  • any good? thoughts?

I lost my mifit band 4 last week, thought about holding out for the new 5
But this seems like an upgrade

I ordered the newer Bip S the other day, should be here tomorrow so I can let you know if its any good. As I understand it the 2 are pretty similar but the newer S has a slightly better screen , more fluid animations and better GPS.

I paid $125aud off ebay (impulse buy, my garmin is basically dead + I like tracking cardio), at $75 I'd have just bought this instead, can't really go wrong by the look of it.

    • Got one about 6 months ago, incredible watch especially for the price. Can't fault it. Charge it maybe once a month. It also is supported by Gadgetbridge if security and privacy is something you're interested in so it doesn't share anything back to their servers.

It's a great budget smartwatch with GPS/HR. Quick summary:

      • Battery life is great - normally a few weeks (a bit less with regular GPS use)
      • Looks similar to an Apple watch
      • Lightweight and comfortable
      • Low res 176 x 176 LCD with low colour space… but does the job
      • Data syncs via Amazfit app (alternative is Notify & Fitness app on Android)
      • Amazfit app can sync data to Apple Health and Strava (note - Amazfit app cannot sync distance to Health. Strava can sync distance data to Apple Health though).
      • Proprietary OS is basic and a bit laggy sometimes but it's mostly ok
      • Only has Alipay so no other NFC payment options
      • Has activity tracking for outdoor running, treadmill, cycling, walking
      • Call and text notifications
      • Weather
      • Download heaps of different watch faces
      • Waterproof
      • Doesn't have onboard music storage and can't sync Bluetooth devices to it

I'll probably upgrade to a Stratos at some point. My wife uses a GTR.

      • Have you tried to sync (with the amazfit app) your data to Google Fit by any chance?

I had a mi band 3 previously and it would sync steps but not HR data. Used notify & fitness to get around that, but unless that app has changed significantly the UI is a mess lol.

        • Sorry, I've only used Apple Health. The Amazfit app certainly isn't the best but I just use it to configure some watch settings and a conduit to Strava and Apple Health.

        • Edit: Just installed Google Fit. Looks like Amazfit app can't sync directly to Google Fit, but Apple Health can sync data to Google Fit.

          • @ShortyX: Yeah I just got mine.

Google fit works, downside though is that the activities don't sync to it. Just HR + Steps and google does its own calculations from there.

The figures reported by syncing strava vs google fit to MFP are wildly different, like a factor of 40%. Strava is more conservative so I think I'll be sticking with the Amazfit->Strava->MFP for calorie tracking (probably wildly inaccurate but a rough guess i always nice)

Still have the sync to GFit turned on but not sure how useful that is. I like that with Google fit you can see their estimate of calories for a particular time period in comparison to a workout.

  • says 'youth edition' in the listing.. Maybe smaller band?

    • +1

      Nope. Standard.

  • I wonder what's stopping everyone from giving NFC payment options, is it banks? the technology itself has been around for years and costs very little.

    • Security I'd say.

      • Google pay's solved that, especially if the products use android or android wear system.

        • Which these don't.

Issue with Android wear vs something like this would be the battery life requirements.

These have the claimed 40 day battery life because everything is presumably written for the exact hardware on these watches. Full wear OS devices seem to have significantly worse battery life, obviously a much better feature-set too.

My POS Garmin has a completely different implementation that is specific to them (doesn't work with my bank unfortunately). It would be neat if we could have some sort of platform agnostic way of doing this.

The technology required to run it it is a battery hog. You need an active internet connection for starters. That means either 4G/5G or WiFi in this case.

      • +2

But, most nfc enabled fitness bands don't have sim card/4g/5g.

        • +1

These bands (fitbit / garmin etc) usually use some sort of proprietary mechanism to handle the payments though.

@Tacooo is incorrect about active internet connections for these payments. In the same manner that your credit card paywave does not need an internet connection.

  • Did you consider mi band 5?

    • yes. but no usable nfc in AU

  • Got one of these, one of the problems I have is the watch freezes during workout and it resets and you lose your work out results. Apart from the freezing issue it’s a pretty good watch for what it does and the price range. If I lose this watch or if it breaks I’ll definitely invest in more and get the Amazfit GT.

