  • OK so I did it, and my current provider is more expensive… so what next, do you have to call Globird?

    • Use the referral link in the deal to sign up and switch to GloBird. You'll get $50 credit.

    • I think your currrent supplier has to be cheaper. So Globird can beat it.

  • +7

In case anyone wants to know it doesn’t include solar feed in tariffs

  • +8

I know this site is all about deals, but these guys only get 1.5 stars on the Green Electricity Guide, FWIW.

    • +1

The gold standard for electricity retailers is if they receive the Diji1 seal of approval.

    • +1

      How does this work?
I thought all electricity was bought wholesale then sold retail.
Aren't these companies getting it from the same places?

      • +1

Yeah, I had a good look and have to say I can't understand how the green electricity scores work at all. Money talks.

      • I was referring to the guide at www.greenelectricityguide.org.au, which is apparently out of date. However, I had a look at Glo Bird's site and it still appears, as per the 2018 report, that they do not offer green power or other carbon offsets.

      • You're correct

Source: I work in the industry

  • +17

The privatisation of electricity has been horrible.

The number of cold calls, analysis paralysis to “choose” a retailer then having to recheck you’re still on a good deal.

  • +3

How do you actually get them to do this? I've gotten a quote and they're more expensive than powerclub

    • I'm curious as well cause I moved away from them to Powerclub cause they were so much more expensive now. One year ago they were the cheapest with the highest solar FIT.

  • +1

    So I compared and :
YOUR BILL WILL INCREASE BY 1,513.2%

Where is the actual statement that they will give you the $100, unsure how to get them to actually pay out?

    • I got 40.1%

    • Just a clarification, I didn't read the HUGE text on the front page saying they will pay you… still unsure how to get them to actually do that though.

      • +1

What retailer are you with if these guys are that much more expensive?

        • I am with Momentum, granted the price is only so good thanks to their higher Solar Feed-In Tariff.

The terms and conditions say it doesn't count "Solar Credits" that might count feed-in tariffs? But it does say it counts any regular discounts (which I feel solar feed in is a regular discount), might be able to argue one way or the other?

          • @TheIronDuckling: You have no chance. They are saying their usage rates are better with no solar included. Solar feed in is a credit for the solar you've fed in, not a discount otherwise people couldn't get credits on their bill.

Interested if anyone has a deal that qualifies for the $100 based on usage rates only.

            • @thestig: Yeah probably not, but emailed them anyway, maybe they might haggle a deal that works for me. Either way it confirmed that I'm happy with my current plan

            • @thestig:

Interested if anyone has a deal that qualifies for the $100 based on usage rates only.

I don’t have solar and mine was 40.1% cheaper.

              • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Who are you with? I might change to them!

                • +2
                  • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Just had a look at them, their rates seem pretty good except their solar tarrifs are only 7.8c/kw

                    • @[Deactivated]: Solar tariffs are all wholesale and it says they guarantee at least 10.2c/kWh in VIC.

In VIC we pay out the government minimum FiT of 10.2¢/kWh. Because Amber's real-time FiT varies based on the market value of energy, we calculate your minimum FiT based on the yearly average FiT you earned for your exports in each financial year. If the true market value of your exports was lower than 10.2¢/kWh on average over the financial year, we'll top you up to a FiT of 10.2¢/kWh on June 30, 2021.

                  • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: How long did you wait for connected to Amber ..Seems a long waiting period time

    • My increase would be 60.3%, mainly due to better solar feed in tariff with my current provider. They want you to give them a call to haggle.

      • Yeah their lower Solar feed in is the killer for them from my side as well

I was previously with Globird for over a year plus, except for one incident that put me off for good. In Dec 2019 they raised my rates by 27%, and in Feb 2020 when I started looking around again I found my rates I'm paying is 31% higher compared with new rates available for new customers on the website.

I contacted them and they said I needed to contact them to be on the new rates. To me it felt like bait and switch, lure you in with lower rates, a year later increase by 30%, then still offer the low rates to new customers.

    • +4

yes but importantly every other reseller upped their price 30-60% too. each month I receive my bill, I automatically forward it back to customer service advising it's too expensive and the govco comparison website says there are better deals - each month i've received a cheaper deal (both elec & gas). it takes 30sec to copy/paste the same email monthly.

      • +2

        care to share?

        • what, the text? sure… but it's nothing revolutionary

          "Hello,

Received my monthly bill and after the initial horror, I've used the Victorian Energy Compare website where it demonstrated better deals are to had elsewhere for electricity and gas. It also highlighted alternative offers from GloBird.

