      Haven't been able to tell with my older 5TB Seagate portables (Backup Plus containing ST5000LM000). They don't show TRIM support in CrystalDiskInfo which is supposedly a giveaway. I have a 4TB WD which does, though, and have observed slowdowns like this when copying to it.

        I have the same 5TB backup plus, it has a 128mb cache. Whereas SMR drives usually 64mb cache.

      Also there are rosebud drives as well and that is probably even crappier than SMR.

    Now been about three years with 5TB as the highest capacity for 2.5" portables and mine are finally full. At least people seem to be buying these which will hopefully demonstrate there's enough of a market for higher capacities.

      Yeah I think the industry has given up on 2.5 sadly. Gone the way of the smaller form factors before it.

      It's now 3.5 HDD, 2.5 SSD, m.2 SSD

      standards have changed it seems. HDDs used to be 3 years, but Seagate offered 5 years to pip the competition. Now it's down to 1 year.. ouch.

          i have too many HDDs using this connector that transitioning to USBC will suck and require two cables, more or less forever.

          USBC is not going to increase its speed anyway. I have a micro-USB3 cable permanently attached to my PC, so all I do is insert it into the drive.

    It appears WD is matching this deal on Amazon. Currently $155.44. Not sure which is the better HDD.

      You won't be able to shuck WD drives as the USB connector is soldered onto the drive.

      Seagate has the normal SATA connector if you ever want to connect it up to an internal SATA ports on your PC. This means you can do data recovery if the enclosure or USB connector fails. You won't be able to do that on a WD.
