Are these worth the extra $100 over say the samsung monitor posted here before? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54087

    • +6

For most things, yes. Ultrasharps have IPS which results in purer colours and keeps those colours at very wide viewing angles. Depending on what model you get, IPS panels are usually not quite as quick of a response time if you ask a quake nerd, but they are still pretty damn quick - frankly i cant tell the difference in response time - I can see the difference in colour, though.

Note that this model has a few less features than most of the others, though (eg. no HDMI and less ports - if that kind of thing bothers you) and is 2ms slower than the other 24" ultrasharp (U2410) but has higher theoretical max contrast.

since I switched to IPS monitor, I've never looked back. TN screen is simply UGLY. is like comparing artificial flavoured instant noodle vs a 5 star gourmet dish. YES, it is that bad.

      • +4

Oi! 2 minute noodles are awesome! Just not the Fantastic or Maggi branded ones.

I bought this monitor about two weeks ago and have it in a dual monitor configuration with a Dell E248WFP (A TN panel). The U2412M (IPS) is the cheaper sibling of the U2410, which comes with an even better IPS panel, and is factory calibrated. In a side by side comparison with the TN panel, these were my observations.

      1. The IPS has far superior viewing angles over the TN panel. However, when both monitors are calibrated as closely as possible to each other, as honestly as I can tell, for dead on viewing, there isn't much of a difference in day to day use. The Dell TN panel is pretty decent and compares very favourably with the IPS.

      2. The IPS also has a far more aggressive anti-glare coating. Some consider this to be too-aggressive, and indeed, it is quite noticeable. However, I find it works fine for me because I have a lot of glare coming in through the windows.

      3. The screen backlighting is very uniform on the IPS, and consequently, so is the colour reproduction. This can be very important for people who do photo touch ups etc. but not so noticeable for viewing movies or gaming.

      4. The IPS has a USB hub as well as display port connectivity. You can buy a USB hub for 5 bucks though.

      5. My impression: Overall, the quality of the IPS is better. However, it may be more worthwhile to buy 2 screens or a bigger 27" screen if you don't deal with colour or viewing angle sensitive work, because the Dell TN panels perform well enough. The IPS is much more pleasant in very subtle ways, and I personally like owning it, and if you want a step up in quality, this is certainly worth it.

Thanks for a REALLY informative and useful post :-)
This will actually help others in making their decision…

        • +3

Glad you found it useful :-) One thing I forgot to mention is that, being in the ultra-sharp range, this IPS also comes with better ergonomics - tilt, rotate, height adjust, the works. This is something that many low end monitors lack, and you end up having to do something silly like stacking books underneath to compensate. All things considered, with the moneyback-co discount included, this is a very good deal.

      • Hi,

        Thanks for the info.

I currently have a MacBook Pro 15" and a 24" Asus monitor i use for my desktop set up on my desk. I am looking for a monitor i can set up for my Xbox 360 on the same desk. I am looking for a 24" screen and i understand a high response time is important for games, particularly FPS's.

Would you recommend this screen? I have seen other Samsung screens for around $185 (BX2450) but everyone raves about the Dell IPS screens.

        Thanks

        • Afaik, and as others have mentioned, the response times in these monitors pose no problems for gaming. About quality ravings - my honest opinion, verified by some friends, is that the difference is not as dramatic as some make it out to be (unless those doing the raving have ultra colour sensitive cones in their eyes or something ;-) ). I too bought into the hype and bought this monitor expecting such differences and I did not find any in comparison to my 3 year old TN panel. The differences are subtle, not dramatic, although very relevant when doing specialized work (i.e. graphics editing).

However, since you are buying this for x-box gaming, you will probably find that the viewing angles are far far superior. So no colour distortions depending on where you sit. That might be something to consider.

          HTH!

        • +1

did you just end with How the Hell!

  • I have a 2407wfp, it is magnificent to say at least.

Would this go well together, being an ultra-sharp model as well

  • +1

Still looking for that decent and cheap 120Hz monitor…

  • +2

wow these are getting cheap, i remember when i paid 600 for the 2407wfp. and they are 16:10 ratio not the crappy 16:9

    • Ahem… I remember over $1k…

      • Indeed. $1500 for the 2405FPW many years ago and it's still going strong. This monitor is tempting though.

