Mod 13/9 (copy paste of the report reply): For those reporting that RRP should be in the forum or similar, there is no such guideline. As always the community will decide if it's a good deal or not via the voting system and/or comments. In general, a deal can be good value or of interest without being discounted as such, whilst a deal can be discounted but still be of little interest or poor value. In any case it's up to members to decide. In relation to potential issues about the deal details, should the deal not go ahead as posted, or another issue that breaches guidelines, it will be removed at that time. Please use TWAM for other issues and keep comments respectful. Thanks

Mod 2 15/9: Mwave has now announced there will be a raffle to purchase (that's a new one). The main deal link has been updated and the deal post moved to forums. Please join the raffle should you be interested in purchasing and continue discussion in the comments below.

DJ Clear dropping the truth bombs

    • +1

Yeah those leaked benchmarks bring the hype down a bit (at least as someone who's just interested in this as a spectator). Assuming those are correct, it's more of a "standard" performance increase rather than the claimed super hype gains.

    • Benchmarks aren't released yet, the rumoured benchmarks suggest it's pretty damn good.

  • Hi guys,
My current PSU is Corsair RMx Series Modular RM650x 650W 80 Plus Gold , will it run the RTX 3080?
My CPU is Ryzen 7 1700 stock speed.
Let me know if you need more details

    • +2

Your PSU might be OK, your CPU will likely be a bottleneck.

    • Assuming the 8600K (not OC-ed) is plenty of horse power to run the RTX3080 with no bottle necks? Running @ 1440p 144hz.

      Thanks! :)

  • Is it better to get a founders edition card or wait for a branded card like Gigabyte?

    • +1

A triple cooler third-party card would be 'better' technically but possibly more expensive.

The Founders Edition cards are cooler looking and will hold their value better.

      • +1

Do people actually buy second hand graphics cards? Buying new and dealing with potential DOA and mucking around with RMA is such a crapshoot I can't imagine taking the risk of buying used.

        • Apparently some do. Even for used hard drives which is a big no-no for me…

          • @Hybroid: That's wild. Especially the hard drives! I feel like they're coin flips whether they die early or not! Not to mention I'd just be paranoid about data recovery stuff…

        • +1

I've bought 6 used gpus over the years, ebay/gumtree/fb - never had a problem. Sure if you do, it's harder to get it resolved, but if you find a good deal, it's hard to pass up - not too hard to imagine

          • @lachhelix: Fair enough, just that I've had so many DOA computer components that I'm way too paranoid to buy second hand. Even if it was something like $250 for a $500 graphics card, that's too much money to risk getting a dud for me.

        • ive never bought a new graphics card. ive owned over 10 2nd hand gpus over the last 5 years and have never had a dud or failure.

    • Founders seems best value for money and I feel aesthetically looks the best so far

      • +1

I always buy Gigabyte branded cards and they have never failed me so might give the 3080 FE card a go

    • I think you might get better thermal headroom and performance with AIB/branded cards because they all try to differentiate themselves with giant coolers, fans, RGB, massive VRM and power delivery circuits, etc. The downside is if you plan to go watercooling it may be difficult to find a block that would be compatible. I think the new generation FEs are also non-reference.

For me, I am going FE this time unless AIBs are also launching in the same time frame? I am staying away from giant 3-slot coolers because I am now on ITX/SFF.

      • I never really OC myself. I usually purchase the Gigabyte OC cards.

        • +1

It's very easy. You're paying a premium for a minor OC done in 2 clicks. Either case, you can squeeze more performance out of them by doing it manually yourself.

          Start here: https://www.evga.com/precisionx1/

Tweak clock and fan speeds. Don't touch voltages.

      • And how are you going to go Fe exactly?

        • Sorry I don't quite get your question. You mean by joining the raffles?

          • @Davesday: "For me, I am going FE this time unless AIBs are also launching in the same time frame? I am staying away from giant 3-slot coolers because I am now on ITX/SFF."

And how are you going to go Fe exactly?

