A DE safety razor is one of the better money savers if you're a man. Haven't used this particular razor but blades are dirt cheap so will pay for itself in no time.

  • +9

I have used a DE razor for decades.
Amazing how much quicker it is too shave over 5 blade bullsh!t.
edit: This is probably because I have course hair as per above.

    • +3

DE is also easier to clean …

      • How many times ive seen or heard of guys trying to bash and rinse hair clogged cartridge razors, to be told my de razor is old school grandpa style .. lol

    • +3

Is it really faster though as with a five blade safety razor it takes maybe two minutes for a full shave with no fear or slicing myself open. I would think with a DE you go a lot slower or does it just take a few practice runs?

      • +3

I agree, there are many advantages to a DE razor (cost and better quality shave being the main ones) but in my experience you can't add speed to that list. I can wizz a 5 blade over my face in 1 minute but to do a proper shave with a DE I need at least 5 minutes. DE shaving is about beard reduction (doing multiple passes with, across and sometimes against the grain) and also the blade requires a lot more rinsing.

      • +3

With the right blades I'm able to do 2 passes in about 3 mins which results in a much closer shave and literally no risk of cutting myself just gotta use the right blades

      • I just switched over to a DE razor last week. First shave i had a waterfall of blood running off my face, but im up to my 4th shave now and managed no cuts. It takes a little bit of practice to get the correct angle. I just need to work on my confidence to speed it up.

      • +1

I've been DE shaving for about 5 years now. Every now and then a friend ask me if it really is a better shave with less irritation etc etc (like the YouTubers would have you believe). My usual response is that it definitely isn't worse (if you were getting a good shave before, you can't really improve on that). But given that DE blades are about 20c each I can afford to replace them weekly, in which case it is a much better shave because at like $5 a pop I was hanging on to my old Gillette blades like they were a collectors item and tearing my face apart by the end of the month…

  • +1

Against my better judgement, I bought Aldi's "five blade" razor kit a few weeks ago. I've forgotten the brand name - Prince something?

Anyway, I've been a bit disappointed with the shave, although the kit was cheap (around $8 with a few blades).

How regularly are you switching over the blades on this unit?

    • +1

Really depends on the type of blade you use and the coarseness of your hair. I don't think I have particularly thick facial hair and most blades I've tried last between 5-8 shaves. This is shaving every second day.

    • It really depends, some people change their blades very frequently mainly because DE razor blades are so cheap in the first place.

Also, the brand type of DE razor blades matter as well. For example, Feather Razor Blades are "known" to be the sharpest DE razor blades out there and can be used many times before having to be replaced.

      • Does Aldi stock refills of these for once we get through the included 10?

        • -4

          lol

        • I get mine from ebay

        • Unlikely. Just buy somewhere online like beard and blade.

They’re about $15 for 100 blades for a brand like Astra, which will last you years. Others prefer Feather which are about $30 for 100.

          • +1

@thedragon: I found derby better than feather for me. Buy a pack of different blades.

            • +1

@Slippery Fish: @slippery fish: I agree 100%. My first buy was was one of those packs containing 5 brands of blades (and where I found Astra to be the best for me). I hear good things about Derby too.

    • +1

Aldi blades are pretty ordinary in my experience.

    • I would probably go at least two months before changing blades.
      I have course hair.

Is the Razor MADE IN CHINA or somewhere else?

    • +2

Unless it's being sold at a loss, the only place it could come from is China

      • Schick make Razors them in Mexico, South Korea, USA & China.

Are these really Made in CHINA?

    • +1

Great! So now people get downvoted for asking if a product is MADE IN CHINA.

    • no, its made in Antarctica.

      • -2

        No it's no.

        Schick doesn't manufacture there.

  • +2

I would recommend going DE for the cost shavings.

The combo I use and found to perform well on an OzBargainer budget is:

DE head taken from the Lord L6 which some reviews say is comparable to a Merkur but at a fraction of the cost. ~$8 from Amazon US Prime. I got mine when there was free shipping.

The handle taken from the Utopia Care DE razor set. I bought mine for ~$8 on Amazon Prime delivered. The handle has a nice weight and works well with the L6 head. The L6 had a handle which was too light and too long so it needed replacing.

  • -2

anyone looking for cheaper razors but not ready to go DE should look at the disposable 3 blade gillettes. they cost less than $1 each and are basically the same as mach3. some say they are even better because of the positioning of the pivot joint
and they rinse out just as easily, unlike many other disposable that prevent reuse
schick ones are okay too i guess

  • -3

ALDI, you get what you pay for…..

    • +13

Of course. You won't get what you didn't pay for.

      • +1

        This OzBargain

        • +2

          Yeah. Not OzCharity.

  • Quality…

  • Everything I've bought from Aldi has just been a waste of time and resources.. bordering on usable if lucky.

    • +4

Hope you have stopped going there.

    • +2

A lot of Aldi stuff is crap, much of it is very good.

Sounds like you’re not very good at judging one from the other.