    • Current U2410 is $699, so, Dell's quality monitors (not this one "M" cheapo) still keep their value.
Still have 2x 2405s - great even by todays standards but their dot-pitch and resolution is no longer exciting.
Using U2711 - dot-pitch and gamut is an order above everything else. You couldn't pry 2560x1440 from my cold dead hands.

  • Including 7% off this is $259.47 Shipped.

    • What steps did you use to get this?

      • Just noticed the 7% moneybackco mention by the OP…

    • Is that using moneybackco or is there some different way to get further discount? edit: I understand now

      • How do I do the moneybackco?

        Mind sharing?

I've signed in to moneybackco and when I browse for Dell, I don't see the item listed.

        • go thru the link on moneybackco to navigate to Dell's site and make the purchase there. That is, do it as the usual way but must connect to Dell via MBC.

  • +1

I brought one of these last time - was mostly worried about the ghosting and Lag in games

Dont see any :) happy camper

I had the Chimei 22" 5 ms tn and its a great step up

  • how is anti glare on this one ?
is it as bad as on 27 inch one ?

    • The anti-glare is very strong.

      • But is it too strong? i.e. grainy?

  • +1

No Hdmi kills it for me. My laptop only has VGA and HDMI. I really don't wanna buy an adaptor for this

    • +2

HDMI-DVI adapters are only $5 on ebay. Peanuts!

      • I bought one from eBay and waited 3 weeks. it was faulty.
So I don't like frankly to wait that long for a poor quality adapter and still without the display.

        • you could buy a hdmi-dvi cable (not adapter). Last time I bought one it cost me about $6 for a 2m one from some online AV store in sydney (srry can't remember). While I understand how adapters are dodgy, I doubt using a cable with the two different connectors will break.

its just that most of the nicer panel monitors don't have in-built speakers, so they mostly don't have a hdmi connector. although lots of the newer entry-lvl full-hds do if you don't care too much. :D

  • A stupid question. How do i use moneybackco on this? I can only find desktops and notebooks from Dell there.

  • Guys is this a matte or gloss screen? I am used to matte but damn if the ips in the Imacs don't look glorious in gloss.

    • It's matte. Does anyone know of a good deal on a glossy ips monitor?

      • +1

This. The mac fanboy in me wants my PC to be as apple like as possible.

  • Great monitor if you want to have an Eyefinity setup as well and this has a display port which most monitors do not have.

  • need to add the M to U2412M. for a minute i thought it was the U2410 for $279 and had a heart attack cause i just bought the U2417 for $579.

    • +1

      wah u living in 2016?

    • Whats the difference between the U2412M and U2410?

EDIT: Just saw the gamut. lol.

  • +3

Bought this monitor the last time it was on sale. It's fantastic for the price, and is pretty accurate for what I use it for (photography and graphic design). BUT, you will need to calibrate it, as the default settings are pretty bad and wayyy to bright.

Detailed review of this monitor + calibrated settings and ICC profile to match can be found here: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2412m.htm

spend $80 more and get a 27 inch instead

    • +2

Please link a 27" Ips monitor for $350…

      • Trolls will be trolls!

  • I got one of these to replace a Philips 23" TN the last time they came down in price. In addition to what others have said about colour reproduction, I do notice the extra v-res that the 16:10 ratio gives, and the Dell stand is sooooo much better than any non-dell monitors I've had. It is fantastically sturdy and adjustable.

Indeed what watwatwat said. If you have "best deal guaranteed", it would be a good idea to put your price here, or just post it as a deal. I'm sure you'll get many coming your way if you can do this Dell UltraSharp for less than $279 delivered.

  • bought a laptop from these guys. no complaints.

considering this monitor, any idea if this monitor has a HDMI port?

    • no HDMI sorry~

      CONNECTIVITY
1 Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI-D) with HDCP
      1 DisplayPort(DP)
      1 Video Graphics Array (VGA)
      1 USB 2.0 upstream port
      4 USB 2.0 downstream ports
DC power connector for Dell Soundbar

      • So what are the disadvantages of not having HDMI? If I buy a blueray player and want to watch a video on it, or hook up a video game system, can I still do that if I buy an adapter? Thanks

        • +1

Disadvantage will be not being able to plug & play.