    • AIB should be much cheaper in theory because they're not the silicon winning cards Nvidia wanted, and they're custom meaning they should not cost more then the founders edition, but with the marketing…

Oh neon lights 8 fans, super chill edition, increase your cores elite master bla bla edition.

They all do the same thing, welcome to Australia.

  • Is there a 3070 FE card coming here? I only see 3080 and 3090, which are both beyond my budget. And I've been reading that MSI, Gigabyte etc cards will be more expensive?

    • We wont know until October sometime

    • Oct 15th or 16th release date, so we'll see if we get the FE too.

    • Link to 3070 FE from Nvidia site. Local stockist release to be confirmed

      • Thanks! Hoping it gets released here at an affordable price.

        • Pricing was already confirmed, 8XX$ for the FE. But if you are going for the 3070 FE, then it helps to wait and see what RDNA2 has to offer.

          • @[Deactivated]: Is that because RDNA2 specs and/or pricing are going to be announced prior to the 3070 release?

            • @Duckman: Not prior, but 2 weeks later. I am not sure if RDNA 2 can compete agaist 3080/3090 as there are no evident leaks yet. But should surely be faster than 3070 and be priced less to be competitive. Also to avoid any pitfalls that newly released models may have, its always better to wait. For example, when 2080ti was released, some cards had memory issues.

              • @[Deactivated]: Unfortunately given some of the software issues i've seen with AMD over the last 15 years on various cards/computers they would have to come out with hardware that was at least 50% better than an Nvidia card at the same price point before i even considered it.. and even then i'd want that improvement confirmed specifically in games i want to play.

  • Will mwave even have these in stock? I have a feeling orders won't be fulfilled until 2 or 3 weeks away.

    • +1

Its very unclear how these will be distributed. I grabbed some cheap memory from MWave over a week ago and its still to arrive. Is NVidia just going to ship them direct or will MWave be involved?

    • It may well be paying upfront for a later delivery and if some of us get unlucky we may get bumped behind the queue for 2nd or 3rd batch. I personally don't mind but by then AIBs may already be available.

  • Iā€™m making a build for 1440p 144ghz. Do I need a 3080 or a 2080ti should be enough for 2-3 years? Same for the ryzen if anyone can answer, should I wait for the new one or a 3900 should be good enough for that resolution?

    • 2080ti is ok on medium to high settings, if you want to max everything you need a 3080

    • +3

If you're already building something for the next 2-3 years just get the 3080 since the price may not be that different. Ideally you should hit 1440p at 144Hz all settings maxed out with just 80% GPU utilisation on the most demanding title. Meaning you have about 20% headroom for the future. You may hit the target at 100% today but few months down the road some AAA titles are going to tax your GPU and you will need to reduce your settings to hit the resolution target again.

The only exception is you need to complete you build now. Otherwise I don't see why you should jump the gun now.

    • +3

      144gigahertz (ha!).

if you are buying new and aiming for 'enough' over 2-3 years, i think its worth going 3080 if you can afford it. especially if you intend on playing new titles that may more heavily use ray tracing / dlss etc etc.

      • bloody phone auto-correction..

    • Yep my 1440p 144hz monitor made me sell the 2070 super and trying grab a 3080 on release.
was stuck at 1080p for warzone - not good enough….

couldn't keep this one to yourself? … :)

    • +3

Yeah was gonna say, keep this one to youself bro, this is literally a contest at this point.

    • How did you find these links?

  • +2

Been watching the latest videos on RTX 3000 series,

    Linus: Don't pre-order
JayTwoCents: Don't sell your RTX 2000 series yet.

    Interesting!

    • -1

I'm upgrading from a gtx 780 so I don't think that applies to me I will try to get 1 day 1

    • +1

I briefly watched the j2c vid and wasn't his point don't sell your 2080 ti if you're looking at the 3070, the 3080 on the other hand beats it in all aspects apart from 1gb less vram?

      • Side note I read that 1gb may make a big difference for machine learning tasks as currently many of the software written for high performance is tailored to use 11gb or it steps down. Won't take long for new releases but it is a sore point for the AI community apparently

Edit: saw its a raffle now. I reckon a 2080ti at the right price might be worth it for AI/ML.

