I don't know I'd trust a new seller & slow shipment from China.

  • $34 from Amazon AU
    $29 from a random 3rd party seller

  • Bought a few HS-100 @$9.95 (no power monitoring) on Monday.

Have a few HS-110 bought in Amazon sales around this price, but haven't found a real use for power monitoring / programming with them, in my use.

They are bulky (I use flat double-adapter to fit beside another plug) but handy as operate without hub or cloud service.

    • Have you received the plugs from 9.95$ deal?

Received? That Deal is only for pick up from stores, if they have stock.
        Picked up on Monday.

        • Ah i mistook it for another earlier deal

If you want to know how much power is being used by an appliance then they do that well.

I have one hooked up to the washing machine and have set up a monitor on my computer to alert me when the power draw drops to zero so that I know the washing is done, which I find is great.

I can’t think of much else that I could usefully use one for myself.

      • I read that here long ago as a useful set up. Considered that idea when I bought these plugs. But never bothered.

Can simply look at the power consumption in app using this plug - to see if finished.

As all my equipment (like the washing machine) are used much the same each time on same settings, the easier approach was to set up a timer for the few appliances on the phone.

And I'm in no hurry to empty my washing machine. I do that when I get around to it. An hour after finished is ok with me.

Often the simple ways are the best, depending on your circumstances.

I've used power consumption meters for over a decade. Rarely use. Installed a HS-110 on the fridge this morning. Had a Bauhn power meter with graphing installed since I bought the fridge a year ago. Looked at the results only a couple of times.

      • How accurate is this? I remember reading that washers/dryers drop to zero/near zero a few times during the cycle, so it's hard to trigger alerts based on this. What have you integrated this with to trigger alerts?

        • My washing machine is very accurate. It does drop to a few watts during the cycle, but switches off completely at the end and drops to zero. Different models may vary.

There is no simple out of the box to provide those alerts though. I’ve got a c# app running on a pc doing it based on a library that someone else wrote to talk to the hs110. It isn’t quite suited for general consumption, but wouldn’t take too much effort to get it there. There are some other integrations people have used which seemed more complicated to me.

I was pondering whether it could be made into an iOS app and run on a phone instead. I might try one day especially if there were interest. Would be much better if TPLink allowed the hs110 to be programmed to trigger alerts itself in firmware.

Other suggestions about use with washing machine etc in old Deals

Handy to detect stopped, due to out of balance (I often miss that) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7379429/redir

Power consumption of the HS-110 - higher than standby power consumption of most appliances.
As washing machine is only switched on for infrequent use, there is no standby consumption. Installing the HS-110 will increase consumption!

Grabbing the stats from the device

    • I can't think of any programming use either. It's handy to have a meter for one off consumption checks but once you know that info I don't see a point in continually monitoring it.

I've used mine to check circuits I've typically left powered 24/7 (through laziness) to see if there's any point adding a smart plug for energy saving purposes. It really doesn't take long to pay off a $20 smart plug

      • Agree.
Posted above another members consumption reading of these plugs (1-2W). Not worthwhile just to avoid standby consumption.

Adding the plug to washing machine means increasing power consumed - it's normally switched off…

Same with power meters - once you have general idea of power consumption, there is little need after that.

    • What's the max wattage on these? Most 10A smart plugs can't handle the peak start up power surge from 2400w heaters and similar appliances. They just trip every time. The tplink plugs are rated to 3600w peak, which is what sets them apart IMO. But their shape is annoying.

      • Yes, the higher peak power is handy for surges (tried a HS-110 to 4kW today - worked fine for a single 5 minute on/off test).
But GPO are only intended to be used @10A max - the maximum consumption of almost all plug in appliances.

      • Yeah, I've bought about six of these over the years. I monitor energy as well as use them to turn things off when they're not in use and they do their job really well.

Just the shape and size means it always takes up two sockets, I wish they'd release a revised version that's smarter about not physically getting in the way…

        • Discussion in last Tp Link deal about new thinner model soon.

To fit between other plugs, I plug this into a flat double adapter or an old flat surge protector (I've got a few lying around) - to raise the HS-110 above the other plugs.

        • Some less chunky plugs will fit in the socket beside my arlec plug/power meter, so they don't always take up two sockets.

  • The energy monitoring feature (from my experience) is complete rubbish. It worked for literally four days, before reporting that our DeLonghi 2,000W panel heater is averaging 21,474 kWh/day.

Not looking forward to the next power bill if this is accurate :)

    Anybody else had this issue?

    • No. Try resetting - click remove the device & reinstall.

      What's a heater? 😉
Haven't used one in years - am in QLD🌞

Meh, I'd still rather live in Melbourne, even with heaters and COVID-19 outbreaks ;) Cool, will try give the thing a factory reset. Thanks!

        • And I'd much rather live where I do, sitting in the sun @27C & no mask😉

Worth a try resetting. I did it this morning changing the plug from use with a kettle to the fridge - to clear the stats & rename the device.
