Anyone Else Noticing More Victorians on The Road in Sydney?

I’ve always been curious what every state writes at the bottom of their licence plate, like NSW is “the first state” and VIC is “the education state”. So since then, I’ve been in tune with the different state plates.

Lately, has anyone else noticed a surprising increase of VIC plated cars on the road in Sydney? I haven’t even seen that many during special events like Christmas Holidays or New Years.

@Clear: So why are you referring to TAS law for transferring VIC rego? That's why you're confused.

                      • @inherentchoice: Because you can legally drive a vehicle with VIC (or any other state's rego) within TAS for 3 months before it must be transferred over. Is that a new concept to you? Transferring rego between states?

                        • -3

@Clear: You cannot transfer rego to someone interstate. Is that a new concept to you? We are going in circles.

                          • @inherentchoice: But that's wrong. I can purchase a car in Victoria, drive it or ship it to Tasmania with VIC plates and have it become a TAS rego with TAS plates.

I purchased a car in QLD, had it garaged there at my residence, shipped it to TAS, drove it to my residence legally (as per the 3 month rule), had the QLD rego cancelled, and then registered it in TAS with new plates. One of the many ways it can be done.

Alternatively I could sell my car to you. I submit a notice of disposal and you purchase an unregistered vehicle permit. This will allow you to legally drive the car back to your state of residence.

                            • -1

@Clear: I have given you official information based on legislation.

You haven't given anything which proves you are right.

In your example you haven't transferred QLD rego to someone interstate, as it was transferred to you on the basis you were in QLD.

                              • @inherentchoice: My whole original example was pretty easy to understand but I think I need to elaborate a little bit for you. There was a major issue here where everyone was complaining that tourists were on the road because their were VIC plates everywhere, but then everyone is like how is that possible when the border is closed? Oh because they belong to Tasmanian residents who haven't had the rego changed over to Tasmanian rego. Pretty simple to understand.

But according to you it's impossible for you to get a vehicle from one state, bring it to another and have the rego changed to be of another state. What do people do when they move interstate? Sell the car? Have it destroyed? No they bring it here and later get TAS plates put onto it. How hard is that to understand?

Here's some basic info on some of the scenarios of what can and can't be done

The average joe understands that transfer is an ambiguous term in this context. There are many ways one can have an interstate car driven in another state legally and many ways it can be transferred over depending on the circumstances. Since you wanted to be technical on insignificant details you have been given some examples.

270 Victorians have been turned around at the borders already, no wonder they get called Mexicans.

I've never seen a NSW plate that says "The First State" on it? All the ones I see are either a yellow plate or white plate that says NSW in small letters but there's no slogan and no image like the V with the Southern Cross in it. I don't like how boring the licence plates are in Sydney, get some damn style NSW.

    • +4

Because you haven't lived in NSW long enough to see them; this is going back to the early 90s and hardly anyone has an early 90s plate on their car.

Plus we have custom plates for those that want it (I don't; happy with blergh yellow plates as long as there's no 4 on it), so not sure what you mean about NSW having boring plates unless this is yet another NSW-bashing comment of yours?

      • -2

The fact is that your licence plates are boring unless you pay for custom plates, mentioning you had interesting plates 30 years ago doesn't do much for the present day.

Considering I find many things wrong with your city (especially your completely illogical roads — I drove in a four lane road near Artarmon last night that was all one way, also that thread with everyone complaining how tolls here are ridiculous and that to drive on a decent road you have to pay), it is simply the cherry on top.

        • +1

Because a little V with the Southern Cross in it isn't boring …

Dude, just change careers and move back to Victoria already; nothing in NSW makes you happy.

          • -2

            @kerfuffle:

Because a little V with the Southern Cross in it isn't boring …

It's not just that but also the slogan. If I had to choose between this and this there is a clear winner between which one says "I am proud of my state".

Dude, just change careers and move back to Victoria already; nothing in NSW makes you happy.

Working on that already thanks. Also career changes aren't always simple or quick FYI, unless of course you work in McDonald's, then moving to KFC is pretty easy.

            • @Ghost47:

Where did I say or imply it was easy? I just said you should change careers if you hate NSW that much.

              • -1

@kerfuffle: It was clear you implied it was easy when you said "just change careers and move back to Victoria already" as if it can be done simply or overnight overnight. You don't know how long I've been here, you don't know my career, you don't know what I'm doing to try and move careers.

As a Victorian who came to NSW in a convoy with around 4 million other Victorians (just before the border was closed) I couldn't really say. I haven't been here before.

    • +1

Welcome. Make sure spend some of your hard-earned money here before you go. Thanks

  • Funny enough, I've noticed more SA plates than usual.

  • +2

Funny thing is there's a lot of hate towards VICs now but ppl don't realise dumb is universal and I genuinely hope there's no flare ups in othet states soon.

    • +5

Nobody hates Vic. The NSW and Qld turn is coming sometime before Xmas. Two cases is now nine. It'll be 50 cases by Friday.

      • If the wave doesn't stop, maybe we should just embrace it like Brazillian President Bolsonaro? Just another type of flu, people will die, but no need for restrictions?

Globally the spread is just continuing. Maybe it can't be controlled until a vaccine, which also may never come?

        • +2

There won't be a vaccine for another 10 years. The best that we can hope for is that this virus moves as quickly as possible across the communities. The faster it infects the faster it will burn itself out.

          • @whooah1979: There are currently about 125 potential vaccines in pre-clinical trials.

