I've shucked 2 of these and they contain the ST4000DM004 4TB Barracuda Compute - $159 at Umart: https://www.umart.com.au/Seagate-Barracuda-4TB-ST4000DM004-D…
I know they were $99 before COVID but $120 is pretty good and Officeworks will deliver for free within a couple of days, so you needn't wait for Amazon International.
Yes they are SMR and aren't for enterprise heavy write type applications, but for many this is fine and they have the advantage of being quiet and happily sleep when not in use which can be most of the time.
imo SMR for photos/Home Movies/Linux distros/docs are fine. Even for some Gaming (athough SSD is ideal), loading of maps etc is mainly large reads. Home theatre the same.
- If you want to load some games, load them first because the outside of the platter appears to be used first (tracks faster), so outperforms.
- Fill the whole disk and check for errors via USB before shucking in case you need to return it.
The write speeds I get from these things are pretty good and they didn't choke when filling them both in one hit.
I know many people love RAID, but RAID is not a real backup (e.g. if you were ransomwared). Sometimes it's safer to directly backup onto external USB disks like this and even take one off site to your mum's place.
Some sound data prepper advice there trevor99!!! XD
