Great plugs. Tasmota flashable. Fits in a standard socket side-by-side with the same smart plugs or regular plugs without them hanging out slightly.

    • How do you open these up to get to the chip? I can't find any screw holes or anything to open it up.

      • You don't. Use Tuya-Convert to flash them wirelessly.

    • What is the purpose of flashing tasmota? Can you explain? I don't get the point of this. I just use smart life app from tuya and gg nest mini to control it. What is the benefit of flashing tasmota?

      • +2

Tasmota is open source and doesn't report back to anywhere. Your Smart Life app works because the device firmware you currently have connects to the Tuya servers. If/when Tuya go down, go bankrupt, block access to non-Chinese users or more, your smart devices will be useless as the server they use to connect to your phone won't be there.

  • Just note the power measuring on cheap solutions is no good at low load. Try a powermate lite for that.. Apparently some libraries have them if you don't wish to buy

  • I got four for this price in a super deal a month or so back. One has already broken and you can't seem to connect it to Alexa. Paying a bit more for thr Kasa by TP Link is advisable.

    • Can you please elaborate on the broken one? Did it blow internal components? What were you using that one for? Thanks.

      • +4

No, it didn't blow. It just won't power anything anymore but it's probably more to do with the smart part of it. It's not so smart! I've tried a reset and that hasn't helped. So I don't fancy the chances of the other ones surviving.

FYI, I forgot to say that I got four for $29 so this is a terrible deal.

        • I have been looking at getting some with the intent on flashing and doing some specialised tasks with them but I have heard more than a few reports of complete failure. I was trying to see if there was a pattern with them being used with high loads.

          • +1

@bargainpersona: I've had 4 of them in continuous use for about 6 months and haven't had any issues.
One is on my washing machine and the usb ports power a GH mini, another is on my TV and ps4, another has been powering my electric heater and the last one really only recharges my laptop but I use it more for the usb ports to charge my phone overnight.

          • +1

@bargainpersona: I had one fail immediately. Kogan sent out a new 4 pack to replace it, so I got 7 for $40 a while ago.
I've flashed most of mine, and one has been running a 700W water pump for about a month or two, no problems.

I took the failed one apart, hoping to salvage the ESP board, but I was way out of my depth. I did take photos of the internals if anyone needs them.

Would these smart plugs work well on a powerboard?

    • I connected them to 2 powerboards for my TV (living room) and my PC respectively, currently still working ok for 2 months. I feeling Kogan electronic products somehow unreliable, especially deal with customer service remotely. Bought at $50 for 4packs at that time.

    • You can buy smart powerboards so you wouldn't need multiple plugs, but can still have individual control.

Use to be $39 for set of 4.
