Sample Scripture
John 15
1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

Good to see they giving away some Digital Fiction books on Amazon for once

Exactly. Evolution should be in the fiction section along with globe earth theory and the theory of gravity.

The bible is free digitally everywhere. And KJV is not the easiest version to understand.

    • +2

Other versions are easier to understand, so that makes them better generally for understanding Christianity.

But the KJV wording is the classic, famous wording that's been the standard in English for ages, so if you just want to read bits because it's by far the most influential classic in the English language for the last few centuries, this is the one (especially if you want a convenient bible on your Kindle, or like most people, the Kindle app on your phone).

Good for brushing up on old-fashioned English, etc. I recommend the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and the book of Genesis, for the life of Jesus and the most famous bible stories, in the KJV language.

(It's still not really a bargain though, it's always free).

    • +1

The same is true of Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare - but we still encourage people to read Shakespeare in the original language.

      • +1

Yeah but the original language for the bible isn't English, so might as well read a modern translation.

        • The problem with modern, is so many modern authors either lack faith or have ulterior motives.

I'm happy for correction of what is wrong, but how many "translations" are trying to get back to an accurate translation rather than preaching thier own ideas?

        • You are right, but it is the original language of the English translation and has had massive impact on Western literature, law and philosopy.

    • I think the KJV is free and not trademarked or copyright. Other versions of the Bible is not and copyright.

I don’t know why people in the west(developed world) are so anti Christian and someone posts a deal about Buddhism and people praise it. I have lived in 3 different countries with 3 different religious beliefs for a significant number of years and It’s bizarre! But they want to live in a Christian sorry ex Christian country, send their kids to Christian schools etc. I don’t care coz it doesn’t affect my line of work/business or anything but it’s surprising. I know about bad catholic priests but bad people are there in all faiths and in all regions. In fact the issues there is far far worse and scary to even think of!! In fact, I am allowed to say everything here but not in other countries where I have lived. In short I am asking why this shift happened?

    • +2

just a few of the guys showing us how smart and funny they are with their puns and fiction jokes

      it's very impressive

    • +5

Maybe people are voting down this "deal" because it is in no way a deal, and instead just a chance for the OP to spread some religious garbage.

      • +10

Most appear to be just anti-Christian sentiment

        • +3

I think its largely anti-religious sentiment.

People have a visceral reaction to folks peddling religion. OP's attempt was pretty brazen, and thinly veiled.

E.g. if I posted some deal around "free thetan checks" would OzBers (who are currently offended about the anti-religious sentiment) be fine with it? What about some falun gong "free literature"? Or massive discounts on the latest 2020 line of bukhas and hijabs? Perhaps, 50% off on the elephant god Ganesha, or a buy 1 Krishna idol and get a Bhagwad gita for free?

Personally, I do not believe there is a place for these deals in OzB; especially since we have people from all socio economic strata, different cultural backgrounds, different religious backgrounds etc.

Unless a platform is intended for discussions explicitly around religion, it is best to steer clear of these very controversial and divisive subject matter.

    • +2

fact, I am allowed to say everything here but not in other countries where I have lived.

That is due to the fact that theistic religion itself has been largely superceded here by other rules of law.

      • -3

Yup, and how's that working out in Victoria right about now?

      • -1

        Perhaps.

But the best YHWH law of all time still remains as Deuteronomy 25:11-12

      • +2

Most of our laws are ultimately based on Judeo-Christian tenets.

      • Compare the tenets of other religions, with the 10 commandments, then the tenets of naturalism, you will find that our current law system is explicitly Christian in design and function. Ie, the 10 commandments are basically written into law. Survival of the fittest can not be found anywhere(naturalism) , you cant marry your 2nd cousin or a 9 Yr old or beat your wife legally(Islam), the poor are treated like children of God rather than those deserving of devine punishment (hinduism).

        • -1

          Don't kid yourself.

The most universally agreeable tenets of all religions and cultures, theistic or otherwise, are pretty much based on the golden rule, which exists outside of and predates anything in the Bible.

