  • Is this worth the $100 over the 1650 super?

I'm looking to play FS2020 when it comes out next month.

Rest of the specs are a i5-4690k, 8GB ram (I'll be upgrading it).

      • +6

Userbenchmark as a comparison tool has gone from flawed to outright deceptive in the last 12 months, don't use it, particularly for CPUs.

HWBench is a good tool for GPU comparisons.

    • If you're looking for a card and can't wait for the 3060 in a few months, maybe consider the 4GB RX570 @ $180 or less.

Will perform roughly the same as the 1650 Super until Mesh Shaders become a thing in games, and you'll recoup more of your money back in the used market should you wish to upgrade further (perhaps along with a monitor upgrade).

EDIT: for the down vote brigade's consideration:

Roughly the same as the 1650 Super.

I dunno man look at some benchmarks and there's definitely a bit of a difference.

Edit: More like 5%, it's there though. I went to look at a video after saying this like an idiot.

      • -1

Why the down votes? FFS people if you disagree at least state why.

        • Most of them will be people I've disagreed with in previous posts. Sadly, the gaming community is overly driven by immature men, especially on OzB.

      • +1

The cheapest rx 570s are around $230. They also have a max power draw of 200 watts, compared to 120 watts for the 1650 super and 125 watts for the 1660 super.

When you factor in the power costs, the 1650 super is always a better buy (plus more performance) and the 1660 super upgrade pays for itself within 2-3 years of gaming.

        • +1

I'm seeing cards for in stock for $190, but like I said, $180 and under.

          • @jasswolf: Found a CPL one for $199. Even still, you're trading a slightly cheaper sales price for something that'll be more expensive to run and perform worse so in the long run it costs more and is slower (plus runs a lot hotter). Doesn't seem worth it unless it's purely as a stop-gap card until RDNA 2 and Ampere.

            • +1

@iseeyou1312: Yup, that's the exact purpose. It has higher re-sale percentages than Turing because of its compute capability (and usability) for the price.

    • +1

This is worth it for the price.
There will literally always be something else coming out in the next few months, if you don't want to wait this is worth the price.
The 1650 super is a struggle at 1080p for most AAA games, I use this for 1440p gaming.

      • -1

If this is worth it for the price, the 2060 is the steal of the century for DLSS when it's available under $450.

This 1660 Super is never actually on sale for a decent price because people keep blindly recommending this card.

Wait for Ampere if you can, buy budget or buy used and wait for Ampere if you can't.

        • 2060 delivers around 20% more performance for 28% more cost. A poor value suggestion.
If you're looking for 60fps or more on AAA titles at 1440p the 1660 super at this price represents very good value for money.
If you are looking for more than a 2070 would be a better option, however each persons use case is different.

          • @thedean: Ah, so you deny the value in both DLSS and raytracing? All the best with that.

It's over 20% more raster performance, FYI, 21-24% across most reviewers.

    • -7

I would go with the 1660 since it has 6gb memory and games are using more and more of it.

      • Not sure what you mean. Both these have 6GB?

        • -8

1660 is way better. Higher fps by 30%

    • +1

      save the thirty bucks.

      • A little more reasoning would be good.

        • +4

          Are you new here 🤷🏼‍♂️

        • +6

What kind of reasoning do you want - they're effectively the same card.

          Galax Positives:
+If you can pick up it's $48 cheaper
          +It's local stock

          Asus positives:
+Asus is a slightly more reputable brand I guess

          Asus negatives:
-Only 2% more factory OC performance for 12% more money, but you can OC them both manually and it's a lottery anyway.

    • +1

hmm from other comments the more know branded cards where slighty better as they were already factory overclocked. i ended up getting this from mwave https://www.mwave.com.au/product/pny-geforce-gtx-1660-super-… $10 more for a factory oc, better warranty, heating solution and a better looking card. plus its available already whereas the one from amazon in your link wont be ready for dispatch till the end of the August.

    • Unlikely that you'll get 30-50$ extra performance from it.

Risky to buy something from US if goes bad (don't get me wrong, I've done it, but I didn't have to send back)

Galax is actually a reliable brand and it is debatable that it is actually a lesser card.

  • -1

No it's not a good time to build a computer….

