Google Home Mini Charcoal/Chalk $19 @ Bunnings

2470

Good price. Self explanatory. I can see available stock in some stores(eg Keysborough) but please do call up to confirm.

Google Home Mini is a smart speaker with the Google Assistant built in. Use your voice to control lights, switches and more from popular home automation systems, like Philips Hue, Telstra Smart Home and D-Link.

No match for the new generation offered by Officeworks today.

    • This one from Bunnings is the older gen.?

      • +8

Yup. This is the first gen “Home” Mini.
Vs 2nd gen “Nest” Mini that OW had on earlier

        • +3

Off topic - why the hell change the name? Who says nest?? 'Hey mate, wanna come round me nest?' 🤔

          • +2

@Skinnerr: Because they bought a company named Nest maybe.

          • +4

@Skinnerr: They were getting hate from their bird demographic when they used “Home”
Gotta pander to the haters, I guess…

          • @Skinnerr: Nest was more of well known brand in home security in the US before Google bought them so Google rebranded their range to nest.

Doesn't really transfer well in Australia though.

    • found one thanks

      What are the differences?

      • -6

I see no difference they still do the same thing. The above is not much improvement

And they name it as Nest which is silly

        • +6

I’ve had both. The new one is a significant improvement.

          • +1

            @mblack77: HOW?

What actual features make it better than the last one? Because apart from a screw mount it doesn't seem like much tbh.

            • @Ti-au: the audio is better.

              • @halfass3d: But if i wanna pause it i can tell google to pause it, isnt that the whole point of the thing.

              • @halfass3d: Agreed, I have both generations and the later one does sound better… more bass. If you're planning on listening to music on these things, you're better off with gen 2. All the other google stuff, they are the same

            • @Ti-au: The improvements in sound when talking/playing music is noticeable, I really like the sound coming from the Nest, I have two of those and one older Home mini. Which now lives in the least used room as the speaker is bad.

            • +1

@Ti-au: Exactly too many down votes on me for nothing

        • -1

To add to the output being better, the 3 mics really make a difference, the Nest mini picks up my voice while in my shower and music is blasting at full volume, my home mini struggled that even at lower volumes.

      • The Home Mini also has play pause controls, via a long press on the sides. Nest Mini is meant to sound much better though.

    • I got 3 today as a price bet gen 2s $17.10 each

      • Nice one!!! How? Please explain!

        • I went to bunnings they beat $21 by 10%

  • Good deal but is it a good Nest egg?

  • +2

How different is Google Nest from Google home?

    • +3

Nest has a better speaker, wall mountable and different charging port, that's about it really

      • +3

Extra microphone for more clarity too apparently and supposedly built stronger.

        • +5

so it doubles as a throwing weapon?

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: everything does. Under the right circumstances, grasshopper chickenface.

    • Nest Mini has barely noticeable better sound, a notch for hanging on a hook, adds a touch "play/pause" instead of just volume, and uses a proprietary barrel jack power connector instead of mini USB.

      • +14

I dunno I found the sound to be a lot better but that's just me!

      • +10

The wall-mount is needed for mounting in the pool room on my wall of unnecessary bought bargains.

      • +3

The Home mini also has a pause/play function. Can confirm my home mini can do this.

      • +5

Don't agree - the difference in sound quality is night-and-day.

      • I can hear bass on the Nest, sound is much better imo.

      • +1

This is incorrect. The sound difference is significant.

    • Apparently there are hand gestures too?

      • +51

        That's the Italian version

Out of stock in most places in Victoria. I haven't been able to find anywhere that it's in stock. :(

    • I think they changed their system to show out of stock.

When the Officeworks deal was posted, the Bunnings website where showing in stock, for local stores near me.

As soon as Bunnings price matched Officeworks, the Bunning's site says out of stock. It could be coincidence, or not.

      • I saw this price before the Officeworks deal was posted. Bunnings was showing out of stock for metro stores in NSW, VIC and SA

  • I'm curious what people actually use this for other than a Bluetooth speaker? Is it actually used? Can't our phones do everything else?

    • +1

I have an iPhone and most my Smart plugs / lights don't work with Siri so having these around isn't too bad. But mostly just music/random questions that I find it answers better than Siri

    • +2

It's more useful for people with iPhones. You can't say "Hey Google" to your iPhone. And Siri is nowhere near as good as Google. So I would say it's more useful to people with iphones than it is to people with android phones. That said, it's still useful for everyone as you may be in a room of your house and not have your phone on you.

      • +2

you can actually say "Hey Google" to your iPhone. It's set up as via Shortcuts app on iPhone. You have to have google home and google assistant installed on your iPhone. When you say hey google, Siri will open google assistant and you say your commands from there. Also, when I use 1 command often enough via google assistant on iPhone, when I say "Hey siri, turn off all lights", Siri will open google assistant and pass on the "turn off all lights" command. :)

        • Wow I didn't realise this, I thought all it worked by saying "Hey Siri open Google" followed by then having to say Hey Google. Handy knowledge!