The only parts of the ten commandments in Australia's laws these days are don't kill or steal, which are hardly unique to the ten commandments. The remaining 80%, however you choose to number them, are explicitly rejected or omitted by the laws.

Survival of the fittest is not an ethical basis for law, it's a pervasive natural process. Thinking natural things are immediately good and should be law is the naturalistic fallacy - something any reasonable law makers would understand. (Something that I hear all the time on these forums when I suggest people should not consume animals - "but natural, like lions, therefore must be good" - intellectually lazy and just plain wrong.)

The good bits of the Bible are pretty much the good bits in any religion, theistic or not. The remainder is essentially fluff, some being interesting curiosities or even inspirations for hope, but most often useless, sometimes even dangerous.

          • @fantombloo: The 10 commandments are largely value based, your legally allowed to covet your neighbours wife, but sleeping with a married women is a horrible thing to do for both parties. Law gets involved when the hurt husbands comes and assaults/kills you. You might laugh at some, but we, as a nation, follow them and enshrine them.

If we are animals, and religion is just fluff, why can't the fit just cull the weak? It might go against YOUR conscience, we can all appreciate that but not all people have functioning consciences. We have just survived a century were millions were exterminated for their racial and ethnic identities, ethical leaders are few and easily silenced! Relying in intrinsic human decency can't, and by observation, doesn't work, otherwise mass extermination wouldn't exist.

            • @lew380:

we, as a nation, follow them and enshrine them.

Really? Yahweh is never mentioned in media or any government announcements, and freedom of religion is protected. Saturdays (or Sundays if that's your flavour) are rife with activity. We have no legal obligation to do anything for our parents. In so far as we are not challenged for damages or maybe under oath in an official duty we can say what we want about anybody. There is no law for coveting anything. No-one is charged by the state for adultery; in fact you can have sex on the first day but can't marry for a month under current laws, or have sex when you're 16 but not marry till you're 18.

We have just survived a century were millions were exterminated for their racial and ethnic identities,

Yahweh himself established a pretty pattern for this himself in the opening 5 books of the Bible. Not sure what your point is? That people can be dunces? Sure. They were in biblical times, are now.

              • @fantombloo: The law allows for some lawlessness and only cracks down when you do something really bad. You have no legal obligations do anything good, but the fact that helping your parents, faithfulness, caring for the less fortunate are encouraged is a sign that we are following the biblical law, rather than self law. The definition of 'good' comes from the bible, whether it is enforced strictly, or people choose to be good is another issue.

Just as an example, go to any other country where the Bible isn't foundational to their laws and lifestyles and the definition of good shifts very quickly!

God is unique in that he can judge, you can't compare Hitler to God, Hitler killed innocent people because he was evil, God punishes nations who become debased and degenerative, an almighty God has a right to judge, you and I do not have that kind of clarity.

                • -1

@lew380: Sounds like you've never been to any other country. The way some Eastern cultures look after their parents make the Christian West look totally irresponsible in that regard.

Yahweh has been absent for over 2000 years. And thankfully so - his bloodlust was bizzare to say the least. You want to worship the star of the fables dreamt up by imaginative goat herders, knock yourself out. The fact is that those fables are largely incompatible with modern standards of living, and it's only the few compatible things that Bible believers can readily peddle now. Don't kill, don't steal - duh, these have been standards in every part of the world since time immemorial. Love others as yourself - found in every religion. Kill a pigeon in this particular way before offering it as a sacrifice, or breaking a pot that a woman on her periods has touched, or stoning to death homosexuals - why don't you peddle this? Because it's bronze age fluff. Insofar as your beliefs don't cause others harm, I don't really care, but that's most possible if they're put in their place: the relics of a less informed age.

                  • +1

@fantombloo: Your hostility and ignorance of the Bible is on full display! It's a big book, but at least read a good summary or guide before you start throwing around baseless slander! The old testament, although showing the nature of God, establishes a Jewish nation and culture designed to preserve and guide a people in a barbaric and tribalistic environment. You laugh at the cleanliness parts, but it was a miraculous insight into a world full of disease and ignorance and incest.

