  • The product listing says the battery is "long lasting". Anyone with experience on this set can provide some indication on what real life usage is with the battery? Do they need to be recharged every 3 months?

    • +1

“Netgear says the battery will last for six months in the Arlo Pro 2 under normal use”

But since they are lithium batteries I imagine charging them before they die would be ideal for long battery life-span so I would say charge every 3-4 months.

Thanks. Although this might just be a handful of people with devices that have failed, the other details around support and quality of the product are hard to digest: https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/netgear-arlo-pro-2….

Would be good to get some feedback on this product from OzBargainers before I bite the bullet.

        • +1

I can give feedback on the Arlo 1st gen (before the Arlo Pro). It has never missed a beat (product & cloud storage).
Only issue was with an unsecured camera which fell on the ground and ended up with a red tint to the image.
Arlo promptly replaced the camera (back then) and all was good.

From my understanding Arlo has run into issues since the Arlo Pro 3 & onwards, and all models previous are quite reliable.

        • Before you by check this thread. It is marked solved but it is not!! (Models Pro and Pro2)

In the past month, the batteries on my two cameras have lost their ability to retain power. I am currently recharging them ever week at best..
If the camera could retain its power, its an excellent product.

    • +1

It depends on how you've configured it (to record video every time motion/audio is sensed) and the area it's covering (if you're pointing it at a road or swaying trees, in which case motion-sensing rules will constantly trigger and your battery will drain within a day).

I intentionally position mine in areas that will only have motion if someone/something is moving (i.e. no trees or things that sway in the wind) and an individual camera's battery has lasted well over two months without charging - though you should note that's because it hasn't triggered.

The "up to" capacity is always idealistic, so take it with a grain of salt and expect maybe a third of that if you think it'll trigger several times in a week perhaps.

    • +1

It depends how much activity the camera catches. If you place a camera in a high traffic area, such as with cars or people constantly passing by, you may get anywhere from a week to a month's battery life before needing to recharge. If you use them in an area that only gets occasional movement, you may get a few months out of the camera before needing to recharge. Also depends on what video quality settings you use.

The Arlo Pro 2 cameras are convenient and quite good, although the newer Pro 3's would give a better quality picture. I also use the Arlo Ultras which are 4K and provide a better picture yet again. Just depends on your budget and what you need the cameras for.

Happy to answer any questions. I currently use a mix of Arlo 1st Gen, Arlo Pro 2 and Arlo Ultra cameras.

      • Hi, quick question. I'm using Arlo 1st gen and quite interested in this Arlo Pro 2
to get this installed where 24/7 recording is required. (Shop)
If I buy 3 cams or 4 cams package, do they come with 3 or 4 seperated AC adapter so I can plug it in for continuous recording?
If yes, do they gets uploaded to Cloud right? having said that, we have limited storage on cloud unless you pay for extra, how many hours of recording can be stored on the cloud for now?

        • No. One charger per “kit”.

Takes micro USB charger, so you’ve probably got 10+ lying around the house already.

I’m running 9 cameras on the free plan (two kits, with delegation). Free plan gives you 7 days of coverage. Not bound by hours uploaded, just after 7 days it gets deleted. You can easily download footage before the 7 days.

Arlo is a great and easy to use product. I love it, but for a business? There might be more robust solutions.

Some footage from an Arlo Pro 2.

        • As seedyrom mentioned, you only get one charger per kit, but the chargers from the 1st gen should work the same for the Arlo Pro 2. If you buy individual add-on cameras, they also come with chargers.

You can also record footage to a USB stick if you connect it at the back of the base station, that way you can store footage longer than the 7 day period that you get for free. The only issue is that you need to eject the USB stick and then load onto a computer and browse through the files, but handy as a backup.

          • @BargainHunter09: Thank you for the advice guys!

          • @BargainHunter09: Sorry but just one more question, the AC adapter for extra cameras if I want to be 24/7, can I use any ac adapter with micro usb cable? any specific requirements for the ac adapter? output requirement, etc.. Thanks in advance!

