I watched I'm Thinking of Ending Things last night after seeing the trailer on YouTube. The trailer made me hopeful - it seemed somewhat like the movie Get Out where a man is meeting his girlfriends family and strange things begin to happen.

What I got was two hours of pretentious dialogue and not much else. A suspenseful thriller becomes a 10 minute long dance number (apparently from the musical "Oklahoma"). The whole time I was waiting for something interesting to happen. The movie has a rating of 7/10 on IMDB and I just don't understand why. It's not a drama nor a thriller. It's a surreal movie that achieves nothing and I wish I had seen something else. You could argue that the point of a movie is to make you feel something and it achieved that by making me feel angry. It reminds me of the time I slogged through an hour of The Lobster.

Maybe I just don't appreciate art. I've never been one to walk into an art gallery and marvel at someone who has thrown paint at a canvas.

Anyway, what films have you hated/walked out of the theater/returned to the DVD store in disgust?

    50 shades 2 (my wife made me watch this one i hadnt seen the 1st one i dont think that would of make it better)

    Ghost Busters 2016 (we get it you hate men)

    Oceans seven (what where they smoking)

    La la Land (got 7 mins in and i was out)

    Most movies with Will Farrel ie Elf, talladega nights etc (not step brothers)

    Every fast and Furious after 5 like literally this franchise is dead (and dont get me started on Hobs and Shaw That is just flaming shit)

    Epic movie (just trash)

    Norbit (flaming trash)

    Pixal (Adem Sandler has lost talent as he has got older)

    Battlefield earth (why just why)

    Prometheus (zzZz)

    Hobbit 3 (they just took it too far)

    Spiderman 2 away from home (this movie is worse then spiderman 3 imo)

    Incredible Hulk both of them

    Every Terminator after 2 bar the one with Christian Bale (took it too far)

    Sicario (Also really boring)

    Star Wars 9 (just a terrible ending to the greatest story in the original trilogy just a massive cash grab from Disney)

      The Incredible Hulk is highly underrated IMO. I thought the action scenes were amazing (e.g. the fight at the university and the fight against Abomination).

    Schindler's List - what was the deal with the black-and-white?
    Police Academy - taught me nothing about becoming a police officer (which I was very interested in at the time)
    Goodfellas - They weren't good fellows at all. A complete lie of a title.

      Black and white in the age of colour is used (probably) exclusively for artistic purpose. I've only seen the movie once several years ago (for history class) and didn't particularly care for it. I think it was intended to create an atmosphere of depression and despair by removing any traces of bright colours, as well as highlighting one particular character who wears a red coat, which is the sole object in colour in the film. Black and white can also enhance contrast in a certain way (e.g; someone's sunken cheeks would seem even more so in B&W) compared to a full spectrum of colour.

    It's a toss up between The Hangover, Inside Out and Signs

    Inside Out is so far the first and only Pixar / Disney movie I found really difficult to watch - it felt drawn out, boring and flat. Wonderful colours and animation, but story line seemed very one dimensional.

    Hangover felt contrived, tasteless with childish immature humour and and one of the least funny 'comedy' movies I've ever seen.

    Signs I stopped watching after 20 minutes.

    mine was Next with I think Nicholas Cage, felt like a good movie all in all until the ending where basically half the movie was just a dream, bear in mind I was in my teens and just spend two hours focused on a nice action movie only to find out it wasn't "real".

    Lucifier - just plain boring
    3% - a soap opera with a plot written 5 minutes before filming
    The Witcher- can an action series be slower? Literally watched a few episode resting on FF, haven’t missed a thing. Gave up after the third episode
    Deadpool- couldn’t understand why it’s gotten past pilot
    Grown ups2 - so much worse than the first one.

    Norbit is the worst movie I have seen and I hated it so much I stopped watching movies for about three years after because I couldn't risk wasting that much of my life again.

      Hahaha - I remember attending one of those midnight movie marathons yonks ago, where this was the second movie, and the "new release" movie we were really wanting to see was on after this. Sat through whatever was on first, then this steaming pile of crap started - couldn't stand it - ended up leaving and missing the movie we were there to see (and I've never gone near an Eddie Murphy movie since).

