I've been patiently waiting for this drive to drop in price…. and the 3 camels told me so this morning! https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B07TY2TN64

the reviews are great on these.

tomshardware have it on top of their Best SSDs 2020 list: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-ssds,3891.html

"Adata’s XPG SX8200 Pro is the best 1TB class SSD for the money. With high-performance that rivals Samsung’s 970 EVO Plus and PRO SSDs, it is a Pro class drive through and through. It boasts best-in-class power efficiency with very respectable endurance and has a price that won’t break the bank."

Yeah it's a great drive. This is the reason I recommend avoiding Samsung drives when they aren't on cashback, competitors make 95% of what Samsung does for 70-80% the cost. This drive is still overkill af for most.

      • +2

The only criticism I have of this drive is the heat-sink is a bit Micky mouse.

        • +1

          Not too goofy imho…

        • Yeah not enough surface area, quite useless. You'd be better off blowing on it with your mouth.

    • I wish I got this instead of the crucial P1 as a secondary nvme. Still undecided about the Sabrant Rocket I bought, it seems fine so far.

      • The Sabrent Rocket is a great drive.

  • +1

    These are getting real tempting

    • I couldnt resist, pulled the trigger!

Given most 2TB NVMe drives of this calibre are priced at around $240-$250+ USD, it aint gonna get much lower in price in a hurry IMO….. until black friday sales anyway.

  • Bought this for $394 after cashback three weeks ago. Even better price, I'm spewing

    • +8

I'm sure you would have gotten your extra $1.80 value out of it in three weeks of use.

      • I too bought it 3 or 4 weeks ago, and Fastway have only just got it into Australia…
I wonder if Amazon will refund the difference given it's not even delivered yet?

        • +1

Definitely contact their support chat and ask. They are usually very good in this regard because i believe you have the option of returning it even after it arrives.

          • @Skramit: Good tip. Got a $10 credit. But the price changed to $413 the second I contacted them and I explained to the rep the item was $392 to which he stated the prices are always changing. Still gave me a credit.

      • It's about a $20 difference after cashback and I haven't recieved it yet xD

You will lose 5 years warranty though. I doubt Amazon will give you 5 years warranty on US products. IMO its not worth ordering stuff from Amazon that has long warranties like these SSDs and PSUs. 1 or 2 years warranty items are fine as I believe Amazon will be forced to honour them (as per the consumer law?).

    • ADATA Australia Website says it comes with 5 year warranty:

      (1) SX910 / SX930 / SU900 / SX6000 / SX6000 Pro / SX7000 / SX8000 / SX8200 / SX8200 Pro / SX9000 / SX950U / S10 / S11 covered by a 5-year limited warranty;

The only applicable paragraph i can find to your concern is this one:

3.1 This warranty will not apply under these circumstances:
      (5) Products purchased through unauthorized distribution channels, second-hand retailers, or resale products that violate national import and export regulations.

I can't see how Amazon is an unauthorised distribution channel since I have puchased from Amazon AU.

I also asked Amazon support about this and they advised it comes with 1 year amazon warranty as per standard plus the 5 year direct manufacturer warranty. They didnt indicate any issue of this nature.

Also the "limited" warranty mostly refers to the TBW ratings of the device.

      • +1

Direct warrany means shipping back to US unless the manufacturer supports international warraties. This is my understanding. I dont know why someone downvoted me. So essentially you will get 1 year amazon AU warranty. Shipping this back to US in the future negates the discount we are getting now (assuming something goes wrong).

    • You will lose 5 years warranty though. I doubt Amazon will give you 5 years warranty on US products. IMO its not worth ordering stuff from Amazon that has long warranties like these SSDs and PSUs.

I buy a lot of computer parts (I'm a computational statistician) and Amazon is by far and away the best when it comes to warranty.

It's not even close. No local store, online or B&M has a return policy as generous as Amazon, none make the warranty process as easy and seamless as Amazon.