Probably the worst time since GPU mining shortages.

  • +1

I have a 1660 super and love it. Plays all games (I play at full) and handles VR seamlessly

  • Hardly "never ending". Doesn't it end August 19?

    • Yes, by that time, another cheaper sale will take its place.

      • Since the lockdown is never-ending in Vic, good time to build a computer to stay at home.

        lockdown not sale

        • +2

Yes, by that time, another cheaper sale lockdown will take its place

          🔮 👨🏻‍🔬

          • @Steptoe: But this is just Victoria, not the whole of Australia.

  • Hi, I’m running GTX960 at the moment, is it possible to switch to this? Main uses are World of Warcraft. Will i notice much difference?

    • +4

Not really, but save your money for the 3060 coming in a few months, or the 3050 early next year.

The former will be not much more than this on sale, and the latter will be much cheaper and outperform this while having RTX features.

Now is a terrible time to buy a graphics card (this is full MSRP for a crappy budget card), so while you would see small benefits due to increased VRAM and GPU features, make use of your functioning GPU for a little while longer.

      • +1

will be much cheaper and outperform this while having RTX features.

        you sure nvidia won't slap aud$399 on 3050 and aud$649 on 3060 ?

        • +1

Pretty confident that the 3060 won't be priced at USD $420 without a $300 card that presents as a proper upgrade path for the 2060.

Even if this stuff is on Samsung 8nm, that'll be because it's dirt cheap to make it that way.

        • -1

$650 for a 3060 is probably very wishful thinking try $750-800 at launch

      • +1

Waddya mean a GTX 1660 Super won't be much of an improvement over a GTX 960???

It's a literal doubling of performance.

It's definitely an upgrade considering they're running dual 144hz monitors.

        • Check the time stamps before assuming I glossed over that, but the point of the post was to answer the question of whether they should buy this, something else, or wait.

The answer is wait, because this is MSRP, and it's not really worth it when its intrinsic value about to drop to as low as 33% of this.

If you have a functioning GPU, my best advice is going to be wait for the next-gen GPUs coming out over the next 3-4 months, or at least for a price drop.

    • +1

It is possible. I recently went from a GTX 970 to a GTX 1650 Super (As a repair, not an upgrade reason).

Assuming you're playing at 1080p, you won't notice a huge difference in WoW.

      Edit. Can't wait for Shadowlands.

      • I don't see much benefit running higher than 1080p for WoW although it's choppy during epic BG's. What framerates were you running previously to now?

        • Well, it's less benefit, more about what monitor you have.

I haven't played in in a while but I was playing at 60FPS/2560x1600 on my GTX 970 at about high settings but with Shadow Detail turned to Low (it's a killer on FPS).

          • @The Value: I'm running dual AOC Agon 31.5" 144hz at the moment. I'll wait for another price drop. Hopefully $300 soon

  • got this 1660 super last month, very happy so far

  • Budget model at full MSRP with Ampere announcement days away and the 3060 likely in early November.

This is an awful deal, and with the 2070 and up being EoL, it hasn't been a worse time to buy a GPU since Q2 2018.

Wait for Ampere, get 4k60 graphics with raytracing at around this price (more with DLSS, perhaps more than 4k120).

    • +2

I think you're being too optimistic about what the 3 series will bring but I agree it is a bad time to buy a GPU. 4k60 with DLSS maybe.

      • -3

The 2060 is 4k60 with DLSS today.

Expect 60+ % raster boost with at least a doubling in DLSS performance (ie. DLSS latency, which is at 1.5-2ms on a 2080Ti) due to Tensor core architectural changes seen in the GA100.

        • +3

          I don't think the 2060 is 4k 60 card….

Though I agree with the rest.

          • @scuderiarmani:

            with DLSS

Which is true if you're not using raytracing. I understand adoption rates aren't high right now, but clearly that will dramatically evolve from now on.

  • Not sure if you know what you're doing as I'm able to do raytracing on an i3 6100/ NVIDIA GeForce 610
    https://imgur.com/gallery/E5x9wmt

    • OMG That was awesome., but you did miss a wee bit down the bottom left. Maybe you need the OC version of the 610?

  • FYI - Asus 1660 Super OC is $358 @ Amazon AU