  • Interested in the TV, but I know it's a rebadge…

Schick is the same company as Wilkinson Sword, this is the same razor:
    https://www.schick.com/us/en/wilkinson-sword/wilkinson-sword…

Check here for some Amazon UK reviews:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wilkinson-Sword-Classic-Double-Safe…

Beard and Blade sell it for $44.99:
    https://www.beardandblade.com.au/products/wilkinson-sword-pr…

My thoughts, butterfly is good for beginners, closed comb so better for those who shave more often, long handle could be annoying for anyone who has used DE before. Might buy it for my son as it looks like a good beginners razor handle.

With DE shaving your handle, blade, cream and brush come together as a system. Right now I use a Merkur 15C, with Feather blades, Body Shop shaving cream and a Yaqi Tuxedo Synthetic brush. If I change to a cream or soap with less glide that combination will cut my face up, so I'd have to go to a closed comb or less sharp blade. Takes a little while to work out what works for you, but then it's easy and I wouldn't go back to multiblade.

    • +1

Hopefully this holds the blade firmly in place and there's no play in it.

I have my doubts at this price point though.

Nothing could be worse for a beginner than trying to get consistent results from a razor that's not holding the blade exactly the same way each time you pick it up.

  • Pre-installed apps.: … Twitter

    Why?

  • +1

Not to detract from this post, however I had a look at the DE razor I have been using for prob ~10-15y
It is a Parker. It is very high quality. I purchased it as an cheaper alternative to Merkur and have high praise for it.
Very good weight (quite heavy). I doubt that this one will be heavy.
It is made in India and Parker has been made there for decades.

Mine is #6 on this top list of Razors.
    https://faveable.com/best-safety-razor

Can pe purchased for around $35 and I believe it will be much higher quality than this Schick.

  • +3

How do you safely dispose (recycle?) the used blades?

    • +2

I'm looking at making the switch to a DE razor and I am more than likely going to buy a blade bank or use some sort of rigid, puncture proof container. Not sure about recycling, but my local guides seems to point towards disposal at a sharps collection point. But Gillette now has a razor recycling program with Terracycle so I might give that a go.

      • Thank you guys, great ideas there. Terracycle seems to be open for any kind of blades/razors to send for recycling, will give them a try.

    • +2

      Great question!

I wrap the blade in the original wax paper wrapper and then a layer of packaging tape around it.

It will still be cutting fingers when the aliens dig it up in 2000 yrs.

  • Anyone use double edged too shave their head and not just face?

  • +1

$449 50" TV and everyone's talking about razors.

Is the TV usable? Are the panels in these ok? The App store is "NetRange", what's that like?

I want to replace our Sony TV which has a great panel and is otherwise shit. Can't add new apps, lousy slow software, occasionally crashes. Won't even play nice with the PS4… another Sony product.

    • +1

I would do a reset and get a chromecast or similar box for software
I doubt your Sony panel would be as low brightness as this one

      • This ^^^

    • Get a Vodafone TV or a Shield. The "Smart" functions of this TV won't be any good and neither will the speakers, so I'd expect to be adding an Android TV box and a sound bar if I bought it.

  • +3

Bought the razor today with the soap, brush and stand. The razor is slightly too tall for the stand and dangles a bit which isn't ideal. The brush is very stiff and barely lathers the soap at all. Can't say I didn't expect this. I just wanted the stand as they can go for $20+ and the set costed $9.99.

My first time shaving with a DE razor and only got 2 nicks so I'm happy with that. Shaves okay after 3 passes but then again I have no idea what I'm doing haha. Trying to maintain 30 degree angle, using no pressure and haven't tried going against the grain yet.

    • What's the build quality like of the razor?

      • +2

Late reply, sorry. It definitely feels closer to $30 in the hand. Heavy and the chrome plating is decent. The butterfly opening mechanism does feel a little light and insecure, otherwise it's a great quality for $17.

    • +2

Got this yesterday also, and tried this morning. Its not a bad deal, and the shave was ok with no nicks, and feel a very sharp blade would work in this. I did find myself going back to Edwin Jagger.

Build quality is OK for price. Looks very much like an old DE by Schick. It is a bit light as would be expected.

Blades look good quality, will test them further.

  • +1

Really like this and really wanted to use it - I remember watching my dad using something similar.

Unfortunately (probably due to my inexperience) I cut myself 4 or 5 times, even when going what I thought was extremely carefully. Had to wait 3 or 4 days for one of the cuts to heal.

    Any tips for newbies?

    • +3

Don't push the razor into your skin. Find the right angle and glide it along your skin.

Use plenty of water so that the shave cream is nice and slick.

      Watch sharpologist on YouTube.

      • Thanks, will take a look.

        • No worries.
Let us know if you have any issues.

    • +1

I bought one just to try it out. The handle is good but the blades are bloody awful. I've used DE shavers for years and it cut me up really bad with the included blade. With a feather blade it works really well, sharp but not aggressive and good for beginners. Grab a sample pack of blades from one of the online DE shops or eBay.
