My Computer Build | Advice Please

Hello,

I am building a new computer for myself to last a few years.. I built my current gaming computer in 2014 and it's time for an upgrade.

Here are the parts I am looking at:

A question I have is whether some parts are worth waiting for a special. For example, I cannot see the the b550m being on special anytime.

Thanks!!

  • Save $25 on Ryzen 5 CPU via Amazon

Save $100 on RX 5700XT via eBay. Claim a free 480GB SSD via GIGABYTE website.

Savings brought to by the Honey Scrimshaw browser extension.

I would not worry too much about the Thermaltake Contac Silent12 cooler, I have the exact cooler you listed and it's not significantly better than AMD's stock solution. Either go without it or consider an upgrade to a bigger Noctua cooler with more aluminium.

    • From what I understand the Gigabyte coils have a higher chance to break and that the Sapphire Pulse was a better option in terms of reliability. I might not be recalling what the exact issue with the card was. "

Also, I don't have eBay plus.

Thanks for the Ryzen link I didn't see that one when I searched.

      • Looks like I did not recall this information correctly. I have changed to the Gigabyte video card.

  • Ryzen 5 3600 has been on sale quite a few times, you can save maybe $20 here if you catch a sale

RAM has been on sale for the last 2 weeks (Amazon AU), you could get 32GB (eg. Vengeance LPX same clock speed) for around $200, which can save you around $20

RX 5700XT price is still higher than pre-COVID, but it has gone down below $700, in the low $600 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/546229, not the same card but as you see)

For other parts I cant say for sure as I'm not familiar with those specific you selected

    • Thanks for the help! I'll definitely scout around for a RAM deal. I'm not married to the one in my list, so I'll check out the Vengeance.

  • Memory is really cheap right now. Don't think you are going to get a real drop. Plus it usually means all the other component prices are low. With the list, do you have to go mAtx? Have seen cheaper Atx boards. Also have the option of going x570 for the same price. You would then look at least $40 more for an Atx case.

    • Reasoning for the B550 is possible future proofing.

I am going for the mATX as the PC I use at the moment is an ATX board and the whole PC is HUGE! I am wanting something smaller.

Is there any downgrade when it comes to ATX vs mATX?

      • Well, those b550 mAtx boards are new to the market. So a bit pricey. You can get an x570 with support for PCI-e4.0 + better vrm for the same price. I think they also handle pcie lanes differently afaik vs b550. There was a ATX Mid cases which are on average 18x8" and 19" depth.

  • That motherboard looks alright, I just got the MSI B450M Mortar Max $180, may do you depending on needs. The Max boards is supposed to support next gen CPUs (I heard?) don't know if the 550s do anyway? Ram is cheap enough too, 3200Mhz G. Skill or Corsair.

Still annoying af no builtin wifi these days, no ARGB (ie JRAINBOW)only the 12v 4-pin dumb RGB, no M.2 heatsink shield, just stuff to add to the price of the cheaper boards.

    • Yeah, inbuilt WIFI should be a thing! The main reasons for going for this board are the M.2 shield, WIFI and the USB-C port. Plus the potential of future proofing.

      • Yeah that's fair enough, usually end up replacing everything after 8 years but not really a gamer.

Spent 29 on a good tp Link wirelessly, 19 heat shield, 25 on a RGB converter.. FFS.

Would have kept a Lian Li case if the mobo had a USB C Front header, felt like you needed to fill that case up with RGB fans and radiators but. Ended up with some More RGB fans anyway as the Case ones don't have have pwm, never ends. the 3 pin 4 pin fan stuff and RGB is the most annoying part.

  • What monitor will you be using?

    • I currently use 2x Viewsonic 27in monitors VA2719-2K-SMHD

  • For what its worth the new ps5 and xbox series x will both be running 8 core cpus. Considering most games really get designed to run on consoles possibly an 8 core would be more "future proof". 6 cores is plenty for now though. The B550 motherboard will atleast let you upgrade to new cpus Zen 3 and beyond, If you wanted to run 6 cores for a bit then upgrade in the future.

  • Apart from the MOBO, Size of the SSD and PWR SUP, any other major difference? any that would make it faster?

This would perform just as good?
