    • Hi there, can I ask you a question about the car’s luxury and tech packs. Are these to be bought in packages and not à la carte?

  • I gotta say, I loved my Skoda Octavia right up until it passed the 5 year mark earlier this year. Now the big repair jobs are rolling out of the woodwork. Skoda won't cover it. I've only done ~30,000km in it and it is just a casual family car.

So buyer beware. Although 7 years sounds like a good deal.

    • That's really unusual for a Skoda in my experience. Mine is 12yo with 145k and there has been no big repair bills. I guess there can always be one out of the box that causes problems, but I've heard of very few experiences like yours with Skoda.

      • That's really unusual for a Skoda in my experience.

Well you have bought one Skoda in your lifetime like me. Doesn't make your experience the usual.

I've have 2 friends which have bought Skoda's (reason I considered the car), one had an issue but was lucky fixed at the 4.5 year mark. The other friend hasn't had a problem at all.

Cars get problems, you just hope that they fall within warranty when they do.

The problems with may car is about $1k to fix. So it isn't massive. But I also have some interesting wear and tear issues with the car (steering wheel started flaking its weird fo leather about 18 months into it being purchased, but we couldn't be sure it wasn't something that one of the drivers (who comes into contact with constant cleaning chems for work) hadn't had it on their hands then on steering wheel and had caused it, so we didn't chase it up. The other is the thumb cap on the handbrake broke off and it costs much much more than a few bucks to replace which I think is crazy. Reminds me of when things like Mobile phone cradles in cars use to cost like 5k to install in Mercs the 2000s.

I'm not saying don't buy a Skoda. I have loved the car for 5 years. Just really annoyed that I am having the biggest issues so far just out of warranty!

    • What was wrong with it?

    • 30,00k's in 5 years? Only driven to church on Sundays by an old lady?

      • Only driven to church on Sundays by an old lady?

Just to work, schools, kinders, shops and back. Live pretty close to everything so nothing is over a 10km round trip. Also did 6 months of once a fortnight commuting from Wollongong to Sydney in the first 6 months of owning the car.

It is a standard Octavia sedan so isn't really the fun touring car to be doing super long trips in. Maybe if I bought a top of the line RS I would have wanted to plow heaps of KMs into it given the drastic depreciation!

    • It's a Golf but even cheaper made, what did you expect?

      • To last 6 years.

      • It's not 'cheaper made'. Skoda is regarded as having better build quality than many VW models, as the factories in the Czech Republic are some of the most modern in Europe. So your opinion is ill-informed.

        • Maybe in Australia, most certainly not in Europe.

And yes, if you're buying any of three brands of this group you're buying from the least ethical manufacturer on the planet who decided poison millions of people for their own profit.

          Hope you're feeling better now.

          • @[Deactivated]: Let's be honest, you really don't know very much about Skoda and their manufacturing quality at all, so you're just throwing out generalisations. I'm guessing you've never even sat in one, let alone driven one.

And there are 8 car brands in the VW Group, not three.

            • @damo105: Let's be honest, you have absolutely no idea what I know about Skoda. So everything you doing here is just throwing out generalisations.

But you don't have to believe me. Just go to dealership and compare used Golf and Octavia of same age. And you'll know what I'm talking about.

              • @[Deactivated]: You still haven't presented any information that suggests you're very familiar with the brand, so it's a safe assumption you're not.

As for used Golf and Octavia of the same age, what are you suggesting? If you're suggesting there's a difference in quality then what are the facts that support that?

I have a 12yo Octavia, and have been surprised at how good it has been. Even with 145k on it, it still feels tight and solid on the road, there are no rattles, the interior and trim have stood up well, it has been super reliable, has cost me less in maintenance than any other car I've owned, and overall I'm very very satisfied with it. Comparing to other cars I've owned that were starting to fall apart by 100k (eg Ford with an interior that was disintegrating), the Skoda appears to have fantastic build quality.

And I'm obviously not alone, as I'm aware of dozens and dozens of other Skoda owners on various forums who report the same thing. And over the past 10 years or so, Skoda has consistently ranked in the top 2 or 3 brands for owners satisfaction in the UK JD Power owners satisfaction survey, recording less faults than most other brands, including many of the Japanese brands.

So from my perspective, there is no question that Skoda offers a good quality product, and are good value for the price. I'm not suggesting it's a premium brand, and from the VW stable Audi is clearly a more premium product in terms of interior finish etc, but when it comes to build quality there is no discernible difference.

I have no particular allegiance to Skoda, I just like to see considered and informed opinions expressed, and not have people pile sh*t on a brand without any factual basis to their comments.