As there are greater savings to be had, could you please review my existing tariffs and apply your best rates and largest discount please. Appreciate your support, welcome to call with any queries on 04xx"

          Regards,"

      • Also would like it

      • I did this (using my own script) and it really worked. Thank you very much.

    • +2

I had the exact same experience!!
Energy providers are absolutely woeful….pricing should just be set for everyone, and fluid for everyone.
I had their big price rise too but now they seem to be one of the cheapest again!

    • -2

Every utility company, insurance company, bank etc. does this

      • +1

Every utility company, insurance company, bank etc. does this

Wrong, some energy/gas companies don’t raise their prices at all and majority of banks don’t raise fees either.

        • That's an absurd claim. Yes, every single utility company has raised their prices over time. They have to, because their wholesale costs have risen over time… name ONE that hasn't raised their prices in 10 years. Just one.

Banks as a matter of general practice give their best offer to new customers. They give either nothing or the bare minimum to existing customers, because they know most won't be bothered to switch.

          • @sareth:

name ONE that hasn't raised their prices in 10 years.

So you went from 1 year to 10 years?

            • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Quote me where I said "1 year".

              • @sareth:

I was previously with Globird for over a year plus, except for one incident that put me off for good. In Dec 2019 they raised my rates by 27%

You replied to a comment referring to the rate increase of 1-3 years not 10 years.

                • -1

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Yep. So? I didn't say anything about a specific time frame.

                  • @sareth: Well if you were to reply to that comment it would be assumed you were referring to the specific time frame stated in the comment.

          • @sareth: I was with momentum for years and I was on their best price until a year ago when they said they couldn’t match the new offer.

      • +1

I've consolidated every utility bill, usage + rates, going back mid 2018, water, gas, electric, internet, phone, mortgage, insurance. NONE of them have raised prices in a similar fashion. In fact none of them have increased in prices except for gas and insurance.

Insurance has raised prices by a few dollars each year, AND the prices are consistent for new customers as well, and its not a 30% increase.

I have a single raise on gas bill back in Dec 2018 and that's about it - and I checked that rate is also the same for new customers regularly.

    • oh also, i changed to Elysian energy, I consolidated my usage last 18 months, and compared all the energy companies out there. Elysian was the cheapest for me, although their pricing structure was a bit weird.

I compared globird recent rates with Elysian, they're comparable (for now)

  • From the terms:

For residential customers only where electricity usage is less than 600kWh per month

    • that is bad, we are around 900kWh per month :-(

  • I’m on the easysave combo since 6/8/19 which has continued to be the cheapest plan.My last bill was $102 for electricity 409.39 kw and $34 for gas 890.76 mj. We are a couple with a 2.5 yr old. As I have just gone over the one year mark I’ll be interested to see what the next bill will be like. So far the only problem I had with them was being able to unzip my bill on my phone, which they sorted out.

  • I've just asked how to claim the $100 hehe

  • +2

I sent mine in by email and sms and I'm yet to hear anything 4 hours later…

    • Me too… let's see what happens

    • Tried SMS but it said “unable to send, invalid number”.

  • +2

I would stay far away from GloBird. They are effectively a "bait and switch" scam, advertising low rates to attract new customers when wholesale prices are low; then increasing those rates by massive percentages a few months later.

  • What's the difference between Glosave and Suresave? They're definitely a lot cheaper than Red right now

    • Different plans (depending on how much you use). Comparison Note: kWh usage and pricing is yearly not monthly.

      • Is that fixed rate or peak/off peak? I was also looking at Amber before but it seems like you have to monitor your usage throughout the day to really make the most of it (going off what people said on whirlpool)

        • Comparison doesn’t say whether it is on or off peak. And yes it’s best to monitor your usage throughout they day to make the most of the savings, we don’t usually have to worry about that though as it’s usually 19c however the highest we’ve seen so far is 23c.

  • which provider is cheapest for gas in VIC? I am currently with globird, and it is quite pricey!

  • For those commentating on Amber - I had the opportunity to join but got turned off after some reading at whirlpool. Apparently it can be cheaper for 11/12 months of the year, but if they have a couple of crazy days / huge load increases your savings are basically wiped out and it’s a nil sum game, maybe even more expensive. Anyone confirm?

    • Nope, in my experience it hovers around 19-23c never seen any hugely expensive numbers. They also guarantee you won’t pay more than the VDO (Victorian Default Offer).

      • Merci. Have you saved a stack compared to your old provider?

