Same drive as inside this deal from earlier this week.

This deal comes with an extra 2 years warranty for $200~ (I believe it's possible to just register the serials of the drives inside the enclosures)

Someone pointed out that there's a good chance that the reason they're putting them into consumer grade usb cases, is because they didn't quite meet their quality requirements to match their enterprise level assurances. So take that as you will, as well.

      • Never heard of that in relation to HDDs so did a quick search but all I see is speculative random internet comment type stuff (apparently prevalent on Reddit's r/DataHoarder) mainly just extrapolating from the practice of CPU/GPU/RAM binning.

Oh it’s absolutely speculative, but you have to wonder why they would be selling these drives at a 30%+ discount if there was nothing wrong with them. Something to consider is all.

I’d say if you’re just using it as pure storage you’ll have no issues- I’m more worried towards the 24/7 on I’d personally be using it for

@ONEMariachi: One might conclude that the HDD manufacturer actually manufactures the drives far cheaper than what third party sellers charge for it at retail. Which can afford Seagate being able to place it inside of consumer grade HDD enclosures which are also made by Seagate too. Seagate controls the whole manufacturing chain and so the manufacturing price itself too. So i very much doubt that it has any thing to do with quality of the HDD but how much cheaper they can manufacture it for. You know the retail price jackup vs manufactured price. So it's not as if for Seagate itself being the actual manufacturer is costing them like say $600 to manufacture these. I doubt that it is even a third of it.

@ONEMariachi: Nah, almost no chance of binning on these considering they share exact model numbers. Only differences is warranty.

The reason for externals being so cheap is simply supply and demand. Oversupply of drives can easily be sold at a lower price in enclosures, and the markup initially is massive anyway, so there's plenty of margin to work with.

@runean: all of these opinions are just that, opinions too, no more substance to them than mine. All speculative.

@ONEMariachi: Whilst there's nothing conclusive to say one way or the other, I'm with you on this given the manufacturer has also given up their obligations to provide the same level of warranty as they normally do on the same drives, one can speculate over whether this is price discrimination or differentiation - but that's why we have redundancies :)

  • If that deal is same drive than definitely, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/559491 deal is no brainer.

Unfortunately expired. Next best option is the AU version at $475.
Can get free delivery with Prime, and can get extra 4% discount ($456) via gift cards at many insurance places. No cashback currently for hard drives, though.

  • Just wondering if these high capacity hard disk still works on external hdd docking station?

  • How's this one compare to WD Ultrastar? I bought 2 from one of the previous deals like the following when my Red was dying. Just installed them in my Synology and completed the lengthy parity checking, great but they are loud and can hear the vibration if I put on a mounted stack where it used to be with Red. Everything's perfect but the noise..

    • Which 2 did you buy? The WD or the Seagate? Curious about the noise. I've got a few 14TB WD and they've been pretty quiet and cool so far

      • I bought WD Ultrastar 8TB.

    • All enterprise drives are noisy. Plus 7200 speed and it will be a big difference to the WD Reds.

      • Yep, Thanks. I've figured. That's why I've locked it in the cabinet in the cold dry garage. I had it mounted near the doorway but not any more due to this reason.

Backblaze stats still do not let me use seagate drives and feel safe.

They all clearly work fine, and the failure rate is still "very low" for a mechanical product in the real world.

But compared to everyone else? Its shocking.

  • Are these drives loud? In comparison to the Ironwolf range?

    • Most helium drives are quite similar.

  • How does the warranty work if its imported from US?
