Have You Ever Watched a Movie and Realized You Didn't Enjoy It? if So, What Movie?

I watched I'm Thinking of Ending Things last night after seeing the trailer on YouTube. The trailer made me hopeful - it seemed somewhat like the movie Get Out where a man is meeting his girlfriends family and strange things begin to happen.

What I got was two hours of pretentious dialogue and not much else. A suspenseful thriller becomes a 10 minute long dance number (apparently from the musical "Oklahoma"). The whole time I was waiting for something interesting to happen. The movie has a rating of 7/10 on IMDB and I just don't understand why. It's not a drama nor a thriller. It's a surreal movie that achieves nothing and I wish I had seen something else. You could argue that the point of a movie is to make you feel something and it achieved that by making me feel angry. It reminds me of the time I slogged through an hour of The Lobster.

Maybe I just don't appreciate art. I've never been one to walk into an art gallery and marvel at someone who has thrown paint at a canvas.

Anyway, what films have you hated/walked out of the theater/returned to the DVD store in disgust?

Edit If you disagree with people's opinions, write a comment. Don't just neg vote them because they hate a movie you like.

    • Despite the glowing reviews this movie was so bad .

  • There is one time we went to cinema the movie was not good for the first 15 min then we went out and get refund from the cinema, forget which cinema it was and whether they still doing it.

I did not enjoy Blade Runner 2049. It wasn't bad but it was hyped up to be this amazing movie. Visually pretty but the pace was so slow I just got bored quickly.

    • +3

Mad fan of the first one, totally underwhelmed by the new one. My only fear now as a huge Dune fan, this next one will be more of the same hot garbage pseudo remakes.

  • Cousin dragged me out to see the first Paranormal Activity in the cinema.
We left about 20 minutes in.

    • The best part of that movie was the last 20 mins.

      Like Blair Witch

  • +1

The George Lucas Star Wars prequels were hot rubbish even though I wanted so much to enjoy them.

Inception as a well regarded movie on imdb and rotten, left me cold. Couldn't work out the hows and whys. I think it tried to reach for something, but ended up such a confusing mess for me. Love the visuals, and wanted to like it because of Nolan but couldn't get into it.

    Edward Scissorhands

    Bored out of my mind.

  • Yep. I was watching this viking movie on Stan because it looked kinda interesting but as I continued to watch it, it became clear that I didn't really enjoy watching it.
I persisted in trying to watch more of it but I ended just not finishing it.

  • Most recently, "Project Power"… Saw all the shorts for it. Got super hyped. Watched it as soon as it dropped. 3 out of 10. What absolute trash. I lost interest about quarter of the way through and just had to power watch the rest in the hope that it got better. Most of the actors seemed to phone their roles in and the plot line was pretty thin on the ground and super predicable. And did I mention the acting. God it was woeful. So, no, I didn't enjoy it.

  • All the time. Most movies.
I usually watch the beginning of 2 movies before I settle for one that I find interesting.

I've never walked out of a cinema because I rarely go, so I'm pretty cautious in terms of what I watch when I do go. That being said, some movies that I've watched at home that I've a notable dislike for (and recall off the top of my head) include:

    • Pacific Rim- Wasted opportunity and poor structure in terms of setups and payoffs.
    • Edge of Tomorrow- Felt cheated at the end, like I was tricked into caring for the entirety of the third act, only to get rug-pulled
    • Rambo: First Blood Part 2- Feels like the inverse of First Blood. Took everything good and special about the first movie and threw it out the window. Replaced with lazy writing, lowest common denominator trash, devoid of depth or heart.
    • Death Bed: The Bed That Eats- Watched it with a friend in the hopes of it being a so-good-it's-bad gem. Totally boring.
    • Mac & Me- Same as above. So boring that my friend almost fell asleep part-way through
    • Tomie- Some interesting/unusual visuals and and creepy atmosphere that fades quickly after you realise that nothing happens for the whole movie.
    • Deadpool 2- Jokes felt tired, stretched out, and predictable. The humour (particularly the 4th wall breaking stuff) just felt lazy and condescending instead of funny. I just wanted it to end.
    • Rebirth of Mothra 2- Stupid and boring. Stopped watching part way through
    • Evangelion 3.33- I disliked 2, but this made it look like a masterpiece. Felt like an inverse of Evangelion. Nothing made sense
    • Pacific Rim was awful! I liked Edge of Tomorrow but I know what you mean about the rug being pulled at the end. There's a sequel being made.

Mac & Me sure is terrible but little kids always love it.when I show it.

    Midsommar

I also made my friends watch it too, they are no longer my friends

    • Its not a bad movie but I wish I hadn't watched it.

    • I agree, what a silly movie that drags on for a ridiculous length of time.

      • +2

Reason why we watched it was because of the high rotten tomatoes ranking.

The Lake House. More like The Outhouse.

The Note Book. Should be listed under realistic horror. Who wants to be reminded old age may bring dementia.

Interstellar. Black hole visual was cool. Daddy in the bookshelf was brain dead. Acting was terrible.