      • You realise its Amazon US imported product correct? 5 years is manufacturer warranty thats applicable if you buy stuff from Amazon AU warehouse. This is shipped directly from USA. So local companies will not have this serial number listed in thier systems.

        • Then dont buy one.

But plenty of people are prepared for this small risk the drive dies in years 2-5. In year one you are 100% covered by Amazon AU anyway. In my experience with PC hardware, hardware either has issues on arrival DOA, the first few weeks or it lasts for ages (if cared for adequately).

          • @Skramit: I am not buying one and neither have I downvoted this deal. Just stating the facts so that people make informed decision. I have gotten many items shipped from Amazon USA like noctua heatsink etc that wont go bad or items that has 1 or 2 year warranty. Just telling. 400$ is not a small amount :)

        • I've returned plenty of stuff to Amazon US, as I said, perfectly fine. I would much, much rather buy from Amazon US than most local PC hardware retailers.

          • @p1 ama: Did you return it from your own budget? If so how much does it cost usually?

            • @[Deactivated]: No, shipping paid for by Amazon.

              • @p1 ama: who did you contact to get shipping paid by amazon, was it amazon au?

              • @p1 ama: Were the items returned after 1 year of purchase or before? Just curious to know since its not clearly mentioned anywhere how the warranty works :-| for imported items.

                • @[Deactivated]: I'm not Amazon's marketing and customer PR team. If you want to know how their warranty process works, then contact them and find out. I'm just giving my own personal experience, which is that they've always resolved any issues I've had in a satisfactory manner.

                  • @p1 ama: I know amazon accepts upto 1 year, but since you have mentioned you returned many US items and that was also through amazon I was wondering if they accepted even after 1 year and until the products warranty ended. Your answer to that would have been really helpful. Sorry mate if that offended you.

Not sure why you think I'm offended. I'm just pointing out that I am not employed by Amazon and I have no idea what their policy is. They helped me out, they may or may not help you out.

                      • @p1 ama: I get that, but was it an year since you had purchased the item or was it before completing a year since the purchase :)

  • Perfect timing! I just got the refund back from Amazon US for the wrong drive they sent, I ordered the SX8200 1TB back in June and they sent 500GB.

  • So tempting but I already have a 1TB 970 EVO Plus.

  • +1

I think this is a good stick based on what I'm reading. I'm tempted to buy it and planning to use it as a NAS caching nvme. Is this one an overkill or appropriate?

    • Is this one an overkill or appropriate?

Very overkill IMO. Who the heck needs 2TB of NAS cache lol. Are you frequently copying 2TB files to your NAS in one hit?

      • As a matter of fact. Not at all.

I'm new to the NAS thing. I've got a Synology DS920+ which is meant to take load off a Mac Mini 2012 for Plex and VM (Win 10). I also plan to share storage within the household, right now is just myself and my wife. Overall , we only use 70% of the 12 TB HDD (shucked from WD Elements).

To be honest, I don't know if I need to upgrade the RAM or add ssd caching for this purpose.

    • +1

Have you got >5gbe connection or duplex 2.5gbe at least? Networkinf is gonna be your bottleneck.

      • Thanks. Nope I don't. :(

    • It depends what you use your NAS for and why you want the cache.

From what I've read SSD cache on a NAS for most users is pointless.

      • Thanks. Like I mentioned in my response to Skramit, I'm not sure if I need to "upgrade" the DS920+ for my purpose. Good that I've checked here before I pull the trigger.

        • No worries! I wanted SSD cache in my DS1819+ as well… consensus from prior google research was simply 'don't bother'. :)

Welcome to the Synology club btw!! :)

I even went from 4GB to 8GB of RAM cos I thought it would boost performance - but then it wouldn't POST after a couple of restarts so I put the original RAM back in.

No performance increase was observed for simple file storage and a couple of Synology apps. LOL

          • @wellzi: Yeh I’m actually excited. :)

The default RAM is 4GB and I read it online that I could add another 4GB to pair with the existing one. By the sound it’s not going to give much performance boost.