    • +2

Mostly music for me (wifi not bt), also controlling my smart lights, setting timers, weather, stupid questions.

    • +2

I have two, other than music, the one in the kitchen gets the most use. I find it much easier to use the voice control to set a timer or change the song rather than picking up my phone when I'm busy cooking. I also commonly use them to set reminders, add things to my shopping list, or ask if it will rain soon.

      • so….will it?

        • +3

          pay the $19 first

    • +4

I picked up the nest mini (2nd gen to this) earlier today from Bunnings (price beat the OW deal). So far i control the wifi lights in my house which is much faster and more convienient than opening the app on my phone or grabbing the remote in the kitchen. Just saying "Hey google, turn the kitchen lights on/off" has been worth it just for that.

The more "Smart" devices you have in your house the more you would get out of this as it's easier to just ask it to do something as opposed to pulling out your phone, unlocking it, opening app, performing the action you want.

Other things that have been handy are simple things like asking time, weather, setting reminders, asking what time Bunnings closes haha

As a stand alone bluetooth speaker i rate it as horrible and will personally never use it to listen to music but that's comparing it to my Harmon Kardon Onyx and JBL bluetooth speaker. Although saying "play calming sounds" is quite cool as it will play various scenes like birds in a forest.

    • +1

imo, for people owning only a single google home device and are not invested in smart devices, its more or less a gimmicky device.

but in my use-case, by having multiple google home mini/nests across multiple rooms i can use my voice to control my lights, heaters in different rooms. and also there is a feature called broadcast that sends out a voice message to each device.

and also, being able to play music on each google home device simultaneously really comes in handy for parties etc

    • +1

I use it for the usual. Smart home control, Music stream, local weather and live traffic report before I go somewhere. My 5yo uses it to settle arguments with us. I also use it as an intercom when I want to get my wife or kids attentions from other rooms without needing to yell out or if in away from home and my wife isn't picking up the phone.

    • +1

      Can't our phones do everything

I use it to find my phone.

      "OK Google, where's my phone?"

      Phone stars ringing.

  • OOS in NSW most stores

    • Showing as in stock at Lithgow, which is a weird non-warehouse Bunnings and usually never has stock of anything.

  • OOS in TAS, hours ago before this post. Sad.

  • this is first gen and i got it for free 3 years ago when i ordered my pixel 2 XL.

    • +2

      Congratulations?

    • +4

      i bought a snickers 3 years ago

  • Out of stock most places. has been since earlier officework deal.

    • The officeworks deal was for the Nest mini which is the 2nd gen to this. I would say this is OOS because it is the older model. The Nest mini is $48 at Bunnings.

  • This has been out of stock for most metro stores in NSW, VIC and SA when I checked this morning.

  • +1

Probably not available in WA? Goes back to the home site automatically

    • +1

Yeah, Bunning's don't sell/stock most electrical goods in WA. So we miss unfortunately often miss out.

      • +2

Wesfarmers letting down its own state.

    • Only Bunnings Armadale stocks these kind of products.

  • +3

Don't go to Werribee despite the website showing stock available. I just wasted my trip there and they couldn't find any.

  • +1

    Palmerston NT has some

  • -1

    Google home bug…..?

  • seriously why buying this? soon gumtree will be full of nest mini ie gen 2 and you can get some for $25-30

    • pretty sure those reselling won't sell them at 25

  • +36

Once again, stock is not accurate (this is just what's coming from the website). Bunnings did update their security so scraping this was not the easiest. Unfortunately, the quantity remaining is no longer available.

Got a free Nest mini with the YouTube premium deal a while back.

Can't say I'd get another to try and create a stereo, they are fairly cheap sounding speakers.

Handy for a bit of voice control (between that and the mobile can cover most of a flat..no question of the day though!

Nest mini is better. Wouldn't buy this now that the second gen is out.

      ???

As much radiation as you get from a Radio and a Router… ???

When they are on, I would assume so. Having these multiplies those levels of radiation. I have been downvoted hard. I believe in science. I don’t believe scientists really have an answer to this yet.

        • Do you also believe that 5G spreads coronavirus?

          • @kerfuffle: No, there is obviously no correlation. Is there a correlation between mobile phones and brain cancer, some say yes.

  • Damn missed out

  • Can this be paired with the nest mini? I have both connected in the same room but the option doesn't appear.

    • nope

For an immersive music and media experience, you can pair two speakers together to set up stereo sound. Stereo sound pairing is available on Google Home, Google Nest Mini (2nd gen), Google Home Mini (1st gen) and Google Home Max. Both devices need to be the same model (eg. two Nest Minis or two Home Minis), and located in the same room.

      • Thanks, do you know why that is? They seem almost the same

        • You can create a speaker group with any two speakers you have in the Google Home app. They won't be stereo but they will be playing the same music at the same time. I have one pair: Google Home Max with JBL Link Portable. And another pair: Google Home Max with Google Nest Mini. Works fine and in sync. They each play mono sound but it does the job of spreading music across a room.