      • +1

If it's the video I'm thinking of, his point was don't sell your card before you get your hands on the new one, because that's stupid and you could be left without a computer to play games on if they run out of stock. Which is kinda just common sense.

    • +1

It's called clickbait - YouTubers particularly the channels you mentioned are the biggest offenders of this

      • +1

Imagine thinking that telling people not to pre-order products before independent reviews are out is "clickbait".

Good luck to everyone trying to get a card btw, curious how many people will actually get their hands on one.

        • +1

Whirlpool suggestions prices are listed around $1500-1700 for 3080.

A big fat told you so coming up here at anyone seriously expecting cheap prices.

  • +10

Looks like FE models are no longer up for purchase, instead it will be a raffle due to limited stock. See here for details, make sure to sign up if you want one: https://www.mwave.com.au/catalog/nvidia-geforce-nvzone

    • +3

that's pretty absurd, I'm curious to see what the ratio of participants to stock will be.

    • +1

So they're being drawn on the 18th?
Partner cards would be available on the 17th from all retailers right? If you sit around and wait and hope to be selected you might miss out altogether.. =(

      • Are the AIB cards near FE price at all or is this going to be a price gouge either way? Damn…

    • great move by mwave. screw botters.

      • same people that bot know how to set up an auto re-directing email domain and sign up +100 times :(

            vet by courier ?

send photo ID to mwave ?

    • +2

Mwave is looking more an more like a scam for subscribers??

I just tried to register and it said im already on the mailing list???? - so the raffle is mwave staff just randomly "picking" subscribers… what a joke.

  • +1

    So are raffles still bargains?

    • +3

Yep to some. If BillyCool didn't post it above, most of us wouldn't have known. You can move on with your day now. Thanks BillyCool.

      • +2

There's no need to thank anyone if you were one of the 500+ people who are clearly serious about purchasing this product then no doubt you had already signed up for the notification and gotten the email anyway.

        • Signed up to account & notifications, didn't get the e-mail. Billy's note helped. Now signed up to raffle.

The crusade here against this is incredible.

  • +4

No longer a deal. It's a raffle and competition. Time to move this to the forums and settle it for once and for all.

  • +2

Now a raffle, please move to forums so I win. :D

    • Founders have always been a raffle , now it is official. :)

  • +1

Move to forums. EVERYBODY was wrong

  • +1
Merged from Mwave have decided to raffle the NVIDIA RTX 30(80/90) cards

"In the interest of fairness a raffle is being held for an invitation to purchase - due to limited stock." - https://www.mwave.com.au/catalog/nvidia-geforce-nvzone

The draw will happen on 3PM AEST September 18, 2020.

How do we feel about this? I feel like there will be a lot of disappointed people.

    • +4

Why is this in the forums, this should be posted as a deal.

Jokes aside, what can you do, for those that genuinely wanted cards it effectively reduced your chances though and poses a dilemma given they don't announce it till later on the 18th.

    • +2

Do they have so few "limited stock" that they decided to raffle them.?

      • +3

Essentially yes. I suspect this is done for a couple of reasons. 1. To stop their site from going down on release and 2. To try and combat the botters buying all the cards.

        • won't stop it crashing people will still check.

        • I do think it is a good idea , all interested parties are in with an even chance.
Interesting to see the 3070 in the raffle as that is not available for another month is my understanding.

          • +2

@RichardZed: The raffle builds mwave a marketing list so it's a shrewd tactic albeit very uncomfortable ethically

Oct 14 from memory for RTX 3070. It will have more competition as AIB 3080s will be in market so I don't expect the same rush.

        • Unlikely the reason is to avoid site traffic, there are lots of aftermarket models that will go on sale on the 17th, traffic will hit hard regardless.

  • raffle to buy :(

  • +8

I doubt this will stay low key on OZB.
FE 3080s are already mostly presold (unofficially) to friends and family with a few left to the public. This is why they've done the raffle system.