All the recent Star Wars films. Ok I admit I still haven't seen Rise of Palpatine.

Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. Not my childhood super hero. Unlikable neck snapping emo brat. (Henry Cavil wasn't the problem. He was great in Witcher.).

Going to get destroyed for this - but I really disliked the Joker.

The social critique was so ham fisted (Parasite was a good example of social critique done masterfully), there was no realism in how the protests/movement started and grew either. It was VERY predictable - everyone you thought he might kill, did get killed, in exactly the way you expected them to get killed. I also barely felt invested in any of the characters. Phoenix's portrayal of the Joker was a nice change - but ultimately gave me nothing beyond what I got from the trailer.

I think all the people who were losing their minds over how 'deep' the film was need to go out and watch more films.

Cinematography was nice though. Still think Nolan/Ledger's Joker was the best of the lot by far.

Yeah it was meh for me too, people read a lot more into it than was intended I'm thinking.

  • Togo. I hate that movie. It made me want a husky so much.
And everywhere I look, there are people with huskies. EVERYONE HAS A HUSKY except for me.
    Hate that movie.

  • Picnic at Hanging Rock….only movie I have ever walked out of a cinema before it finished

Was this back in the 70s? I can’t imagine what it was like to see this film back then. Even now it’s a totally singular experience, otherworldly and scary. You can’t say about many Australian films.

    • Can't agree with that one, but then I watched it when it first came out. It was completely left field, for it's time, and they made it look like it was based on a true story.

  • +1

The Lighthouse - absolute crap in the name of "Film noire" or whatever the shit it's
Antichrist - stinking gobshite that will bring your iq down by 30 points - couldn't watch this crap beyond a point
Shite emancipation of blah blah yadda one harley queen (or whatever the F**$ it's called) - stupid garbage
Glass - an example that proves not every movie needs a sequel - drab and boring shit
    Signs - stupid shit

    • The Lighthouse was an example of a movie being totally different to what I thought it would be like from the trailer lol. Thought it was horrible.

    Blade Runner (1982)
I do understand that it was made in 1982 but it was just so… boring? I kept waiting for cool stuff to happen but it never did.
And the story was confusing as hell and it felt like it has no progression and I am angry that I had to read online forums to understand the story completely.

Blade Runner 2049, on the other hand, I loved it and it was absolutely great to watch. I think it is one of the best movies out there. I am just very confused about the original Blade Runner and what made it so great…

    • +5

I do understand that it was made in 1982 but it was just so… boring?

It was a detective movie in the style of noire detective movies, so yeah it should be pretty boring. It's the fact it was set in the future around all these amazing things that the characters all took for granted, that's what made it a good movie. The crawl at the start explains the whole plot you, which is that Blade Runners hunt down rogue androids. What else do you need to know?

      • For some reason your reply wasn't in my notifications.

What else do you need to know?

Nothing because now I know everything as it was all interesting for me but just very confusing when I watched it first time.
I didn't have a single problem "getting" or "understanding" BR2049 but I am not sure whether it was because I already thoroughly knew BR story and details or because it was just more interesting to watch.

    Man of steel (2013).

Watched on imax. I only went to see this because a I happen to see Nolan’s name mentioned somewhere and I liked the trailers leading up to it. But Zynder’s style of direction totally ruined my expectation. Hate to say of the whole movie I just liked the parts of trailer in it… What a disaster.

    • Yeah I even gave Superman Returns a little credit for continuing the legacy, was MOS was just silliness wrapped in some CGI.

  • +2

I've never walked out on a movie. I've stopped plenty of downloaded movies though. Some movies are just plain bad whether you're familiar with the genre already or not.

    Human Centipede

  • Chloe grace moretz's movie: The 5th wave.
I went to a friend's house one day and then all of a sudden, he was like, "I feel like watching a movie in the cinema. Wanna go? Let me have a look what's on".
And then he picked The 5th wave and booked the seats. We went and watched it and then when it finished, he was like: "That was so shiet!!!"

    I LOL'ed :P

  • Cloverfield. Almost threw up midway. Had to walk out of the cinema.

    • Was that because you found it to be a crap movie, or because of the continual camera movements? I remember there being stories about lots of people getting motion sickness from the constant moving of the camera throughout.

    A Quiet Place.

Got good reviews but I found it ridiculous. I mean how could they be so daft deciding to have a baby when big bad monsters, who respond to sound, are running around.

If they took the baby story out and replaced it with something less ridiculous, I reckon it would have been better.

I often find that movies that develop a "cult following" are usually quite bad/boring.

      • they definitely cater to a certain audience. tropic thunder is like that - i found the jokes really basic, but people seem to love it

    • I'm with on this one. Some memorable moments, but still a 7/10 film

    • +1

Yeah well that's just like your opinion, man.

    • With you on this one. Maybe it's because the people who suggested I watch it talked it up to great heights.

  • +2

I'm gonna say it, Interstellar. I saw it at the IMAX or whatever the huge cinema ar Darling Harbour used to be - cost us a fortune and we walked out lol, took me 3 goes in the end to finish it. It's just so long, and slow, and boring.