            • +1

@JC1986: I had a different experience with my DS418 - upgraded the ram and improved overall speeds significantly, well worth it imo.

              • @aaronmr: oh. ok thanks. I'm still at the early stage of setting it up and will observe it for a couple of week.

Most likely will get a Cruicial 4gb ram that's not going to necessarily cost me too much.

              • @aaronmr: Nice! :) … I'm not advising against a RAM upgrade and too have heard of performance improvements for others!

I simply didn't experience any performance boost in my deployment. I'm currently using 14% of 4GB so no need for me.

RAM is an easy / cheap upgrade! Just make sure you grab a compatible stick!

    • It depends….If you have a massive NAS pool, let's say 100+TB, then this is perfect! For smaller pools, this is an overkill. I'd say, most people will be fine with 500Gb for caching.
I have a FreeNAS without caching. The bottleneck for most operations is 1Gb network and not the storage.

    Great drives.

Have been using them in all my builds for the last year or so.

Personally using 3 in my main build.

Have two 1TB version in RAID 0 for certain projects and 1 512GB for a system drive. Haven't missed a beat and the pricing is great.

Now I am very tempted to upgrade my two 1TBs to these.

  • thanks for posting this, needed a second drive and this is a great price for 2TB

  • I'm glad to see SSD prices coming down, should indicate there will be good supply for when PS5 launches & SSD upgrades become a thing.

  • Thank you OP. Exactly what i was waiting for.

  • So tempted, but my B450M Mortar Max Motherboard throttles the speeds of the 2nd NVMe drive :(
Is there an easy way to copy my 1TB NVMe drive (with Windows) onto this drive and then swap this faster drive into the main NVMe M.2. Slot?

    • +1

Yes, you should be able to use some third party software to get this done (or even adata might have one). Even then 1.75 GB per second is fast enough for your second slot. When you use random access, you wont be hitting that speed anyway. Its onyl sequential speed you will lose. BTW I have the same mobo :) Just remember, by using this, you will lose the last pcie slot.

    • +1

I used clonezilla to do this, albeit with SATA SSDs. Have been using the clone for a few weeks now and everything seems to be perfect.
The website and UI look a bit dodgy lol, but it is open source and I've seen others recommend it before.
All said the process was pretty easy just following instructions on their site, and the copying took a couple of hours (not sure if it would be faster with faster drives). After it was done I noticed the new drive showed as the exact same capacity as the old one, so if the new drive is bigger you need to initialise the extra space and it will become a seperate partition (so in your case the cloning would produce a 1TB boot partition, then you'd want to initialise the remaining 1TB). Not sure if there's a way to merge them.
Bear in mind it's hard to properly wipe the old drive (unless I'm an idiot lol), because the computer won't let you have both in at the same time, so I had to connect it to a second PC and format it from there.
Finally, on the point of your mobo having one slow M.2, have you looked into a pcie slot to M.2 adapter?

      Cheers, hope this helps.

  • Price is showing as $413 for me. Anyone else?

    • +1

      Same.

    • The deal is over, but keep an eye, it might keep popping back in.

      • Would you say it's still worth it at $413? I was happy to pull the trigger at $392 and I would rather not wait much longer for an M.2 drive 1TB-2TB as a 2nd drive for my new XPS 17.

$413 still seems like a good deal, given the price trends in the OP's Camel Camel Camel link.

        • +1

I am not really sure about that. Everybody's needs are different. I have a 970Evo plus 500GB as my primary drive and got a 2tb mx500 yesterday for 300bux. This drive is good if you ready to settle for 1 year warranty as opposed to 5. But 413 is something you have to make a choice depending on how urgently you need one and how much money you have.

