performance

  • They said it will be significantly faster than the 2080ti, and double the performance was vs the 2080 which are the identical price point on release.

  • I also said the same as you, The performance gains are good but not great seeing as the price has dropped it makes it better. Now how long will the prices stay at RRP? People in The USA are selling these at 1200USD already which makes the price to performance suck compared to a cheap 2080Ti.

AMD won't have cards out for a while yet so Nvidia can price gouge as much as they want for the time being which they will gladly do. Add to this apparently Nvidia is not receiving good yields from the custom 8nm fab so they are limiting production to try and get better results before before they run full scale production.

  • Some delusional guy here gonna claim future games and driver optimizations will gap up to 2x performance, just because the bollocks 2x cuda cores = 2x performance

Just wait, future games and driver optimizations will gap up to 2x performance because 2x cuda cores = 2x performance

They screwed themselves by selling their shit before the new cards even came out out, not sure what Nvidia had to do with anything.

    RTX 3080 FE available on 17th September @11pm - $1139

    Thats the premuim model

So you can spend $1000 on a 3080

Or buy a used 2080ti for $900 for 35% less performance

    Who's getting screwed?

    • $1k for a 3080 AIB? Tell him he's dreaming

Seriously though, expect $1.2k+ for the cheapest AIB

      • -2

The Founders edition is literally 1139. What are you talking about?

        • +4

Love how hopeful you are with your mwave raffle ticket, good luck with the draw

        • AIBs will cost more than the FE. The FE is not "the premium model", it's the cheapest.

  • How can they have screwed you? You bought the card of your own free choice and it did what you expected it to do. You don't 'have' to buy their latest offering either. Or were you buying 2080Ti's as a long term investment?

  • +1

Only screwed if you jumped the gun. Remember the only proof of performance you had was a controlled digital foundry video designed to showcase the best outcomes for the 3080

Anyone who picked up a 2080ti for <$800 got a bargain IMO.

  • I'm waiting for a new wave of memes about the people that sold their 2080ti for $500 in the US and the people that keep telling other to wait since the 3000s are absolutely more superior and better value

It is really good for productivity though

  • I personally think a (USED!!!) 2080TI for $700-800 is a fair price. Would not pay more for them. 30% imrovment is massive in my opinion for new generation. And when you think that a new 3080 goes for $1,200-1,400 a TI should be $1,000 (there were the first deals already) … so a used one for 700-800 (or even less sounds fine to me). No warranty, risk of buying a defective card, …

The first 2080 super cards are new for $800 and the 2070super for around $600. So makes all sense.

I guess we overstate really the demand for the new 3080. Yes it will sell out. But you don't need to buy this when you don't want to play in 4K. No benefits. The TI went down in price - and right so - but it is still a perfectly capeable card (it was just overpriced as the 3090 is now - you always pay at least 50% more for the last 10% in performance). As the Ti is now "mainstream" it drops in price unproportionally as it is no longer the top tier card.

I guess we will see another drop in price for 2070/2080super soon when the 3070 comes out mid October. And maybe some great deals popping up earlier.

This was my take of all the reviews.

  • The disappointing part about the 3080 so far is the lack of OC headroom. 3.9% on founders- not good. Prev founders was 12%. Check out Gamersnexus review- best one i've seen. Compares stock vs stock and OC vs OC 2080ti - 3080.

OC VS OC and the margins are more like 20%…. Anyhow, 2080ti owners upgrade path is the 3090 at this stage which is +300USD on the 2080ti which is pretty rough.

Additionally anyone still believe NVIDIA's 3070 performance claims after seeing the 3080 review?

3070 might match 2080ti performance in quake 2 rtx , thats about it

Less vram and the cards will prob be 1k AUD.. those cheap 2080ti's are looking pretty good if you can still buy one

Hoping I win the 3090 FE raffle myself

    • Yep. 3070 might match just the 2080ti (with lots of benefits for the ti). So as the Ti goes for 999$ at the moment new (cheapest I found) why would a used one be more than $700? Prices will still go down further over the next 2 months. We paid far too much in the last year for these cards.

      • Guess it depends on the model of 2080ti. 700-800 for a low-end model does actually sound about right.
MSI Gaming/Aorus extreme/Asus Strix good for 900-1k IMO.

  • You only got screwed if you panic sold your 2080 ti cheap.

I panic sold my 2080 ti for a good price luckily or I'd be in the same boat of sadness

  • If people are getting screwed by nvidia "again" then they obviously haven't learnt their lesson and continue to fall for marketing hype.
As with all tech and games, you need to be patient and wait for real world reviews instead of preorder hype.

  • I mean if you are the type to buy a 2080ti you are just asking to be scammed.

  • I just sold my rtx 2080 super for 750.. hopefully that wasn't a bad decision ..Will 2080 super go lower after rtx 3070?
