Looks okay. Can't expect more for such a price.

  • +1

Just paid one from JB Hifi $299.

  • +1

I have one. I paid $299 at JB Hi-Fi. At this price, you will not find anything remotely close in terms of quality and features!

    • +1

most JB phones can be haggled down by another $45

    • +1

@ vrsac: Are you sure? I think previous TCL Plex 6GB/128GB deal at $249 has you well and truly covered.

  • +7

I got Realme 6 this evening for $376 from this deal if you looking for an alternative for slightly more.

The 30W VOOC Flash Charge and 90Hz clinched the deal.

    • +9

Damn, I am an iPhone user but these Android deals are really amazing bang for your buck, I am really tempted!
Now if only my iPhone 7 had a problem that could justify buying a new phone…

      • +8

I switched my old iPhone off and went to a Dual SIM Xiaomi Mi 9 last year. Haven't looked back.

      • +4

It can have a problem if you really want it to :P

      • +2

I am only upgrading from a Samsung S7 due to the damn 7-eleven app requiring Android 9 or above and current phone can't. Otherwise I'd happily not upgrade and stick to my 3+ year phone.

If I was you, I would be sticking to your current iphone as well and only upgrade later if you absolutely had to

        • +2

I'm on s7 and my 8 eleven app works fine on it

@CodeXD: That's a great suggestion, I don't have Snapdragon so could have flashed the rom. Glad it works for you as even in 2020 it's a great phone.

I have really bad screen burn on the screen from using waze and the battery has seen better days (I can only charge to 87%) so probably getting towards the end of its lifecycle anyway and getting sick of replacing broken microusb cables been wanting to transition to usb-c for a while now.

Hope others benefit from your comment as it is a great work around without outlaying money just to continue using 7-eleven app. Cheers

        • or ROM the S7 (or is it snapdragon version and you can't?)
          I run 711 on a 2013 vintage Note 3 with Android 9.

          • @battler:

            I run 711 on a 2013 vintage Note 3 with Android 9.

What ROM are you using on the Note 3?

              • @battler: Cheers mate, any reason why you haven't installed 17.1? I might resurrect my Note 3 as it has been stuck on the Phronesis N7 port. It's so friggen laggy and overheats a lot, ever after factory reset -_-

                • +1

@CVonC: 16.0 is rock solid, haven't seen the need. Also tried phronesis and magma-mx, but phone would heat and reboot all the time.
Lineage 16 and a new battery and I can't see any reason to get rid of it (better camera would be nice though).

                  • @battler: Would you know if there any gcam ports? Or unsupported at all? I've never used a non-stock rom on the Note 3. You lose the spen features eh?

                    • +1

@CVonC: No gcam afaik, something to do with 32bit I think. Factory spen features lost, but Squid app allows notes to be taken and pen can still be used for general things like photo mark-up or in place of a touch - that's good enough for me. A stable modern rom is more important to me than having all samsung spen features

        • -3

I run the 7/11 app on my galaxy s5 on android 6. What is this guy on about?

          • +1

@Tythefly86: Have you updated the app, or tried to run it today? Not working on my S7

          • +2

@Tythefly86: I would perhaps suggest you try to run the new 7/11 app on your S5. Min requirement is Android 9 as of 2 days ago when they updated it. Can't use app without being prompted to upgrade.

      • Just update the software, should do the trick.

        • +1

Can't update software without flashing the rom as per CodeXD (and ensuring yours doesn't run snapdragon).

S7 can't be updated to Android 9 otherwise "officially"

      • -1

I've had my share of $300-400 Androids. They were absolutely perfect for my situation at the time (student on a budget needing a capable phone).

However, they are really not designed to last more than 18 months, in terms of either software support or hardware. If you can afford it, it's 100% worth it to drop an extra $500 on a flagship phone.

        • I'd disagree there.

I've had Xiaomi phones well over 18 months that have been fine…..until I smashed the screen.

          • @knk: I've only had 2 Xiaomi phones. The first one was a Redmi Note 3. It's been almost 4 years now.

I only recently moved on to a Mi A2 because I couldn't play Pokemon Go on the flashed rom on my Redmi Note 3. I use the Redmi Note 3 is still going strong though. Not sure what I'll do with it.