Love others more than yourself, pray for those who persecute you (wish good upon your enemies?!!?), these are concepts entirely alien to other religions, and our society is no better. The new testament is largely non cultural, it doesn't push a set culture of vague concepts, it leaves the nature of cleanliness up to us but leaves us with larger principals of morality, it's why we don't promote stoning homosexuals or adulterous people or kids who are rebellious. It's not to say that either of these things are morally good, it's that God has given us a mandate to love sinners, pray and love them (even if they kill us) and leave the judgement up to God.

                    • -1

@lew380: Dude, I've been there. It was for years my touchstone and I'll wager I've studied it more than you.

The atrocities of Yahweh cannot be viewed as atrocities if you declare him all good, just like racists can't see the atrocities of racism since they think they are racially justified, or nonvegans can't see the atrocity of over a trillion unnecessary animal deaths per year because it's just the way it is.

There is no new morality in the Bible. The NT basically caught up with Greek standards of the day - it is essentially Platonic philosophy (theory of perfect forms) overlaid with Jewish relics. Jn1:1 - Jesus was the "logos" - a centrepiece of Greek philosophy, poorly translated to "word" to suit various agendas is the day.

You have been waiting for JC to come "soon" - his contemporaries expected his return in their own times - yet he's been now missing longer than the entire old covenant period. Christianity as espoused by the mainstream is a tragic failure and full of immorality. Slaves, racism, sexism, heterosexism, unquestioned hierarchies - it's got the lot.

                      • @fantombloo: The bible isn't SJW enough for you? If your standard of morals is current progressive idealogy then the problem is more with twisted morality than the bible. It's not racist, or sexist or slave promoting. They are weak arguments to make.

I'll take those two moral commandments in my last post, they were far greater than any Greek standards. The greeks were really very barbaric to be honest, I think you've read some pretty manipulated articles on that.

The word 'logos' is a good translation, it fits well with usage throughout the bible so I don't see how your taking the language used to convey concepts as plaigerism or something. The word fits well, they used it, good for them.

                        • @lew380:

The bible isn't SJW enough for you?

Not enough SJ, too much W.

"I don’t know why people in the west(developed world) are so anti Christian" cultural marxism is the reason.

      • +10

Yep, and don't think that most people are Antichristian, they're not. There's a few that are, and they always feel the need to go screaming it everywhere to feel important. We have carols services which are packed, packed churches on Easter and Christmas etc.
On a side not , if this was a Quran, I wonder if they'd say the same thing…

        • +3

I think there has been other religious posts that have attracted negs but Christian one definitely get hit the hardest

    • Religion is used to control the minds of the masses.

      • Not looking to argue, just curious why you think this?

        • -2

I guess because 'that's what people say'. In reality there are MANY ways the minds of the masses have been and are being controlled but at this point in time in our part of the world the influence of 'religion' only seems to apply to small number of adherents. Or it maybe a left-over thought from 500 years ago when the Catholic Church had a lot of power in Europe and used that power for clearly political purposes? And aside from all that I would like to hear particulars of how 'religion is controlling the minds of the masses'? Popcorn anyone?

        • +5

Many who are brought up in religious households are taught to believe their religion is the right one, above other faiths. It's just like any other thing that's used to segregate people ie. race.

It's been used to suppress masses of people, to this day it is still happening. So many countless lives have been lost in waging wars using religion as their belief against others.

The world would be a MUCH better place if there was no religion.

Not to mention that religious entities don't even pay tax!

Yes some fundamental beliefs of many religions are sound, but these follow common sense principles…no need to have a religion to guide you to be a decent person.

          • -2

@SelfMade: So let me see if I can break your complaint down so I can understand it better.

