How is this a bargain when it was $75 previously?

    • +1

Considering at one point they were selling for over $200 it is a deal.

Though I agree it is purely the price rises to deal with demand. In April/May we saw people selling crappy Logitech 720p ones for almost $200.

Rip-off, taking advantage of the lockdown etc sure demand has gone up, but price of manufacturing it hasn't.

Got to make them Only fans bucks.

  • Personally I'd be buying an AliExpress webcam for about $25

    • Have always been disappointed in their 1080p cameras. The logi's always look better. There's certainly a use for the cheapies though

  • Can anyone recommend a decent 1080p webcam that isn't a rip-off or am I better off just waiting until demand drops off? Just to be used to video chat with family and friends.

Hey Wheels08, I can recommend this one from Havit. I have been using it during this strange year for online counselling, business meetings, and family catch-ups.
I get positive feedback on the quality of video & audio, it works every time on my various Win10 devices, and it's autofocus is pretty good (not flawless).
I have not used it for action/gamer streaming - like my teenagers might - and so I can't comment on suitability to that genre.
To be clear, I had been contemplating spending $300+ on some fancy-pants webcam but my inner OzBargainer yelled at me to give this a crack first. No regrets.
It is currently $55AUD. They normally have free delivery which is prompt - it took 7 days to regional NSW last month for another product. I have found them attentive to any enquiries.

Whilst I am here I would also like to recommend their low profile mech k/b's which I have been using for a few years now. They have been faultless, robust and are also fatigue free after being used for 8-10 hour stretches at work.

I use the 104 key version at home/work and the 87 key when travelling.
As always with online recommendations…. YMMV. 😊

Hey R3b3l66, thankyou for your detailed response. Yeah I would only be using it for the same situations as you, not required for gamer streaming so that sounds good. I will grab one.
Also appreciate the K/B recommendation. I will take a look.
        Thanks

  • Was $80 from MSY a few years ago

It's incredible how even the big stores like office works have tripled the price on these. I'm still spewing for paying $70 in March for the C930 instead of the $30 that I was originally watching it for in February. I can only imagine how the people buying this piece of junk feel.

Webcams - The most under-innovated and over-priced piece of tech in the world.

    • Well they were pretty much dead tech for years at the consumer level, with tablets, laptops and phones all coming with them. Feel your pain though as I need a webcam at the moment, not for anything Covid related just general requirement, but refuse to pay these silly amounts for old tat.

I'm in the same situation.. Cracked it with the prices and repurposed my partners old Android phone with droidcamx. 5 bucks.

        • Yes looking in to that now thanks to this thread, another app called IP Webcam looks like it might cover some other needs. I have a couple of those Telstra 4GX phones from and earlier OzBargain free deal so with a little luck those will do.

        • Well many thanks, I had not considered this as an option at all. DroidCamX worked straight out the box, IP Webcam required a couple more tweaks but also worked within a minute of first using it. This was with Octoprint on a Raspberry Pi.

I will probably grab a webcam another year when they come back down to earth price wise.

Tripled is an exaggeration, where was it being sold for $30 brand new?

    • It's not the big stores pumping the prices, without mentioning names I know of a big retailer getting the c922 for 131. There simply is no stock.

I have this cam setup in our lounge room, through my media player PC, for interstate family Skype calls.
While the close-up images are fine, anything further than a couple of metres away is out of focus and only worthy of a $20 webcam.

    • I'd expect that for any webcam, regardless of price. They're designed for using at close range.

Just use your phone camera and droid cam on PC. I took an old phone I had, installed droidcam on both PC and the phone and connected by USB. Didnt have to pay a cent for a webcam for work!

    • Great one and you also get HD with this setup.

    • @blackman
Thanks for that tip, I now have 1,002 uses for an old smartphone/iPhone (e.g. Netflix remote control for my 92 yo mum, gps tracking for the family dog etc (incorporated into the collar of a large dog) etc.). I hate old phones going to landfil :)

P.S. These are great quality web-cams… I always like to unplug them at the end of a session. Beats sticking tape across the camera on the laptop pc (crappy 720p quality anyway).

    • You got lucky if work allowed you to install any program on their asset. Ours are pretty strict on installing unauthorised (i.e. not tested by them) programs by forcing you to enter an admin username and password to install anything (even Chrome or Firefox) so this wasnt going to fly.

Anyway, I actually forgot I had bought this cam from Amazon US a year or so ago and luckily i found it while cleaning my closet…quality aint bad but really when you are connected to VPN and have to use Teams, the video quality rarely hits 1080p but at least its clear.

  • Any cheapo ones from Ali work easily with a Octoprint? I know the PS3 Eye does but I was hoping for something a tiny bit better. Unfortunately the one I already own, from Logitech, doesn’t work unless it’s given exterior power.

    • I’d recommend the 1080p pi cam with extended ribbon. No hassles with power source, decent quality, and cheap.

  • I bought mine for 90.30!

  • This probably explain what happened to Webcam prices

I bought this for $75 in 2014. It's bad enough when manufacturers just milk the same product year after year, even worse when the price skyrockets

    • +2

@papgoose… Not always the manufacturer's fault. I am not necessarily defending Logitech here. There are currently global shortages for many of the components that go into manufacturing these cams and many other IT products. Also, due to the global pandemic, there are ships at sea carrying goods that cannot dock in ports to unload cargoes that are also contributing to shortages. More shortages to come.

  • Talk about price gouging. (profanity) these guys. I just use IV Cam app on my phone.

I was in the market for a webcam but this is so much better quality and cheaper!

I converted one of my Canon DSLRs to a webcam: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/se…

    There is also software for
    Nikon: https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/176.ht…
    Panasonic: https://www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/lumixtether.…
    Olympus: https://learnandsupport.getolympus.com/olympus-om-d-webcam-b…
    Sony: https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/webcam/en/
    Fuji: https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/webcam-support/

Alternative you can buy a cheap $27 capture card from Amazon (example: https://www.amazon.com.au/Portable-Camcorder-Definition-Acqu… ) and convert any camera with HDMI out to a webcam … best quality and cheap!

So when you have a camera at home you can save some money (when you have a camera sitting around).

      • A small note would be that the camera needs to have 'clean' HDMI output, unless supported/resolved by the program(s) from the manufacturers.
  • Does anyone know how much Logitech have jacked their pricing up? Given it's not only OW that has a pumped up price, do we expect the retailers to sell for $75 if they are being charged $100+ to buy it from the local distributor?

  • I’m always amazed at how much people complain about these webcams.

The only fault I’ve found in the C920 or the C930 after 5 years of live streaming is that the USB connection wears out after 6 or so months of heavy use and requires a new one to be put on.

Also wondering where these have been on sale for $30. I haven’t seen them under $100 ever since 2016. I do admit that I did some pretty basic searches so I could have missed it.

    • Also wondering where these have been on sale for $30

They haven't, some people just feel the need to exaggerate to justify their negative votes.

I have started using DroidCam on a spare phone for free.

Most phones over the last 5 years have cameras superior to most webcams.

    Works a treat.

    1. Install and run DroidCam on mobile
    2. When you want to Zoom/MS Teams/Google Meet etc, run Droidcam Client on your PC - point it to the address of the phone.

Cost $0 + something to hold the phone
