Can still save your workouts manually by plugging your device into your computer via USB->browse to the activities directory->take today's .fit file->save this to computer to upload later or upload it to a 3rd party service (e.g. strava).

What is the issue? Anything that is connected to the interweb can be hacked. Airgap it if you don't want to be exposed.

OP's autocorrect obviously disabled by Garmin hack :(

Oh thank you, what an amazingly simple solution, I can't believe nobody has come up with this, where's your Nobel peace prize?

It's a bit annoying but the data stays on your device so you can upload once that have rectified.

    • Generic things like steps and sleep tend to save for ages, however each device can only store a certain number of activities. Therefore if someone is doing a large workout in and using a different activity to track each different thing (eg starting a new strength session for each type of weight activity) it could max out this number within one session.

That being said, it’s easy to just combine them into one activity, or to follow the steps I posted above to manually save them.

But then it can't be posted on FB!

I'm worried the hackers will see how unfit I am

  • Given how bad their software is it will be interesting to see how poor their security is and if they even had a DRP?

    • It's taken a long time for them to get so little information out, it doesn't look good. Reports are saying it also took out their aviation software (which is back now) and their manufacturing.
Apparently the group are after 10mil, but paying it would be illegal/breach sanctions.
It'll be interesting to see how this turns out

It looks like you're struggling with the English language.

    Their
Their is the possessive case of the pronoun they, meaning belonging to them. As in: they left their cell phones at home.

    There
There is an adverb that means in or at that place. In this sense, there is essentially the opposite of here.

    They’re
They’re is a contraction of the words they and are.

And what would you know about da…oh.

If you have read the article, rather than an attack on the servers from outside, it's rumoured to be a ransomware attack, which is usually triggered from executable payloads in the email, unpatched system, etc from inside the network. Many ransomware also targets backup system as well so they might have trouble getting any hot backup to go live.

At least most ransomware attacks don't leak user information to the public, so no one knows how unfit we are.

Triggered from email, so their response is to send out emails to notify people?

      • +1

I was just saying that email was often one if the infection point of ransomware. By law they need to inform customers if breach has been detected.

In Garmin's case however, it appears to be WastedLocker from Evil Corp (yeah literally the name behind this specific ransomware), which is usually specifically targeted and involved sophisticated attacks. It's still bad but I'll cut them some slack.

        • By law they need to inform customers if breach has been detected.

Yeah…10 years later after the fact….by which time you may as well just keep it quiet until someone rats you out for it…..

  • If the hackers had a sense of humour they’d hide a hackers trophy In the connect app and anyone who edits an activity is rewarded with it.

this explains my aunts call from a rep at 'garmin' that pretty much followed a similar script to Telstra/Microsoft 'there is a problem with your computer' scam.