        • +3

Don't agree. Many people ditch flagships after a similar amount of time for all kinds of reasons. Getting out of date, wear and tear, scratches, cracked screens, etc, etc, etc.

In particular people who buy flagships consider having the newest devices to be important so most won't be hanging onto them beyond 2 years.

I've also had no problems owning mid range androids for around 2 years or more. Only changed my last Xiaomi because it started heating up and acting weird (battery draining really fast). Then after I changed it I found out the reason was a dodgy app update that when I removed it fixed the problem!

        • +3

Flagship phones don't cost $800 anymore… Unless you mean last year's flagship?

    • -1

      but no NFC

      • +7

It does have NFC as it is the Australian variant. They made an error in listing

    • +1

Damn that's a very reasonable price for such a well specced phone.

    • how did you get Realme 6 for #376 any ebay code for this?

    • how did you get Realme 6 for $376 any ebay code for this?

    • +1

MT Processor tho', so no ROMs or GCam APKs if that's your thing.

  • +5

Good price for a great phone!

For people picking this up, there's a Gcam port which improves the camera quite a bit so it's worth checking that out

  • +1

The camera on my Mi Mix 2 sucks so bad and this would be a single year tax write off, but 4GB RAM…

    decisions, decisions.

      • +1

Yeah, but under $300 means a tax writeoff this year, over $300 means over 3 years. However I realise I'm dreaming to get a decent phone with a decent camera under $300 before June 30.

        • @freefall101 what do you mean, how do we do this

          • @LionelHutzz: https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/In-detail/Capital-allowances---$300-immediate-deduction-tests/

Don't try claim your personal phone, has to be work related. I have a corporate sim, 100% work related phone calls, probably 90% data usage work related. But it's also the phone I have on me most of the time so I'd like a decent camera in it.

  • -1

    original price $255

  • -2

for that price may as well go for the likes of UmiUmi Jiayu Haylu and Haysus
may outfits are offering a free cosio watch to go with it too

    • Are they AU stock with 2 year warranty too?

      • do we have the statistics of warranty claims that were rejected…it's higher than the ones accepted

        • 82% of statistics that people quote on the internet are made up.

          • @Tiggrrrrr: statistics are like underwear you really got to pry underneath to see the truths
you'd find the truth hidden behind the focaccia

    • What? I can't find links to those

      • That's because the current deal is for a Somesong watch

  • I have Oppo A73, which is not compatible with Telstra SIM card. Will this model work with Telstra network?

    • +1

Yes, it's unlocked. Sounds like your phone was locked to the Optus network.

      • +1

It was, I paid for an unlock code via Ebay, now it can also work with Vodafone network, but not with Telstra

        • +1

I bought an Optus locked Oppo A73 a couple of years back, once unlocked, it is possible to use it on Telstra but the Telstra band is disabled by default.

In the dialer, Enter #800# to open the MTK engineering settings.
Go to Telephony> Bandmode> SIM1 and enable the 850 band mode by checking the box and pressing SET.

When I first got the phone it was possible to temporarily network unlock it using a universal code, I ended up buying a code off ebay that was specific to my IMEI… however from memory I think I still had to go into the MTK engineering settings and reenable the band after every reboot, otherwise I couldn't make/recieve calls via Telstra.

          https://whrl.pl/Rfby87 more info here..

I think Oppo disabled the "free" network unlock code from working with a system update

          • @xMELZAx: I did try a while ago dialling #800#, only to get 'Connection problem or invalid MMI code' message :(

          • +1

@xMELZAx: Doesn't work properly after system update.
But there is an MTK Eng app that does it for you now (re-enables Telstra bands that is).

  • would this be considered an upgrade over a galaxy note 5?

    • well you can run the 7-eleven app on it, unlike the Note 5.