      I was thinking "there's only one movie I've ever walked out of the cinema on" which I can't even remember the name of (it was a free preview screening too, where I'd normally be a bit more tolerant given it's free!), but then I saw the word "Norbit" and the horrible memories came flooding back.

    David lynch Inland empire:that movie is so over hyped. I think he tried to make it too intellectual. It did not make sense to me and big waste of time. I went to watch the movie with a girl who was big into Lynch movies. Big mistake. That's how you learn

      I hated Inland Empire the first time I saw it but the second time got into it somewhat because I didn’t try to understand it and let the scenes play out like little episodes. That’s funny about going on a date to see a David Lynch movie because one of my girlfriends broke up with me a day after I took her to see Lost Highway. I always blamed it.

    The Happening and the most recent Fantastic 4. Strangely the cinema got evacuated halfway through Fantastic 4. I've never walked out of a movie before, but Fantastic 4 was the closest I've been. Thankfully the fire alarm decided for me.

    Meet Joe Black was the longest and least interesting film I have ever seen. In hindsight, I don't know why I watched it til the end. The official run time is 3h1m, but it'll feel like you've been sitting there for 7 or 8. (Note not literally longest film I have seen, just most boring)

      Cats - I watched 4 minutes before I had to turn it off. They tried to put almost normal human faces on cat bodies (presumably so that viewers would recognize the celeb actors they used), whereas the stage productions had far more cat-like faces (big whiskers, large black noses). The result is the movie is very "uncanny valley", and indeed it's actually listed as an example of the problem on the Wikipedia page on the topic.

    Wrinkle in Time (2018) - was stuck on a plane back precovid when we were allowed to travel, it was a new release at the time - I started it, didn't get good, but forced myself thinking it would, and it never got good. Couldn't look up reviews either halfway to see if there was a twist in the movie.
    I'm not the kind to fall asleep in any movies but it was a constant struggle. Also never had a 'bad' experience watching a movie, but this one just made me angry and restless. Never happened before, and never since - just do not recommend this movie at all 🤣

    Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: it actually made me feel ill watching it.

    And for some reason I really hated:
    'Drive' with Ryan Gosling.

      I gotta agree with you on this one, I watched Joker and kept watching it thinking something interesting would happen. I had to split the movie into two different days since it dragged on for me. But many friend raved about it however they were superhero fans.

        There are very few films I stop watching part way through, but Joker was one and I can't bring myself to go back to it.

        I don't even think it's about being a superhero fan, as I think I'm a big one. I tend towards Marvel, but will definitely see DC movies at the cinema.

        However, since Suicide Squad I've gone into most DC movies with high hopes that they have come back to the quality they should be and been very disappointing. Even Wonderwoman and Aquaman, to me they were OK movies, but nothing special.

        Contrast that with Marvel. There are several films I thought would be huge mistakes which might kill the momentum and they come out with some of the best in the series - Guardians (a no name team that even many Marvel fans didn't know much of), Ant-Man (assumed it would be based on Pym which puts him in similar tropes to Iron-man/Mr Fantastic), and Dr Strange I thought they couldn't pull off the effects to do it justice).

        Not saying Marvel can do no wrong, but each DC film release disappoints me further. Not too impressed with the new Batman trailer either. Didn't have a problem with Rob in the role…until I saw the trailer.

          Joker was not a comic book film.

          It was a simple character drama, in the vein of Taxi Driver and King of Comedy - it just happened to use Joker as a character (probably simply to cash in on the brand recognition). It was okay, but nothing incredible. But at least it wasn't another generic god awful DC/Marvel super hero nonsense.

    I watched The Cleveland Abduction the other day and I found it really unenjoyable. I 'get' that it is meant to be dark and grim but I felt like it didn't have any redeeming qualities, it was just dirty. In contrast, Room followed a similar story line and I quite liked this movie, so I am not opposed to the subject, and now that I think about the themes further I quite like a lot of films in this genre incl. Split, 10 Cloverfield Lane.

      I seriously don't understand all the praise this film gets. It looked good but the story was garbage. They went to one place being chased all the way, nothing really there, turn around and get chased all the way back to where they started. And the title character does very little. Mad Max has become like The Terminator. Watch and love the first two but ignore the ones that follow.

