The Eero officially came on sale in Australia on 24 June 2020 and is already on sale two days later. The preorder offered two units for $299, this sale has three units for the same price, but without the preorder bonus of an echo dot.

These units are usually considered in the same class as the Tplink Deco M5s, but I’ll let better informed people comment on that if they want to.

At $299 these are priced well for those looking for end of financial year home office tax deductions.

  • Looks good. Thanks.

I was strongly considering getting these (based off this recommendation), but then I realised there is an Eero Pro and a normal Eero. This model—the latter—didn't get great reviews, unfortunately.

For TPG nbn users, this doesn't come with VLAN tagging

    • +1

I learned this the hard way with Internode. Spent hours reprogramming another router to act as a vlan switch.

    • Yeah eero only has IPoE and no PPPoE option and this rules out many ISPs.

      • Do you mind share an article or link about this. i am curious to learn about this configuration.

        many thanks :)

        • Do you want to know about IPoE vs PPPoE protocols or do you want to know the ISPs that eero works with?

          • @Twix: IPoE vs PPPoE , guessing I can google to find out, unless you have something in simple form.

Would be good to know about my ISP as well, unless if you know already. I am with iPrimus 100mbps plan (opticomm)

            • +1

@prime47: In Australia every ISP uses the IPoE or PPPoE protocol and eero being an American based company decided not to support the PPPoE protocol. IPoE is a newer protocol and connects automatically when selected in the router settings. PPPoE is an older protocol and you need to input your ISP username and password and if your ISP requires it VLAN 802.1q.

iPrimus use the PPPoE protocol and VLAN 802.1q of 100. Are you looking to purchase the eero?

              • @Twix: I was thinking, but I guess it won't be good given what you said above?

                • +1

@prime47: With eero and iPrimus you need to use the router you have now and you loose a few eero features

With other routers that supports PPPoE and VLAN 802.1q you can stay with iPrimus and not use the router you have now.

If you want eero without the extra unnecessary router you need to swap to an ISP that uses IPoE.

@Twix: Thanks heaps for the useful information. Got my research hat ready for weekend :D

              • @Twix: Hey Twix, sorry to bug you but you seem to know your stuff. We exchanged conversation in the Deco M5 deal for $240 and I ended up buying it as you said it would offer a direct connect to the router instead of having to use the modem as well. However, I can't get the Deco M5 base unit to get an internet connect direct with the router where as I can through the modem. Any ideas? I asked the Deco forum and they suggested changing to AP mode but before I do I wondered whether that makes sense to you as it involves 20 mins of u plugging stuff and resetting all three Decos and setting them up again plus another 20 mins to change it back if it doesn't work.

                • +1

@C0mbat: @Twix: Ignore my last question. I didn't have the right ISP login details. This is why it was fine through my existing router as I didn't need to enter them via that method. All is good now.

                  • @C0mbat: Now do you have a direct connection from NBN connection device to M5?

          • @Twix: Do you know the ISPs it will work with?
I'm with ABB which use IPOE I believe.

            • @linnaen: ISPs that use the IPoE protocol are Aussie BB, Optus, Superloop and Telstra and their subsidiary brand Belong.

      • +1

I wish ISPs were upfront about protocols. Should be a warning on sign up that NBN router is required, not standard

  • This article prefers the deco m5 over these:

I’d be proper pissed if I preordered a 2 pack and then the dropped this. Poor form.

    • Order again and return the preordered one?

    • +1

Bought the three pack (with free Amazon Show 5) for $429.
      Am proper pissed.

      • Same here with the 2 pack. Spoke with amazon and the beet they can do is let you return the first order and then re order the cheaper ones. But they take the cost of the free item off the price of the original purchase.

        • Surely that’s only if you don’t return the free item

  • +2

They don't look good value for money, even at the sale price.

  • Also available as 2 for $209 on my screen, discount applied at checkout.

    • For clarity:

      1 x 3 pack for $299
      2 x 1 packs for $209

      • Thanks for the edit mod.

  • The downside to both the m5 and the eero is that they don't have a dedicated backhaul.

  • anyone using these with Optus NBN? I need to replace the free black optus router but not sure if those are compatible with Optus NBN
    Thanks

    • eero & Optus is compatible.

Ordered a 3-pack yesterday and just seen this now. I was able to cancel before it shipped so now have just reordered the same 3 pack, but with a decent saving!!

Then my posting effort was not in vain.

  • Will this work with Superloop NBN?

    • +1

      eero & SL is compatible.

      RRP $299 should be $429 i think

    • 2 for $209

    • Pretty much the same deal that was posted a few days back. So not convinced that this is a good setup considering the speed between the rest of it competitors. The price thou is pretty decent for a mesh setup.

      • I’m using the Tenda system atm which is cheaper than Amazon and it’s performing great for a mesh system

    • +1

technically the same as this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/548682
OP of that post expired it even though offer did not expire as it appears to be the "regular" price

    • +1

TP LINK DECO M5/M9 all the way ..nothing beats them..however, I do appreciate OP Posting this deal.. Cheers..

      • +1

Why do you think nothing beats them?

      • better than Google MESH?

    • +1

Just for reference. I did a bit research on this yesterday. No PPPoE as far as I can see. Meaning you would still need a modem to configure for NBN.

      • Yeah eero only has IPoE and no PPPoE protocol option. You don't need an extra unnecessary modem if your ISP uses the IPoE protocol on NBN FTTP, FTTC, HFC.

PSA: you loose a few eero features when bridged. Switch to an IPoE protocol ISP to get all the eero options back!

  • Price is back to 429$ now

  • Note to mods and other posters - the price keeps switching between the full RRP and the sale price, so it’s a game of cat and mouse tagging this deal expired and not expired.
