First post - hopefully got everything in order.

Amazon deal of the day

I've been keeping a track of these on Camel^3 for a while, but was hoping for the black version, only walnut is on sale - hopefully this is still of use to someone. The standard price on Amazon AU lately has been $200. This is the cheapest it's been since the last deal ~3 months ago which was potentially an all time low

Gets a good rap from Zeos (for the price)

Was waiting for you to turn up after your efforts on the last thread - welcome!

Do you go test drive Corollas and tell the salesman that a Lambo is better?

Look - for the price these are pretty good. I have some decent KEFs in the living room but was looking for something for relatively near-field usage in the office. I have audienced these at a mates place who is a producer and has some pretty bloody expensive Genalecs next to them. The Edifiers are definitely no match, but they're definitely not 20 times worse as the price would suggest.

        • +23

I guess I'm lucky I don't have the "golden" ears lol. I can't hear the difference.
I "can" afford good bookshelf speaker but I "won't" because I "can't" hear the difference

            • +3

@mlburnian: Not true. I have had Focals. Appreciated the setup. But these "cheap" ones are good for tv, plugging phone via AUX etc. In fact, when we go on boat trips, all just use the "cheap" portable BT ones.

Edifier, in fact, are not bad for what they cost.

Edit. And a set of Boston Accoustics too…

@[Deactivated]: Problem is people on here thing these are good for music. I don't understand the concept of sounds good for the price, it either sounds good or it doesn't…music doesn't sound good on these. The analogy with cars is a moot point, as you only need to spend another 400 bucks to get very good sounding 2.0 system

                • +6

@mlburnian: Another 400 bucks would be 3.5x the price, not a particularly fair comparison. If there is a good deal on a pair of bookshelf speakers that you would recommend, perhaps you could post that as a deal?

                • +10

                  @mlburnian:

, as you only need to spend another 400 bucks to get very good sounding 2.0 system

It's all relative to someone's budget and music expectations

The fact you think 500-600 bucks gets you a very good sounding 2.0 system would have plenty of people with actual high end systems telling you that 'I don't understand how you can think that's good for music and sounds good'.

You think a $500 system sounds good for music, someone here will appreciate these and think they sound good, and others might have a several thousand dollar system and think yours sounds terrible.

Personally I wouldn't take any 'golden ear' opinions from someone who thinks a 500 buck 2.0 system is actually 'good' in the realm of audio setups.

"If you can't afford good bookshelf speakers, then obviously ignore my comment"

                      :)

                  • @SBOB: Good comment, and factual. I never understood why some pay $3-500 for a pair of 2.0 when they are equally bad (Focal/Boston Acoustics days) as the logitech stuff.

Not until my ex-boss asked me why spend the few thousand dollars when the same can be had from a $200 set logitech. He then goes on to explain how his floor standing units are "limited" , "engineered" , and enclosure is hand crafted - all didnt make much sense to me. All in all, he's a different league, anything less than 6 digits is an insult to his ears.

P.S. These days, still using the pretty looking Harman Kardon Soundsticks from many years ago. High note might not be accurate, nor low is accurate and punchy, but hey, it works.

                • +2

@mlburnian: Cool bro. Then you have a long way to go. My boss in NY blows half a mio on set up at home. Anything less, don't insult his ears… people will laugh at you when you tell them about KEF or Boston Acoustics.

P.S. heard it once, definitely good. But my ears are not trained enough to tell the major difference.

                  • -2

@[Deactivated]: Not sure how this turned into a pi$$ing contest, I was telling people that for few hundred more you can get much better sound. It's common sense that if you can afford 150 bucks you can most probably afford few hundred more. Obviously the return diminishes as you go into the thousands.
The people bringing in high end systems clearly missed the point.
                    Here's a good starting point

                  • -2

@[Deactivated]: U can laugh all you want…I won't be able to hear you over my 2.0s

                • @mlburnian: Good for the price means what you can get for the limited money.

If you spend a mil, that system will blow away your KEFs of the world. Does that make KEF 50 worthless as per audio reproduction?

          • @oranglama: I think price always plays a factor . Bang for Buck / value for quality etc etc. Everyone has a budget / limit and they want to get the best they can for that price. Saying that, I think also when it comes to hearing the difference, its never instant, or hardly ever anyway. A lot of the times its about training / tuning your ear to better quality, over time your ear will learn to appreciate and comprehend the better quality sounds, THEN when you go back to equipment which doesnt sound as good, it will be very noticeable and instant.

            • @lonewolf: ;) need to be re-trained for the sht stuff. More so these days for wfh conference calls - the free handsfree came with the phone would do fine.

        • +1

you are right these are really not in the same league as my Klipsch Lascalar's but my Klipsch take a little too much room on my desk so the Edifiers will do.

    • What speakers did you upgrade to?

Dual RCA output - so these would work for record player via preamp? I.e. record player > preamp > these guys?

And would dual RCA mean 2xR,2xL, or 1xR+L?

Forgive my ignorance, trying to drag myself into some form of understanding about these things.

    • +11

Ah, clicking the link reveals answers to these questions! Who would have thought…

    • +2

      Yes, dual RCA inputs.

That is exactly what I do. TT > Preamp > Edifier Speakers.