If the virus infects 7 billion people it will mutate and go around again. It will never die out.

    • +1

      14 cases today.

Shut the borders from understanding and logic.
Shut the borders from other borders.
    The list goes on.

How about we shut the borders from pointless hatred and blame during this time? Is that too much to ask?

"Victoria - In a fine state". Thanks Comrade Dan!

    • Be careful, that kind of talk can get labeled as a “Personal attack” around here…

      • Andrew himself reporting them

      • Yes for certain people humour feels like an attack. Perhaps we should ban humour?

  • I am home most of the time and I don't see any more cars with Vic plates in my home than before.

  • +2

haha, I've been noticing VIC plates too. Its probably because we are (subconsciously) looking for it ..

  • +1

    VIC is “the education state”

I saw one yesterday with the tag line "Stay Alert, Stay Safe". Was contemplating changing it to "Stay Home, Stay Safe".

  • +2

Or there are plenty of people not from NSW that have rental cars. Many rental cars have Vic plates even when hired elsewhere.

    • And nobody wants to drive them back to Victoria - ergo more Vic cars in NSW. Problem solved.

  • It’s coming your way Sydney:

So to all nsw i wellcome you back to the lock down, if they didnt track all those bastards at the night club a couple of nights back and get them quarantine. Channel 7 and 9 are still updating the situation

  • Maybe, but it is definitely sending NSW into lockdown territory again.

And QLD sadly will follow soon! Especially now people have clearly established that they cant/wont listen.

  • -1

    Smug NSW people getting nervous..
    Smug Queenslanders are more oblivious.

  • I drove from Sydney to Picton and back on the 5th, and nearly every second car on the way back had Victorian plates.

  • Nsw residents have come from Victoria and gone out to the pub. I have no words.

  • Remember that most hire cars have VIC plates for business / tax reasons.

  • As a Victorian living in Victoria, my message to those Victorians interstate is stay there, I don't want you back on our roads, thanks 😊

  • Yup they sure brought back Covid-19.

  • Possibly more Vic registered cars on the roads as people haven't been able to fly up and then rent a car which would most often come with NSW plates so they have driven up so probably less drivers but more noticeable because of the plates

  • I’ve always been curious what every state writes at the bottom of their licence plate, like NSW is “the first state” and VIC is “the education state”. So since then, I’ve been in tune with the different state plates.

    since when?

  • I just saw on Facebook that people gonna start throwing things at cars with Vic number plate in it. Crazy people..

    • How the hell are we going to get through this as a country with these sort of mentality?

      • +1

Wait didn't Victoria was the first state to close their border? Or did I remember wrong?

        • +2

Victoria is also the only state testing people with no symptoms. So their numbers are high but accurate. Other states will have a shock soon.

        • The Vic border hasn't been closed to other states at all.

  • I haven't noticed more VIC plates on the roads. In fact, I think I've noticed less. I think OP is just noticing VIC plates more now that they are the universal signifier of plague carriers.

    • Oh yea. With behaviour like this during a pandemic. I'd watch my words.

  • +1

Please do not come to the Northern Territory. We do not need your irresponsible behaviour going around infecting us all.

    • Dudeeee so it's OK to infect NSW?

Please Victorians.. Just stay in your state.

      • +1

No of course not, I just make that comment as the Northern Territory is home to many vulnerable communities. If COVID swept through and entered those townships the results would absolutely be devastating.

  • +1

You can spot the little blighters on the street to in their fancy clothing

  • Not Sydney- I was down towards the border for work last week and there were a LOT of caravans with VIC plates heading north

  • yes victorians there to spread the love 🤘

  • Something to bear in mind is most hire cars are registered in Victoria. I believe this is because they Ozbargin the registration fees?

      • +1

And Australia can thank NSW for allowing the Ruby Princess passengers to disembark.

As of 30 March, at least 440 passengers had tested positive for the virus. 211 were in New South Wales, 71 in South Australia, 70 in Queensland, 43 in Western Australia, 22 in the Australian Capital Territory, 18 in Victoria, three in Tasmania and two in the Northern Territory.

        • Yeah I agree. NSW Government responsible for the first wave. Victorians responsible for seocnd wave.

          • @michaelTito: A second wave isn’t possible without the first wave. NSW is liable for everything that happened after the passengers disembarked.

A class suit by businesses and individuals affected by the NSW government’s decision is entirely possible.

            • @whooah1979: I fully agree NSW government should step down. Doesn't help Victorians decided to make it worse.

Nahhh I'm only joking. Victorians didn't start a second wave. Bunch of great people. Not selfish or anything at all.

        • New South Welshman seem to have short term memory loss. It is lovely to see how divided we are as a nation…

we are going to QLD to buy hot and crispy KFC. what's your problem mate ?

  • +4

It's amazing how careful we are not to appear to be racist or discriminating against other countries, particularly regarding issues and problems that are created by their governments and not necessarily the people, who are the ones suffering….. But omg don't we like to bash each other in Australia. What a fractured society of "us and them" we are.

The people of Victoria have behaved no different than other people in Australia, they have not brought this suffering on themselves and are not suddenly deserving of it.

It is failures at a government level to correctly control quarantine sites that has caused this outbreak and the people and businesses in Victoria are suffering for it.

    • -1

There are idiotic individuals who will do the wrong thing regardless of where they live or what government measures we have in place. We have been a society without boundaries and there are individuals who have never adhered to any sort of rules before.