        The film was a visually stunning and a technical feat, but it's not rewatchable, and it didn't leave me wanting more. I still enjoyed it, but once was enough.

        The whole story when you step back and look at it, were bare bones. All the character were 1 dimensional, and there wasn't any real or convincing no growth or change to the characters.

        Mad Max was great. Mad Max 2 was brilliant. Thunderdome is still pretty good. I don't think Fury Road belongs in the Mad Max universe though.

    I can see what he was going for, good idea, just much too dense for the vast majority of the audience to "get", and that's why it seems pretentious. I'm not going to watch it, too dense for me.

        I 100% agree with you. I only included the information above because that's the difference between something being pretentious (something pretending to be more complex or insightful than it really is) and something that's just too dense and niche.

        Either the filmmakers had no intention of making their messages in this film accessible to people like you and I, or they weren't skilled enough to make it accessible.

        So in my opinion it's either a film with a niche audience (not you or me), or it's not made well enough (a bad film.)

    im thinking of ending things was a very sad movie, you have to watch the 2 or 3 explained videos on youtube to understand it, its very very sad reality for some people, its almost depressing. please do watch the explained video and you will understand it.

      You shouldn't have to watch/read further materials for a movie to make sense. Even after reading what it was all supposed to mean, I still regretted watching it because it just wasn't interesting at all. I feel like the trailer was a bait and switch.

      Have a look at the trailer and then explain to me why about an hour of the film (half the movie) is the two of them sitting in a car talking about pretentious crap. The trailer builds it up to be a thriller - "is she in danger?", "Why are his parents acting weird?" dramatic music

      If I wanted to watch something that made me think I would watch a documentary. I watch movies to be entertained, not be required to write an essay on the deeper meaning of it all in order to understand it.

        There's no way to advertise movies as either "Thinking Movies" or "Entertainment only" without sounding pretentious.

        Some people find thinking movies entertaining, and the film makers assume that thinking-movie types have the required background knowledge to understand all the subtext of the long conversations.

        I think it was too much subtext to expect audiences to get though, and if you don't get it, it's not thought provoking and interesting and entertainment, it's boring, like you said.

        Publishers and studios want more people to watch a movie, the director and writers often have zero input into the trailer, and so here we are.

          im in no way saying i liked the movie, but i get why someone would like it, its definitely not for everyone, but it shows the true nature of the world unfiltered and very very sad. the truth that one day we all die and there is no squeal. SPOILER ALERT: the girl was not real, she never existed, she was a figment of his imagination, he was a sad loner his whole life and he never took chances, he didn't ask that girl out in school, coz he was too scared and full of phobias. and she only existed in his thoughts. the whole movie needs to be watched from his perspective, he is the main character not her.

    Lord of the rings franchise, specially the hobbit. You don't need 3 movies to tell a short arc tbh.

    Not sure what puts me off this franchise, I got nothing against the mythology (i don't mind things like warcraft or warhammer). Only seen the LOTR franchise once when it released, always skip it when it's on TV.

      I had high expectations for the LOTR movies and they exceeded them. The movies are phenomenal and I've spent hundreds of dollars on them already (gold class tickets, dvd box sets, blu ray box sets, extended editions etc). Waiting for the 4K versions. All three LOTR movies are in IMDB's top 15 which says something.

      The Hobbit could have been a single movie, but became somewhat a vanity project. There was so much rubbish filler in those 3 movies, I felt like I wasted my time sitting through the whole ordeal.

      On the other hand, LOTR needed the 3 movies. The theatrical release was good enough. The extended version was becoming a drag. The main story arc ended up meandering around a bit too much.

      If they wanted to explore the Tolkien world, do a mini series with side stories.

    So glad it's not just me who thought "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" was overrated (only found one negative review on Rotten Tomatoes). I knew being written by Charlie Kaufman that it could be a hard slog, but too much talking and not enough action (can't fault the cast though). Added to my list of "never again" movies along with "2001 A Space Odyssey", "All Is Lost", "Hateful Eight", "Social Network" and many other supposedly great movies that bored me rigid.
