Stanley 500/1000A Jump Starter + 120PSI Compressor + 12V/USB Charger $99 (from $299) + S&H @ Kogan

132

Pricehipster indicates Kogan started selling it for $299 in July, then discounted to $149 for the 1st couple of weeks of August, and now down to $99. No idea if it is any good. Having a jump starter and a compressor seems convenient for not having to carry both in the boot (and perhaps consolidating the expense), just not sure it can do both well in one neat little package.

Offers both 12-volt and USB outlets to charge personal electronics
High-powered LED light that rotates 270°
120 Psi compressor with Backlight Gauge
Heavy-duty brass tipped SureFit compressor nozzle securely connects to tire valve stems
Reverse polarity alarm to alert when there is an improper connection
Power and charge indicator
All metal powder coated clamps
Built-in 120V AC charger recharges unit with a standard household extension cord

    Would the battery still be ok? One of the photos looks like it is charging a iphone 3 or 4 so it must be a really old model.

    Lol! What's this for? To jump start a truck? If you're after a car one then just get the gooloo battery powered one and free up what would otherwise been the whole boot taken up by this.

    • It looks like most of that space is for the air compressor.

    "Charger/adapter 120VAC"

    Does that mean is a US model?

    Crikey the reviews aren't great….https://www.stanleytools.com/products/automotive-tools/power/power-station/500-instant-1000-peak-amp-jump-starter-with-compressor/j5c09

    I bought it from Supercheap Auto before and returned it in 2 days due to a problem that could not be charged. I tested it for a while at the time, and the quality was average below the price. The problem is that you have to purchase through Kogan at the moment, which would be a nightmare if there was a problem with the product.

    These lead acid style jumpers are junk and should stay back in the last century. They will be flat by the time you need to charge your flat battery. The tiny Lithium Ion style are better in every possible metric. Even the $30 eBay specials (pre covid) are exponentially better than this.

    • Do you have a link for a $30 air compressor?

        • REALLY worth doing the 2 piston one for an extra few bucks,

          https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-12v-70l-min-145psi-twin-cy…

          It's not just that it theoretically flows faster (although, that IS a big deal).
          It's that to pump the same amount, the piston is doing exactly 50% of the duty cycle of the single piston; meaning if you use it often, it stays cooler, wears less, and just operates much better.

          • @MasterScythe: Two pistons worth (almost) twice the price?

            "better" = faster?

            • @wisdomtooth: Obviously; 35L vs 70L per minute.
              Remember, that's unloaded too; these can take a LONG time to fill a vehicle tyre.

              And half the duty cycle on the components.

              • @MasterScythe: Do you mean it lasts twice as long? But how long do they last anyway? Is it like 10 vs 20 years?

                • +2

                  @wisdomtooth: I mean, possibly?

                  But it's more about the duty cycle of a power tool.
                  A lot of these small compressors have less than 50% duty cycle, which means it should really only be doing work, for 50% of the time it's plugged in (so, 30 seconds of every minute, for example).
                  Practically nobody follows those ratings, but it's what they're intended for; to allow cooling and such.

                  By making each piston do 50% of the work it normally would need to do, you're halving the wear.

                  Honestly, that explanation was worth more than the sub-$30 it costs to get the better one ><

          Needs to be connected to a car to run. Won't jump-start your car.

    120V, no thank you. I neg to warn other that you cannot recharge this unit in Australia unless you have got a step down transformer.

    • Good catch!
      That said;
      The battery can be recharged using either the Built-In 120 Volt AC Charger or the DC Charging Adapter
      That doodad is sold separately, but if you're comfortable with DC chargers, super easy to quickly whip one up (manual says it's a basic barrel connector)

      Very good saving IF you know how to make a charger.

      I wonder how many people will buy this thing and release the magic smoke when they plug it into their 240V outlet at home.

      • They'd have to bend the 2 straight prongs to do that.

        EDIT: actually no, its meant to connect to an IEC hmmmm

  • 120Volt what the H.

  • Launched in July? With photos including an iPhone 4? LOL!

    Looks identical to this one reviewed on YT in 2014