  • Can one want to confirm if this optus variant can handle VOLTE and VOWIFI for Telstra? not sure if its worth the risk if it doesn't

  • +12

im using one for a while as a portable reader and video streaming, here what you should note:

    Pro:
    - battery lasts like forever!!! even for heavy user you can easily last a full day + fast charging, NO wireless charging though but not necessarily need it here.
    - screen is clear and massive, no ugly and weird notch like my iPhone 11 Pro Max. fullHD+ at this price tag is a plus too.
    - dual speakers, loud and acceptable quality.
    - screen protector (film) was installed out of factory + clear case comes with box, no extra expense for protection.
    - ColorOS 7.1 is pretty much close to stock Android 10, only a few Oppo apps on it.
    - Great off and on screen gestures.
    - Oppo Relax app comes with it to provide meditation benefits.
    - NFC available for Google Pay and other things.
    - Can adjust display and font settings for your eye comfort.
    - Fingerprint works like a champ on power button.

    Con:
    - Smart Power Saving mode on at default setting, better turn it off and Turn High Performance Mode on for better using experience (still lag something but improve a lot in general if do so)
    - Turn all related Animation settings off (activate Developer mode first to access to the options for developer) to make it snappier, even keyboard experience is improved after that.
    - Cameras still suck in general, macro camera can produce stunning daylight photos though.

        Web the what?!

        • The username of the comment he was commenting on.

          • +1

            @AncientWisdom: Web the rapist

Like the combination of an analyst and therapist

    • Bought mine today, loving it so far!

Have you found a way to remove the high performance notification though? Feels annoying having it there.

  • +2

Pretty good value, but again deals like these remind me just how good value the $249 TCL Plex was (and still is).

    • +1

Yeah that was a pretty nutty deal.

I wish I was looking for a new phone at the time, but this one still looks pretty good.

  • quite decent phone for this price

  • Does it have B28?

    • +1

      Yes it does

  • How's Oppo with Software updates? Do you get regular monthly security updates? What about major OS releases: are they timely?

    • Unlikely to get a major software update, but you usually get security updates. At least that was my experience with low end Oppo phones.

      • The A9 seems to be getting Android 10 (upgraded from 9), wouldn't be surprised if the A52 at least gets 11.

  • +1

    Legend. Picked one up. Cheers

  • Wish there was the option for the 128/8 version. Is that not available in Aus?

64GB is just way too small. Hate using SD cards as they usually end up being lost :(

    • SD cards aren't all that bad. At least you can recover the files off a card over losing the lot on the device itself (looking at you Apple W/O your subscription services)

    • How often do you take them out of the phone? I've never lost a single one and not because I'm careful, they just never leave the phone unless I'm upgrading.

  • code not working anymore =(

    • Coupon expires 27/06.

Unless you don't have eBay plus?

  • Unrelated to this phone but I chose to get a Galaxy A51 over an Oppp as a b'day present simply because I managed to get a great deal price beating through OW. Got it for around $380 and it's better than my Reno Z which I got for around $350.

    • Where did you get the A51 for $380? Is the camera good on them? GF is coming from an iPhone 6s and is considering an A51 (just wants a camera and more space). Battery was a little lean at 4000mah, and the exy processor. Was about to pay $549 at JBHifi :(

Tried to get a Plex, guessing that was a similar spec.

      • +1

Yeah I'm glad Officeworks have price beat rather than just a match like a lot of retailers. A51 is a great phone it's even better than the iPhone 11! Check out this video:

  • +3

For anyone who has the phone and is using the High Performance mode, I found a neat trick.

The mode makes a permanent notification show up which can't be removed (which clogs up lock screen space).

I snoozed the notification, went into Settings > Battery and toggled High Performance Mode off and on.

Did that this morning and the notification hasn't come back yet, hopefully it stays that way and doesn't just randomly pop up, but looks to be a solid solution.

    • +1

      Worked for me too

  • Could someone please confirm whether it's a dual SIM hybrid slot or that it is dual SIM with a dedicated uSD slot?

Half the sites I've looked at say dedicated uSD, the other just mention dual SIM without mentioning the uSD at all.

    Thanks.

    • +2

It's dual sim and has a designated SD slot.

      • Thanks, looks like I've found a G5+ upgrade.

  • Got from JB for $251 today, used a gift card which i was able to buy for $225. Score!

    • how

      • +2

I asked the sales guy if he could go a bit lower than 299, he said 279 and then got the further 10% off ("first responders" discount)