            • @Dalgona456: Just try and match the same power specs as the arlo charger. Given that you have the first gen cameras, you can test out any other chargers you have at home to see if they charge and work as desired.

    • Depends entirely on how you set them up. If they are in a high traffic area with lots of detections (real or false), you could potentially run a battery flat in weeks, but if it only detects a few movements a day and shoots for maybe 20 seconds each time, the batteries should last 3-5 months.

In general on my busiest Pro 2 I would get about 105 days and it would record about 150 minutes of video in that time. The quietest Pro 2 is about 160 days and 60 minutes of video in that time.

Be aware though that Arlo is playing games with the Pro 2 video quality, and it has turned to custard big time - currently very pixelated and probably resembles maybe 360P video quality - nowhere close to 1080P. This seems to be because they have reduced the video bitrate to such a low level that the quality has dropped off the edge completely - allegedly to save server space on the 7 day free subscriptions.

See this thread in the Arlo support forums - they have marked it as Solved, but they haven't actually done anything to fix it.

      https://community.arlo.com/t5/Arlo-Pro/Video-Pixelation-afte…

I would definitely NOT recommend anything Arlo right now. They were great when they were owned by Netgear, but since going it alone, things have dropped right off.

This seems to be because they have reduced the video bitrate to such a low level that the quality has dropped off the edge completely - allegedly to save server space on the 7 day free subscriptions.

And I thought the video quality was due to owning the old Arlo 1st gen. I swear the video quality used to be better, so they are playing tricks on the server end.

They were great when they were owned by Netgear, but since going it alone, things have dropped right off.

This confirms what I remember reading somewhere but unable to find info on online, that Netgear were distancing themselves from the Arlo brand.
(On Amazon AU the seller is “Arlo Technologies” instead of Netgear)
So to my understanding the Arlo 1st gen, Arlo Pro & Arlo Pro 2 were designed / made by Netgear, and everything after is made by “Arlo Technologies”.

It is a real shame Netgear allowed their Arlo products to be affected negatively by this change.
(Lowering video quality to squeeze early adopters off their products onto the newer ones)

Edit: I checked the branding. Only Arlo 1st gen has “Netgear” branding on everything. Maybe that’s the only one made by Netgear.

  • 7 days free cloud storage =)

    • +1

7 days free cloud storage, for up to 5 cameras, forever, as far as I know.

  • I have these. Easy to setup and so on, but the charge doesn't last long, especially if you trigger recording on movement or audio.

Also worth noting that the ability to do smart zones is not possible without A/C power.

Solar panel chargers also do not count as A/C power so still won't get the extra features.

    • Is it possible to have the cameras permanently connected to power or can you only charge and use them wirelessly?

      • you can permanently connect to power..if you do that you can setup zoning which you can set to trigger recording for certain sections of the camera view which can be useful when you don't want to record when tree branches are moving or cars on the road when they are moving top of screen etc

  • I have arlo 2 and 1 Security systems and They are Truely a POS.
    |Always going out, Always have to pull down and power off and reboot (some are 3 metres in the air)
2 out of 4 Batteries failed in 1 year, warranty only replaces 1 at a time. Total Freezes.
Batteries last days instead of their claimed months (Have to have plugged in all the time. Add the cable price or solar cost to each camera)
App always has trouble getting live feed so have to wait to see recordings of what has just happened.
    List goes on and on.

However as I am already invested, I need more cameras (As 2 have failed JUST out of warranty) so links to cheap cameras appreciated.
Anyone else I would stay away. Hoping their version 3 would be a different level but I doubt it. I have had MORE down time than they have been up

    • I had similar issues with connection but I found that when you move the hub closer to cameras it fixes it

What has happening was I had like 1 or 2 second videos and then it cuts off. sometimes just half screen blurry videos.

Also doesn't help with the internet is not stable or router needs rebooting every now and then

So I ended up getting a wifi extender and plugging an ethernet cable to the hub and it worked good since. but cameras are only within 5 metres with in the hub.

But you may have a different issue… just sharing my experience