        • Haven’t compared yet but the rates were much lower than our previous providers (Red Energy/Powershop).

  • +1

    Anyone for Tango here!?

They seem like unsung heros for electricity supply, at least in Vic.

No tiers for pricing. Low prices without discounts. I've had no price increase in 18 months. Repeat comparisons have had them the lowest, including comparisons with the wholesale companies (e.g. Amber)

    • Just checked and the rates are actually dearer when you compare ambers average (19-20c).

      • My rate is 18.634 c/kWh average.
        Supply is 105.6 c/day

I'm not sure if these rates are grandfathered from when I signed up, because I noticed my most recent comparisons had different rates. But Tango advertises different rates than Victorian Energy Compare, so it might require clarification by calling Tango. I recommend if your price comparison with Tango is close, because they can probably beat your current supplier.

        • On there website it says they’re currently offering 21c/kWh…

          • @WoodYouLikeSomeCash:

But Tango advertises different rates than Victorian Energy Compare, so it might require clarification by calling Tango

I know. It doesn't look right. It deserves a call…

            • @muwu: Yeah, thanks for your advice, might send them an email :)

              • +1

                @WoodYouLikeSomeCash: 👍

It might not be cheaper for your specific address, but my guess is it will at least be very close.

          • +1

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: I did a comparison of my current Tango bill with Amber this morning, based on your recommendation (I've done a price comparison with another wholesale supplier a few months ago and Tango was cheaper).

Amber was 6% more expensive. Very close, but Tango is also stable with it's pricing.

            • @angelkulit025: Maybe they have gone up a bit since I signed up 18mo ago.

And I'm just grandfathered and might have a price hike soon at my two year anniversary. I could be switching soon…?

    • I used to be with Tango but I received some steep price hikes recently and they ended up being more expensive than a few places. On a direct comparison basis, Kogan offers me much better rates, let alone some of the other cheaper wholesale ones.

      • Thanks for the recommendation. I just did a quick comparison and, for me, Kogan is ~11% more expensive than Tango.

But I'll keep an eye out for any price hikes from Tango!

How long were you with Tango before they hiked prices? (I've been with them 18mo)
        How did they notify you?

        • +1

2 years almost exactly (in fact, seems pretty likely) for the price hike.

I received an email with a policy update advising me of the update and that it would auto-update.

          "
Your fixed price Benefit Period is ending
Your electricity prices are changing as your Benefit Period, which provided you with fixed
electricity prices, ends on 09/04/2020. We have attached details of the new rates that will apply
          from 10/04/2020 (New Offer).
What the New Offer means for you
Based on your past usage, we estimate you’ll pay $442.15 more, inclusive of GST, per year after
the New Offer takes effect. Keep in mind this estimate may vary if your usage or energy plan
          changes.
          "

          • @DingoBilly: Thank-you!

My eyes are now well and truly peeled come December (2 years)

      • I'm previously with Tango as well but since introducing some new rates i have switched to Kogan energy and gas. I'm looking at this Globird deal and inputting our current rates and usage, Globird will save us 10% for Electricity and just 3.8% for gas. Do you think its worth switching considering the few comments on how dodgy their experiences are with this said reseller?

        • Yes, for the the cost savings.

No, if potentially having to make a switch in 12mo is too much of a hindrance.

          I recommend: https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/
To make sure there isn't someone even better than Glo Bird.

        • I'd also recommend separating your energy suppliers, i.e. one supplier for electricity and one supplier for gas.

A lot of suppliers offer discounts for combining the two utilities with one provider, but most the time it is more economical to split the utilities to the suppliers with the lowest rates for your particular address.

          • @muwu: i did that before,, one with Tango and one with Red energy. Switching both with Kogan saves us a lot just by basing it from the current rates and supply charge. So i'm happy with them until this Globird shows up,,lol

    • Love Tango!

we are on 16.3c per kwh and 100 cents per day incl GST.

They have always been really transparent and way cheaper than any other quote for inner melbs.

      • Fantastic rates. I should move to your suburb…

        • Richmond, VIC 3121 FYI

    • they just emailed me telling me my rates were going up 10% basically. So just another typical joke elec retailer

      • How long have you been with Tango before this price increase?

        • not exactly sure
          year maybe

          • @taoz: I've been with them 21 months, no increase yet.

A gent above commented that the increase came around the 2 year mark.

Would love to know if you've been with them as long as 2 years.

            • +1

@muwu: just looked at my records, have some from 2018, so must be atleast 2 years.

              • @taoz: Thanks mate 👍
