Do yourself a favour and get a wifi camera instead of a baby monitor. Avoid the baby tax and get something you might find a use for after you don't need to look at them every second of the day.

    • Yep! I'm happy with two TP-Link c200 cameras. For my twins.

I suspect this is good advice, but I want a full-time dedicated screen without tying up my phone. Any good solutions?

      • Use an old phone? Let go a little bit?(Second one is a joke, but sort of not a joke?)

For the second kid we only really used it once we were in bed, as an alert when she was crying. If you have an old phone that needs to be plugged in all the time that works, might only need an hour or so to keep an ear out while in the other room.

        • :-) Thanks for the advice, but this is not for a baby; I want it for a driveway monitor, and a baby monitor just happens to have the required components.

I just want a screen that can remain on all the time - or ideally, when the camera senses movement.

It looks like an old phone is the only sensible alternative.

          • @klaw81: In that case, I would definitely go the wifi camera, with no hesitation. I think it will have better longer range vision than the baby monitor, and probably a better resolution. There will also be better recording/backup options I imagine - whether that is useful depends on what you need it for.

My camera has the setting to notify when there is movement, not sure if you can set the screen to come on when that happens. You might be able to configure that? Probably useful that you can also view on any device and when you are off the network too.

            • @pdtmathieson: My main priority is having a stand-alone AC-powered screen linked to a camera feed.

I don't need to record or do anything fancy, just want to be able to see who's coming in my gate, and have some warning before they're knocking at the door.

    • I had a wifi camera but then got given a baby monitor for free. I find the baby monitor much better for being able to very quickly check on her (no waiting for stream to load). The led noise indicators are useful too.

Fair point about the baby tax though, but I'd probably consider it worthwhile in this case, given how much we use it for first couple of years.

I highly recommend the VAVA nightlight. Bought one for my toddler and she uses it at night so bought another one for late nights with baby. I like that it's easy to use that my 2 year old can turn it on and adjust the brightness. The battery lasts a while (over a week) as long as it's not on the brightest setting (then it's overnight) but we usually leave it on the charger anyway.

    • I second this. We bought it for late night feeds but now my toddler uses it and I just purchased another as I want one for my bedside table. Very useful and easy to use.

  • I've got the baby monitor. I like that it's easy to use. I think "simple" would be a huge plus for a new parent when they are trying to juggle so many new things with so little sleep. There are a lot of cheaper options when it comes to a wifi camera that will connect to your phone, but it takes a while to pull up and is a hassle.

  • We ordered vava baby monitor. We are really relieved now as we can clearly see what our little baby is doing with the amazing camera. I really like the quality of product, especially the camera.. I am a first time mother, and because of this product, I can easily do household chores, can read books in another room, as the sound quality is also very gud, and indicates very well to every moment of my baby
