Anyone Else Noticing More Victorians on The Road in Sydney?

I’ve always been curious what every state writes at the bottom of their licence plate, like NSW is “the first state” and VIC is “the education state”. So since then, I’ve been in tune with the different state plates.

Lately, has anyone else noticed a surprising increase of VIC plated cars on the road in Sydney? I haven’t even seen that many during special events like Christmas Holidays or New Years.

Other old plate slogans on NSW plates include The Premier State and Towards 2000 and (I think) The Garden State for VIC

  • It’sall those people that jumped the border before lockdown

You're just noticing more because you're looking for them.

Like when you buy a new car and all of a sudden you start seeing them everywhere.

    • +32

I know right. I've never seen so many GT2RS on the road lately.

      • +14

        excellent high yield investment!

        • Gt2rs might actually end up a good investment

      • Still not enough pink foxys.

    • I've been driving my car for 7 years and it only this year have I noticed a lot more people driving the same car.

Maybe you should not let them drive it. Or is it one of those share cars.

Never knew there was a name for it. Now I’ve heard this name I’ll surely hear it again more often.

Someone down voted the correct terminology.

        • +3

It’s like when you are in the market for a new car and all of a sudden, nearly every second car on the road is the one you are interested it. There was none and now there is heaps.

Came here to say the same thing as @indium, but this is the first time I have heard that there is a name for it. I’ve heard of it called “frequency illusion bias”.

It’s confirmation bias. You buy a Lexus and suddenly you see a lot of other tasteless Lexus drivers.

Yeah, it's almost like people don't want to buy cars built by the children of Nazis and prefer well-built driving machines that last past their warranty period.

                • @[Deactivated]: Unfortunately it's a close second for me.

My dumbest for the week was
"When we write things like 'all men are trash' we don't mean all men. And the ones that are not trash understand that we aren't talking about them".

Now I remember why I'm not on Facebook or Twitter.

I was tempted to write back something horrible about misguided young females and their crumb-chasing supporters, but I remembered the old adage, "don't argue with idiots, they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience".

      • Racist much?

You understand that Germany and Japan were both Axis powers, both guilty of genocide and post ww2 VW could be considered a British company.

I guess you might have missed that Lexus is a Japanes brand and might be talking about something Korean, North American or Chinese if your glasses are rose coloured.

Uhhh, you'd think the different coloured plates would be a dead giveaway first.

    • +5

The colour doesn't matter any more. You can get almost any colour and style (in NSW anyway, and I think elsewhere too). #AllPlatesMatter…

      • Yep. VIC standard is blue on white. But you can get white on black for a small fee (<$40), and any other colour for a bit more.

I'm sure if I moved to Sydney from Melbourne I wouldn't want local plates. Theres no need for a green slip in Vic (for renewals)

        • Check for a TAC premium (it's the equivalent to CTP/green slip).

      • #AllPlatesMatter…

        Priceless!!

    • O no… not really? I'm taking a break up there soon (NSW person)

      • Haha, yeah I counted 15 in my 15 min round trip to check the surf yesterday. Heaps of Qlder’s too.

  • It's still school holidays as well

  • Go to Tassie and you'll see them everywhere despite the border being closed for months. The reason? Everyone takes the Spirit up, buys a car or a caravan and brings it back so they're not all tourists ;)

    • Legally you are supposed to change the rego within two weeks?

And how can you transfer rego for a VIC car to someone with a TAS licence?

      • 2 weeks? Nah more like 3 months. It's not uncommon for people to drive vehicles even longer than that. One of the things I've seen cops be far more lenient on (like jaywalking).

It's a very straight forward process and people do it nationwide all the time. Just require the usual identity, proof of ownership, proof that the car is garaged here and so forth. Then it's a case of cancelling the rego for the state it's from and registering it here.

        • very straight forward process and people do it nationwide all the time

I believe this is false? You cannot transfer rego to someone interstate.

Buying a Victorian vehicle as an interstate buyer
If you live interstate and buy a Victorian registered vehicle, you can’t register it in your name in Victoria unless you have a Victorian garage address.

          https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration/buy-sell-or-tra…

          • @inherentchoice: You're assuming I'm Victorian. I was referring to TAS law.

            • -2

@Clear: You were referring to VIC rego. Not that many TAS-rego'ed cars for sale in VIC, no?

              • @inherentchoice: No as per my original comment. Go to Tasmania and you will see heaps of VIC plate cars, despite the border having been closed for non-local residents for a long time. The reason? We buy vehicles, trailers, caravans etc. on the cheap and bring them back.

                • -3

                  @Clear:

                  VIC plate cars

= VIC rego. Yes. As per your original comment, and as per this whole thread. I think you are confused here.

                  • @inherentchoice:

Anyone Else Noticing More Victorians on The Road in Sydney?

My reply to that was try going to Tassie and then you'll see heaps of VIC plated vehicles. It's not tourists, because that would be impossible, so rather it's the locals who have bought them interstate. Caused quite the stir here until people realised.

The only person who is confused is you. I know what I said. I can't be confused by what I said myself. That makes zero sense.