        • +1

I've had this drive on my Amazon wish list for a while and been keeping an eye on it. it's been hovering around $413-407 for a few weeks and is definitely on a downward trend post COVID hardware shortages out of China/Taiwan. I would personally wait for sub $400, but if you need it now, 413 with cashback isnt too bad. Its certainly on par or better than any local pricing.

          • @Skramit: Just bagged it at $390 (+ exp. post.). Thanks a lot Skramit and well done on your support of this entire thread mate. Top shelf.

    • Yep, $413.05

    • +1

      Back at $392.90

  • I bought one of these second hand. Been using it for the past year or so as my daily driver. Hasn't skipped a beat.

  • Whats the endurance on this drive?

    • 1280TB

    • Unless u use it in server or business purpose, otherwise this ssd may have longer life than u

      • Running lots of VMs

  • Pulled the trigger on 4x for my qnap NAS RAID5 setup. Still available from Amazon US for $237 afrer the $13 promo credit which works out to be $332aud, engaging my personal shopper service to purchase, with the 10% tip and DHL 3 day shipping service will work out lower than the $392 Amazon AU - ping me if ya want deets. Amazon US availability showing PRIME 2 day shipping.

    • I investigated a US forward shipper but CBF in the end hehe.

      • Haha yeah it's a bit of a hassle but the one I use is P2P so no GST under $1k per shipment so works out worth the extra effort ;)

        • Hmmmm a tax dodge…. sounds dodge.

          • @Skramit: Hah don't think it's dodge as it's peer to peer individuals who probably don't meet the minimum turnover threshold requirements, I'm not complaining!

  • UMART had these for $399. But out of stock. Says ETA: 04/08/2020 but id imagine unlikely.

    • Yeah I saw that but plus shipping unless near a umart.

      • what im trying to get at is.. if u had local stock that provided 5yrs warranty for not much more vs AmazonUS even with the additional postage, where would you get it from? i am aware amazon does have great wty.

        • Yep certainly to be considered!

  • any particular enclosure recommended to with this drive?

    • +1

Its a high performance drive, to me its a bit wasted as an external drive. You'd be better off with a cheaper SATA SSD in an enclosure IMO.

Anyway something like this would do the trick.

      • LOL …thats the exact enclosure I was looking at :) I want use this Adata drive in place of buying an SSD to go inside an iMac, boot and run intensive stuff off it and leave the fusion drive to do the slower filing etc …

        • Just keep in mind with that enclosure the best you'lll get is 10Gb/s on USB 3.1 Gen2 which translates to 1250MB/s theoretical but more like 800-900MB/s reality with overhead etc.

It's still find for everyday use but for a NVMe drive capable of 3000MB/s it seeems a bit overkill.

Does your Mac have a USB 3.1 Gen2 port?

  • As I am waiting for Rzyen 4000, I wonder should I buy this now @ $392.90 + $7.27 Delivery

    • My gut feel is these high capacity SSDs will continue to fall in price over the next 3-6 months as (hopefully) COVID stock shortages ease and we see Black Friday sales in Nov. Also the 2TB capacity should see prices fall slowly as 4TB drives are starting to really hit consumer shelves… driving dopwn 2TB pricing.

I would wait until Ryzen 4000 personally.

      • Got it with thanks.

  • dropped further to $389.99?

    • +1

Good spot. I contacted support they gave me a $5 voucher :)

      • +1

        Gratz!

      • Is it stingy if I do the same, given it's a whopping 44c cheaper than the price I got? :P

        • +1

Nothing is stingy with Amazon…. have a look at their profits :)

  • Thank you. I bought this over the Corsair MP600

  • Price dropped further to $388.38 now.
Edit: And up to $403 now with delivery out to September

  • Mine is on board for delivery now with Fedex! Woot

  • Mine has also shipped. Just went with the free delivery as i'm not in a hurry for it.

    • Same but they sent mine fedex which was only shipped Saturday and ready for delivery today. I love Fedex!! I was able to see it flying from Memphis to Honolulu to Sydney on the weekend :)

      • how much extra do you pay for FedEx?
