Looking for NAS drives and stumbled across this. From some quick reading they're good (fast, CMR/PMR, reliable) but potentially run hot and loud.

  • Can i just use this to run Windows 10 on a normal desktop PC?

It's rather loud so not recommended at all. Also SSD's are much better for running Windows 10.

These disks are more meant to be in a NAS in a closet or something.

      • Okay. probably won't go for it then.

      • This disk doesn't run loud at all - I was worried as it's in my bedroom desktop, but it's stupidly quiet. I game on it, I copy stuff to and from it, whisper quiet.
I will certainly be getting more of them to complement my SSD OS drive.

        I haven't had a summer with it yet…..

But much quieter than my cheap arse st2000DM001 seagate.

  • I have 1 of these in my Synology nas and it always idle in 30โ€™C+ in winter. I canโ€™t imagine what they are in summer, will have to keep an eye on it.

This looks like its a Hitachi HDD, the good ones. Retained the names of the products after being bought over by WD. Better quality than regular WD.

    • Yes, the 7200 RPM full speed good one,and no smr.

      • Used to work in WD R&D on Black drives, and I must say,Hitachi Ultrastars were top of the market for enterprise hdds in terms of reliability and production yields.

Be warned - the warranty on these is questionable when checking serial numbers online so whilst you are buying an enterprise grade drive, I wouldn't be banking on the warranty support in the future. Check previous threads on OzB for info.

(that all being said I have one of these and works fine. Came in an antistatic bag with two pieces of moulded plastic on each side in a nondescript brown cardboard box (not Amazon's usual thick boxes)

    • Hi jace88
How noisy are these?. Iโ€™m planning to use them for my NAS. But my NAS is located in the living room.
      thanks in advance,

It's loud for a hard drie but guess it also depends on your use case. If you're sensitive it might bother you but you might just get used to it. Some peope also found that using an SSD cache alleviates the noise.

Sorry just spotted all the typos. I am still getting used to the cramped keyboard on my Chromebook Duet (from another OzB deal lol)

I'm sitting near the NAS today though and maybe I'm just used to it, but it doesn't bother me. Depends how noisy your house is as well I suppose. I'd imagine if you've got a home theatre room with sound insulation/deadening/etc the noise would probably be noticeable and disruptive but living in an apartment near the city means there's always ambient noise of sorts.

I've got a few of the 14TB Ultrastars and they do run quite a bit hotter than Ironwolf drives but they are quieter on idle but louder when copying. Probably the fastest copying speed for a HDD out there though. Also quicker to spool up. Not sure how much difference between the 8TB but wouldn't be much.

    • Interesting, i need at 8tb to finish my storage pool. 3x8tb ironwolfs at the moment but don't want a drive that is noisier.

  • hi just wondering can i use this drive for surveillance cctv system ?

    • There's nothing better. 550TB per year rated drive, only the Seagate Exos matches it. Even Surveillance drives from the same companies are only rated to 180TB a year. With all the same features as them for longevity and frame skipping.

  • I'm surprised this doesn't have more votes. This is really an amazingly good deal. The disk is super quiet - i run this in my bedroom.
I'm planning on getting more, only have 1 at the moment.
