Tolley Hope Valley Cellars Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2017 Case $150 + Shipping @ Dan Murphy's

50

First time post. I've ordered 2 cases of this so far from CellarMasters @ $240. So this deal is pretty decent @ Dan Murphy's @ $12.50 a bottle (excluding delivery). I'm no wine snob but this is a pretty decent drop for the money. Was also one of the Red Wine of the year finalists with CellarMaster: https://www.cellarmasters.com.au/wine-reservations-red-wine-…

Original cellarmaster listing (still at $240) with tasting notes: https://www.cellarmasters.com.au/red/shiraz/wine/tolley-hope…

Note: This product is shipped directly from the supplier which is why you won't find it on the shelf in your local store.

  • Seems like a good deal. Couldn't figure out how to order it from the link.

This product is shipped directly from the supplier

Ah, so following Amazon market, Kogan, etc.
You have to wonder why it is not good enough for Dan's to buy some. It is not like they are short of shelf space?
Ah, digging deeper we find the answer. It is a direct-sales house brand, same owners as Dan's.

Note that CellarMasters, like Dans, is a Woolworths branch, and "Tolley Hope Valley Cellars" is a Woolworths home-brand, not an actual winery.
So lashings of conflict of interest there. Not that any wine awards mean much more than an exchange of money.

Dan's may well sell wine from the same vats, but with a different house label, at a different price?
Could be great value, but be informed.

    • They have been selling products like this for a fair while now.
Gives small supplies more exposure, maybe relevant or not for this particular one.
Also some may not have stock to range all stores

I was hoping that was the case, but what "exposure" is a small business getting, when they can only sell under a Woolworths-owned brand?
They are reduced to commodity sellers, like a wheat farm.
They have no power. It is the same with suppliers to the supermarkets.

        • They sell many other products like this. Not necessarily the example products here.
I haven't looked recently, but a while ago there were many different brands you could get direct from supplier.

A huge proportion of Woolworth liquor (DM & BWS) wine range is their own brands. They don't say WW Liquor on the label, they have some shell companies so that people don't instantly recognise this. I think the WW one is Internation Liquor Company or Wholesalers or something - generally look for anything based in Mulgrave ie the Dans HQ. The Coles equivilent is anything based on Tooronga Rd, Hawthorn.

The reason a supplier might do it is to generate some volume without devaluing their own brand by discounting. As the wine is essentially just a label with nothing behind it, they will often change supplier year to year, which lacks a little bit of transparency.

The margins on these products are ridiculous, sometimes even greater than 50%. Paying full price on any is ridiculous. If they do any bundle deals with a well known brand, they will almost always put on of their private label wines in there, which absorbs the lost margin on the marquee part .

    • Dan has this MO for years. Way before Amazon and Kogan got into the wine side of things.
Many of the under wraps are big names and they come straight from the wineries.

      • Yes, "under wraps" is totally different, often discounted brand-names. But the brand is still on the bottle, just not advertised.

That indeed could be seen as a way to offload excess stock without devaluing the brand, while still giving wider exposure to the brand.

  • Paying full price at CM is a very bad move regardless of where the wines are from especially WW group's own labels.

Thanks all for the comments - learning lots!
I suppose I should clarify the main reason for me posting this - is that its just a good drop. It was good enough for me to actually pay the $240 per case TWO times, knowing full well it could be had for cheaper. But no regrets, as we, and friends and family have all enjoyed this wine. Doesn't even need decanting/breathing to enjoy. I know its subjective but just sharing the love :-)

No worries! Recommendations like that are appreciated. Thanks.
There are certainly some very good wines sold this way.

As long as you enjoy the wine, you can safely disregard all "expert" opinions. As far as CM is concerned, just pay attention to large cashback returns from CR or SB before you buy. You will save a lot. But you have to be quick. There are sharks out there :). However, IMHO, young reds, bar the ones made to be drunk young, will likely to benefit from a quick decant.

  • Tempted to order a case, sounds like a decent drop.

Always worth having a look at the rating and comments on vivino, a pretty reputable site. 3.9 starts is great.