As someone has mentioned, you'll need a HDMI-DVI cable. For the aidio, most bluray players should have an audio output that you can use to hook up to a stereo. I use a PS3 and using the provided A/V cable I hooked the audio cables to my stereo.

Actually the first time I hooked it up the PS3 to my Dell 24" 1080 monitor, the PS3 would not recognise it. I had to turn it off and hold onto the on button during the next cycle on. This will reset the display to the basic 480p and from there reconfigured the PS3 to display in full HD (1080p).

    • Comment by user "Fox" is absolutely correct. If you are looking for monitors with HDMI options, kindly put in a query through to [email protected]. We endeavour to respond within 24 Hours.

      NanoByte Team.

  • Any recommended monitor with both HDMI and component input that in the sub $250 range?

    • Unfortunately not, you won't find component on an entry level monitor.

  • $242 delivered from Nanobyte is tempting, except I can't find any mention of this company on OB, Whirlpool etc (except for smitch who joined up here 13 hours ago), and the rep is getting torn a new one on this other deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54805
I tried to get Dell to match that price, but the sales rep I had on chat said he just couldn't reduce the price any further. My 8 year old monitor has just died, is this the best value monitor in this category we are likely to see for a while, or is anyone holding out for something else? Thanks folks!

    • +3

There are so many red flags going up with that guy:

      • very cheap price
      • shit website
      • tries to prove legitimacy of business by claiming an ABN which any monkey can obtain
      • new member
      • posts shitty other deal
      • creates a new account to back up shitty other deal
      • is currently "In Penalty Box."

Just saying that I wouldn't risk it, personally.

      • +1

Thanks for the summary. I almost went for it but realise it's not worth the risk for ~$40 saving vs >$200 outgoing cash. I managed to get hold an online Dell representative and have been trying to get price match with Nano's price here and he genuinely tried since yesterday, escalating the matter to his bosses's boss. Finally, 2 hours ago he told me that Dell can't match the price.

      • +1

Isn't it just odd that the 2 supporting Nano's business on the same day, yesterday?

      • I took the plunge and order one through nanobytes, they seem to go to a lot of trouble if its a scam. I'll keep everyone posted on my endeavour.

      • Thanks for the advice watwatwat! After getting through the entire u2412m thread on WP, and also a few on 16:9 vs 16:10, I placed an order directly with Dell. Can't wait to get the monitor now :)

        • What's the expected delivery date from Dell?

        • I ordered the monitor on Tuesday just before 5 pm. Was talking to the sales rep and he said he could speed up the delivery process for me. Got a call today saying that it's coming in on Friday. Whether it's due to his help or not, I dunno, but 3 days delivery is sweet.

      • Update: My order has been processed by Nanobyte and i was given an expected delivery on or before 25th of November.

Great customer service from them, and speedy processing. Now to wait and see if the package turns up ^_^

        • Edit: opps 25th of October

        • Just got my monitor today from Nanobyte solutions, took 2 days from the order date. One of the best online companies I've ever deal with, awesome customer service. I guess the risk was worth it.

      • We all have different risk thresholds and this is just under mine. $242 is too tempting so I have also gone for a Nanobyte one.
Emails and Invoice are professional. Paid with BPay.

They actually have an online store at www.nbstore.com.au although this deal isnt listed, not sure how often its updated.
Happy so far, will report back in a couple of weeks when it arrives.

  • Not sure if this one is good enough for gaming considering it has 8ms response time. Any idea about the iput lag?

  • Quick Update. The U2412M I ordered from NanoByte on 14-Oct for $242 inc delivery just arrived (18-Oct).
Including the weekend it took 1 full business Day. The ETA NanoByte provided was 26th Oct.
I am sure this isn’t typical speeds, how could it be, but I am very very Impressed.

    • Yup mine was delivered the same day too :)
Fantastic monitor, can't tell the difference in response times from my 5ms monitor while gaming but colours are much more accurate.