    • I managed to finish it in one sitting but I will never ever sit down and watch it again

What a wankfest of a movie

      • Yeah I won't ever watch it again which is a shame because I typically like Matthew McConaughey

    • +4

I love that movie watched it over 10 times.

    • +1

I thought the space stuff was really good, but the movie centering around Murph was the mistake, such an annoying character!

  • The Dark Knight trilogy.

I just can't take it seriously when the protagonist is running around in a rubber suit.

    • I thought everyone ran around in latex suits, or that just me?

  • +2

Marriage Story. I can appreciate the performances from the two leads (Driver & Johansson) and the two supporting actors (Liotta & Dern) were all great but it didn't help that none of characters was likeable and the plot left me frustrated that if she hadn't got the lawyers involved it all would have been sorted out amicably like it was at the end. Typical Oscar's bait film that the Academy all love and the audience just goes well that was meh.

    Double freaking Dragon.

I actually walked out, Cinema didn't even try to argue with me about refund.

Oh yes and Skyline. Member Skyline?

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1564585/

    • Double Dragon - yeh, wouldn't have wanted to pay to see that but as a VHS rental, I thought it was a fun movie and better than I thought it would be. I'm a fan of the game.

    • lol forgot about double dragon…

  • +1

The Hateful Eight - I love Tarrantino films but this just dragged on.

  • Wreck it Ralph.

Got free pass from work competition in 2012 so took my then gf (now wife) with me. Walked out 10 - 12 minutes into the movie.

I can't even get to watch it even with my 2 year old daughter now.

  • +3

Lego movie. Sorry, but couldn't stand it. Paid to rent it, and stopped watching after 20 minutes.

    • Yep, watched via streaming due to hype, and could not believe how bad it was. Lasted 15 minutes maybe.

  • Chucked on 'The Invention of Lying' on NF the other day.
    Wow, garbage.

  • I can tolerate bad hero movies, but Harley Quinn Birds of prey was extremely bad… I've never walked out of a movie, but 10mins in was ready to walk out

    • … and did you walk out?

    • Not keen to see it after Suicide Squad - her "comedy" was just kinda forced and lame.

  • +1

The later "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. The first one is fantastic and then they just seem to crank the handle after that.

I almost walked out of "Jay and Silent Bob", it got a tad better later on but it is one of the worst openings of a film I've seen. If I hadn't been in the middle section of a row I would've left. However, if people haven't seen Dogma yet, it is one of my favourite films.

  • +2

Dunkirk - I am really fascinated by WW2 movies but found this incredibly boring

Anchorman - I feel like one of the only people who just doesn't get click with this movie

    • +1

I'm with ya. I just don't get the appeal of Anchorman.

Same with Dunkirk. I reckon I would have enjoyed it more with a linear narrative. The back and forth kind of annoyed me.

    • Dunkirk, didn't rate.
      Anchorman - love.

    The original Matrix.

Walked out. Only to return years later to the dvd and quite enjoyed it.

    • +4

I saw it in the cinema at the time and didn't think it was that good. In time, we found out that there weren't going to be any better.

  • +4

    Mulan 2020,
    What a disaster

    • it was alright….Editing was kinda bad and the lack of a human side to the characters was a bit boring

      • Deep characters and development is the whole point the original worked so well though

        • True. I like the mushu dragon pet in the original and the prince charming guy wasn't lifeless. The main actress is suited towards kung fu films and not drama.

The director was a terrible choice. Should've picked a brilliant Asian or Asian American director (someone who knows Chinese films!) who knows how to add that Hollywood factor.

  • My favourite movies are all in the imdb bottom 100

    Going overboard

    The master of disguise

    FRED- the movie

    Freddy got fingered

I didn’t like a movie called Pulp Fiction! Absolutely hated it. Sure many will disagree.

    On the other side:

Best TV series made in the west: True Detectives Season 1 (Oh Marty please return for season 4…………….)
Best TV series made in China: A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower, it's on youtube with English subtitle:

    Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ofj8zIBqrI

Or you can watch the whole series here: https://youtu.be/RRczNO40Zww

Without giving away the plot it really is amazing to see the imbalance between the rich and the poor, how police investigation works in china as well as talks about many social issues currently happening in China (just like the rest of the world). And the plot? The twist and turns just totally amazed me when I am so sure I had it all figured out just to be totally blown away by it midway into the series, then when I thought I had it all figured it out only to be blown away by it at the end……………oh boy oh boy, what a series. Finished it in 2 days!!!!!!!

    • +1

There won't be any more True Detective made by the original creator he said. Its better this way though. S3 was just as brilliant imo so I'm happy.

      • Oh really? Sad sad to know…… They really need to bring back the season 1 vibe, season 3 is fine but its a bit too slow-paced. Still good though.

    • I didnt like Pulp Fiction either. Too much talking. I feel sorry for the actors who had all these lines to memorize.

  • The VelociPastor

After losing his parents, a priest travels to China, where he inherits a mysterious ability that allows him to turn into a dinosaur. Although he is horrified by the new power, a hooker convinces him to use it to fight crime. And ninjas.