  • Does anyone have the bip s here? I'm thinking of buying it via Toby deals at 88 aud (not urgent so can handle a long delivery time, but is this trustworthy or should I just use Logan or eBay?

also the bip s, can you somehow start a 5 min countdown and then commence your activity once the countdown hits 0?

currently holding fire as they will come out with Amazfit Ares soon (seems to be a more rugged bip with 100 sports) like the T-Rex is a rugged GTR. might be too big though

    • I'm thinking of buying it via Toby deals

I've bought a couple of times from them before. Their tracking notification system seems a bit off and I didn't receive a response to my postage queries until after the goods arrived.

can you somehow start a 5 min countdown and then commence your activity once the countdown hits 0?

Don't think so. Why would you want that?

      • dinghy sailing. eg 5 min countdown via timer and then track gps track via an activity eg biking…
alternatively I could start activity track earlier, go to timer use countdown and come back to activity (would it continue or does it stop if you exit to go to eg timer)

Garmin watches have specific app for it but cost at least 4 times as much

    • Mine (bip s) will arrive tomorrow so I can let you know if its utter garbage or not lol.

Ebay was a lot more expensive, $125aud and I was impatient.

    • I was looking for an upgrade on my MiBand 2 and took the plunge on Bip S from Toby Deals about 12 days ago. Their website says that they dispatch within 24-72 hours of receiving an order and send a notification with tracking details. I've heard nothing from them and my order still says 'Processing' on their website. I've emailed them (twice) and had no response (Their website also claim they respond promptly to queries).
I think the price is good and I'm assuming it will arrive eventually but I will be very wary of getting anything from Toby Deals in future.

Threeway collab between Amazon, Huawei and Xiaomi?

    • Lol spot on. That’s what I thought too.

  • I have the BIP S after going up through all of the Mi bands and also had this BIP.
My BIP died from water but that's because I pretty much never took it off except for charging so it was swimming in the pool and ocean that eventually killed it - BIP S is water resistant to 5ATM apparently so no issues so far…
I use Notify & Fitness App which gives you a lot more customisation than the Amazfit App…

    • I bought the Bip S from Aliexpress. I'm impatiently waiting for mine to arrive. How is the battery life?

      • I get about 3 weeks with a custom screen, notifications messages, alarms and GPS for about 1.5 hours a week…

      • How much was it from Aliexpress?

    • can you get calendar reminders on it from eg Gmail or outlook? using normal app or notify & fitness app…

      • Haven't tried but in Notify & Fitness you can set notifications from just about any App on your phone so I would have a guess it should work

      • I get calendar reminders from both Outlook and Gmail using the Notify and Fitness app. The MiFit app doesn't have that feature. Uninstalled that completely.

  • I had one for a week or so. does all the tracking you'd want in a very light, small package with excellent battery. really no fuss. I only sold because it didn't readily sync to strava.

    • You can sync to Strava using the Amazfit app rather than the Mi Fit app.

      • that's right, it was an aftermarket app. I couldn't get it to work and it certainly didn't feel seemless. YMMV but if you're a strava enthusiast, recommend researching first to be sure.
I ended up getting a Garmin Instinct and its been perfect.

I believe everyone is missing the “lite” bit in the description so it might not have the gps as advertised. I saw this deal yesterday but with the conflicting info, decided not to buy.

    • +2

Also, under seller’s location is HongKong so not sure if this is even local stock?

    • +1

This is Bip 1st Gen, the new Gen has Bip S which is similar to this and the Bip Lite without GPS and lesser water proof

      • The first gen BIP, has only IP68.
The BIP Lite (advertised here) is 1st gen, minus the GPS.

The BIP S is the latest gen and available starting from ~$90 AUD up to $150 AUD.
The BIP S is 5 ATM and can do in/outdoor swim tracking and music playback.

        I would buy 1st gen anymore…

        • It says GPS in the advert. So you could probably buy it and get a refund after they send the wrong item.

          Dick move though.

  • Did anyone actually get one of these and can confirm which model it is?

  • Can confirm that the spec is as per Shorty's list above