-You think religion should be 'banned' because some people think they are right and people who believe differently are wrong?
-Religion is one of the tools used to suppress 'masses of people'? Yet you gave no examples of how this applies to Australia in the 21st century.
-People have died fighting 'religious wars' and while that's true it is not true that 'most' wars are fought over religion. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/is-religion-the-cause-of-_b_1… Look at last century's conflicts, the Marxist revolutions in Russia and China, WW1, WW2, Vietnam and Korea..none of those were religious wars nor caused by religion.
-"The world would be a MUCH better place if there was no religion." How do you know? Maybe it's religious beliefs that are preventing the world from being even worse than it is?

-"Not to mention that religious entities don't even pay tax!" So what? Have you seen how government wastes most of the tax money they steal? Or are you upset that some religion doesn't tithe to your false God of state?

            • +1

@EightImmortals: I don't have time to argue, each to their own.

I am just very glad I was not raised in an overly religious household so that I can make up my mind freely as to what I want to believe.

    • -8

We still have prayers in parliament and there used to be prayers in public school assemblies… until they started teaching evolution in our schools.

Now it's all hail Lucy, the best evidence the atheists have of the missing link, literally manufactured mostly of bronze and fashioned by a human sculptor.

Literally a fabricated idol now worshiped on a pedestal called the Smithsonian.

Funny how the Bible actually predicted this would happen…

their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. (Romans 1:21-23)

    • +3

Definitely, people should be tolerant of other people's beliefs and I don't see this especially in online contexts. You're of course free to have your own opinion (I am not religious fyi) but respect for other beliefs and cultures should be first and foremost. Don't let religion (as well as race etc) divide us, we all have to be tolerant of each other in such a diverse world.
There are 'bad Catholic priests' in every religion, as well as in the atheist group. It's egregious that these exist, but keep in mind every group has 'good' and 'bad' people with good generally being the majority.

    • +2

That's because Buddhism is more of a philosophy than a religion. People are finally waking up to religion and how it's used to manipulate and control.

      • Crikey, in that case wait till they wake up to 'government' and the main stream media…there could be blood in the streets!

    • Re bad priests: I don't know of any other faith/ religion/ organisation that is established with specific rules to achieve this goal.
In any other organisation, a bad egg would be dealt with.
With the catholic church, they don't allow priests to have any open relationship, leaving them to grovel in the dark for someone to prey on. When they get caught, the church's method of "dealing with it" is to provide fresh victims. If there is a source of evil, I have do doubt it is leading the catholic church.

Re anti-Christianity, the rest of the world are yet to evolve to our superior intellect and understand that we are just monkeys in clothes, so it is pointless trying to fill that desire to know your creator. We will come up with a way to deal with drugs and depression and whatever else we find to try to fill that void.

    Guaranteed ways to get negs:
    - Post an RTX20 series GPU
    - Post any Christian material

    • +1

As stated above, it's not a bargain - it's usually free. If there was a post for a free Quran, it too would get negs.

      • +2

Agreed, though I feel most the negs (like in most previous religious material posts) are just hate towards religion rather than a legitimate reason

        • That may be true, but it would also apply to any deals associated with politics, gay or race rights.

      • Can I get a free Quran? I wish this stuff would get posted. This site could be, and is to a certain degree, a community service where to get stuff cheap and free.

We're happy to post the same ebooks and udemy courses over and over, but we have same categories - or is it just one - that will stir up the lobbiests.

  • +2

Whilst it is a great book to read, it is not a deal as King James version has no copyright.

    • -1

Whether something is copyrighted or not isn't what makes it a bargain.

If this was a leather-bound KJV for $0 it would be a bargain, even if it isn't something some peopel here would choose put to partake of.

This isn't a bargain, apparently, because this particular product (pdf or whatever it is) is always available for free.

The problem is, if somebody was looking for a KJV PDF, this would have met that need, if it was posted on the bargains page. And thus would be a better post than the udemy courses and ebooks. But not according tho the rules. They would have to occassionally charge for it, then reduce the price to make it a bargain.
Unfortunately legalistic lobbyists drain the benefit out of sites like this.