      • which pre-amp? cheers

        • skip the 'pre' and just treat yourself to an AMP !

          • @darkmoss: I've already got an amp….Rotel rx303…. Can't figure out how to connect to my edifier speakers.

            • @clandestino: @clandestino Ah I get where your problem is. You use a vintage amp like myself. (I use a Sansui AU-505). On these vintage models, there is no 'line out' as modern amps, so the only way to connect is via the 'headphone' output on the front.

You should double check your headphone output size but you will likely need a '3.5mm Socket Female to 6.35mm 1/4-Inch Jack Plug Male Stereo Audio Adaptor' and a '3.5 mm to RCA cable'.

              Hope this helps.

  • +2

Thanks op, good value for money

I have these and I absolutely love them! They look classy too. Slightly light on the bass for my tastes but still very solid sound. I also then bought the s350db for another room. Also phenomenal for the price.

  • +3

Are these better than the R1280DB which occasionally sneak under a hundred dollars? Comparing the specs they seem much of a muchness, or have I missed a critical difference?

    • Following

    • Me too

    • These are slightly more powerful. Is that it?

    • The 1280 has a narrower response (75-18,000 Hz) compared to the 1850 and 1700 (60-20,000 Hz).

    • I read a review that said these are slightly bigger for one of the drivers so technically are better, however the performance is pretty similar and the difference in looks is most likely to be the deciding factor.

I have the R1280DB and very happy with them

    • R1280DB have optical in. Cleanest input.

  • +5

I've reporteed you to the mods OP, you forgot one essential point:
    "First post, please be nice"

    Seriosuly great work.

    • +1

Damn I knew I forgot something

  • +3

    I have these. They're great.

  • +4

I have these too, this is a great price!

  • +4

I have these too. Very impressive for the price!

  • Got one. Thanks

  • These or the 1850DB for a PC?

    • hey champ. The first review listed by top on usa amazon (R1850DB) makes this comparison, it may be helpful.

      • Thanks. Got the 1850DB as it has more connection options and room for expansion in future. Also looks like it has marginally better sound. It also looks better with my setup.

  • Can i connect this too a TV to act as a soundbar?

    • Yep works well as speakers for a tv. Way better than inbuilt

  • Would these be a step up from 10 year old Logitech speakers (x230)?

  • Just got one! I've been waiting for a pair of Edifiers at the right price. This was definitely a great discount. Thanks OP!

  • Are these good for the theatre room to hook up to a projector?

  • Sort of thinking i replace my z623 with these but not really sure how much of a difference it will make the damn things won't die… sort of hard explaining to mum my purchase.

    • +1

hey champ. If you check out the usa amazon reviews for the R1850DB, the second review sorted by top, compares it to your z623's.

    • This doesn't have the subwoofer the z623 has though

  • Warning - Newbie Question: Can these be connected to a TV as an alternative to a soundbar? if so, by Bluetooth or a cable connection?

    • +1

Short answer : yes. Optical audio in works best, haven't tried automatically pairing Bluetooth to the speakers from tv but works from phones/laptops for single connection use.

Long answer: these take up 15cm on either side of a TV, which make for a pretty wide soundstage. I have them beside a 32" tv for close viewing and they work well but a wider tv would be different. If your tv is wall mounted above then no problem I guess

      • Thank you Jengel. My intended purpose is to have them either side of a 75" Panasonic TV. Or would you suggest an alternative speaker set-up perhaps?

        • +1

Wow yeah pretty wide. But if you only intend to sit in front, home-theatre style, it doesn't make too much of a difference. Being about 2.5m away would be ideal I think.
Surround sound with front soundbar/woofer would obviously be ideal but costs more, requires an audio controller and more space, etc.
These are a great product for the price as far as I've experienced anyway

    • +1

Just use the RCA. That's what I did. Easy. Great sound. They're not big so you should be able to position them fine.

  • I have these for my bedroom pc set up. Also watch a lot of TV shows and movies as well. They're amazing and have good enough bass for a bedroom. Love it

  • +1

I picked these speakers up direct from Edifier Australia for $139.99 back in April.
Excellent, clear and load speakers, great for the price and an awesome upgrade from my very old Logitech Z506.

  • These are fine as I have a pair. (I moved to a new state and needed something temporary). But IMO if you can be bothered and dont mind clutter at your desk. I would be a chifi amplifier and an old pair of bookshelf speakers that no one cares about like Wharfedale Diamond IIIs, this would all work out the same in price but it sounds a lot better to my ears.

    • which amplifier would you go for?

      topping or adsd etc?

      • idk eithers fine man its just an amp to get them bookshelves from the 90s going. I had a lepai that i was happy with and since moved onto expensive components but I really still like listening to that budget setup i had made

    • Or spend a bit more and get studio monitors and a DAC.

  • Can anyone confirm (for cashback purpose) if it’s home entertainment or electronics?

    • I think it is electronics

  • Nice speakers, thanks for sharing.

  • Price back to $197 : (…

    • +1

      Back to 148 again!

      • +1

just checked, its at $197.99 =(

  • These speakers are the absolute duck's nuts.
I only replaced them as my PC speakers when I went to a full hifi 5.1 system. The Edifiers are astonishing.
    Still worth it at $197.

  • Does it have blueteeth 5.0 for better sound quality?
