I don't know what the concentration of what you listed is, but it won't be any more than 10%.
    This is far better value:
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/hillmark-375g-scalex-appliance-d…

It also works great for removing stains in your toilet bowl.

…you do realise that has "POISON" written on it, right? You sure you want to use that on your kettle?

      • +4

It’s sulphuric acid, so yes, poison to drink.
If you cleaned your kettle with it an rinsed it out, it would be fine.

        • +6

Everything is poison; it is just a question of concentration or dose.

        • -1

Sulfamic acid not sulfuric acid, but yes, correct otherwise.

        • Good point, just concerned it will take one negligent person or misuse for something bad to happen. Why use it when there are safe alternatives such as lemon and vinegar which Breville themselves recommend in their instructions booklet.

          • @[Deactivated]: Agreed. I don't have hard water though, so maybe some places need more aggressive measures.

      • +1

Using that logic, you'd drink the advertised one because it doesn't have POISON written on it?

        • Does the advertised one say "drink me" on it? Completely missing the point. The logic is use the product for its intended purpose, especially if it's a potentially dangerous substance.

I use a slice of lemon - boil it couple of times and removes the build up and stains.

    • +16

I use some white vinegar, lemons are expensive 😂

      • I cut, squeezed and poured lemon juices from my lemon tree for free. How's that.

        • +5

When life gives you lemons…you descale your kettles for free!

    • +1

Yep same, have a glass kettle, just chop up and leave in the kettle overnight and like new next morning.
Go for a walk around the surburb and every few weeks there is usually always people giving away free lemons on their verge.

    • Bring the Lemon and Tea to boil… now you got Lemon Tea which cleaned your kettle and a free drink.

  • I was looking to descale my Breville Bambino Plus at a reasonable price, I think the descaler is $30 ! … Can I use this ?

    • +5

Just buy citric acid from Colesworths. It's in the baking section.

Dissolve a few teaspoons in a litre of water and run it through the machine, then flush another litre of fresh water through.

Will cost you cents each time.

    • As someone who already has this product, I'm also keen to know if I can use it to descale my coffee machine.

  • +2

Just a question, what difference this product does as against using white vinegar+water (boil)?

    • +5

      $5 😀
Sorry, I don't know, I'm using white vinegar too.

      • +1

this was my experiance too with this product. if you got build up that wont go with the home remedies, use this. but it's best not to let it get that far and use home remidies from the start so you don't need this stuff, but it works

    • +1

Assuming it's sulfamic acid, it does work better in my experience, but given that we generally don't have very hard water in Australia, vinegar or citric acid should do the job just fine.

  • +2

ive use all the home remedies and most work some what, this worked far far better in our kettle, but now will only use this every so often and use vinegar most the time

  • I tried boiling vinegar and water in the kettle. It ended up overflowing. It wasn't even half full :S

    What went wrong?

    • +2

boil water, leaving room for vinegar, add vinegar once boiled let it sit for say 30 min (or longer if you have a lot of build up)

      • what's the water vs vinegar ratio if you don't mind me asking?

        • +1

I just pour it in, say 25%?

    • +1

Use even less vinegar and water. You only need to use the minimum amount of mixture to allow the kettle to boil.

    • If this is a riddle…. Don't use Soda Water…. LoL

      • Not a riddle. I poured in tap water and added some vinegar. It was a third full.

Then let it boil, damn thing bubbled up and came out the spout.

        • probably you used too much vinegar

This was pointed out last time, but this is always $5 at Big W https://www.bigw.com.au/product/breville-kettle-cleaner-bkc2…

Big W won't deliver it for free to Prime members though.

  • +2

500 ml water + half lemon + 1 tsp citric acid works for me :)

  • +3

Lemons of you don't have a tree, Woolies often have frozen lemons in a bag for 2bucks 450g
    (https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/679660/woo…)
Just put a couple in gave it a boil…
Woo Woo it does get in

  • +2

What’s with everyone’s fascination about this “deal”? It’s always $5 despite the “rrp” (check the camels), always in stock but available at big w if not. Really not a deal imo

  • What's the best way of descaling an iron? This product?

  • +1

Comparative cost per descale assuming you use the recommended amounts for approx. 1L total solution:

Breville BKC250 at this price: about $1.20.

Citric acid from the supermarket at $2.25 for 75g: about $0.75.

White vinegar from the supermarket at $1.20 for 2L: about $0.20.

That's based on directions from BKC250 bottle, Mckenzie's citric acid container, and the manual for my old Breville stainless steel kettle which included instructions for descaling with vinegar.

The directions for vinegar do say it's meant to be left overnight (vs 15-30 min for the others), so it's the least convenient and perhaps risky to your drowsy, forgetful self or other unsuspecting kettle user.

    • Did that last week. Let the water/vinegar mix soak in the kettle all afternoon, then forgot about it. Didn't notice my mistake as I boiled the evening cuppa, but the milk curdled in the tea. Tossed that cuppa and that carton of milk out only to discover the new carton and tea bag did the same. Then I remembered … !

  • I was going to buy this product during the last sale….i took the advice of fellow ozbargainers by cutting up a lemon and boiling it in the kettle.

Works a treat. Just leave it for about 20 mins afterward the water boils.

    Smell fresh too.
